On May 11th, 2000, Cedar Point held a media day for the grand opening of Millennium Force. Local news stations and coaster enthusiasts were invited before the 2000 season began. This video also includes some off-season testing/training on other rides, including the new for 1999 Camp Snoopy.
At the time, Millennium Force was the tallest and fastest continuous circuit roller coaster in the world at 310 ft high and speeds up to 92 mph. It was built by Intamin and is still regarded as one of the top steel coasters in the world.

Thanks for posting, David! The music in the loading zone really brought back memories. I either rode it for the first time in 2000 or 2001 and can remember being surprised at how fast it pulled you up the first hill. It's my favorite coaster at the park. Haven't been in years so I still need to ride Steel Vengeance.

@adamdragster the original lift motor reached the end of it's life in 2018. They replaced it with the slower backup motor. No word on if or when they'll replace it with one of the original speed

I have a picture of this ride in my yearbook for 2000. It shows the drop and the first overbank turn. When I first saw a video, read about it, and pictures of it my jaw dropped! 🤯 I hope to someday go to Cedar Point and ride Millennium! 😁

Thanks for this footage, this is awesome! It appears they didn't have the autospiel in place in the station from the 2000-2001 season, really looking for that... but thanks for the station visuals - I'd LOVE to have one of those Millennium Force projector things in the station, they sadly don't have em anymore..

Millennium Force became a classic the day it opened! Steel Vengeance is my all time favorite, but Millennium Force is a VERY close second. Last time I rode it the person next to me was pretty scared at first, as it was her first time riding it. As we were climbing the lift hill, I told her as soon as we start going down the first drop that the train would not lose its speed until hitting the brake run!

Fun story: My mom and dad and there friend went on one of the opening days in may 2000 my dad and his friend were both smoking in the middle of the line I’m guessing they were at least 45 minutes into waiting and they got caught smoking and got kicked out of the line and go through all over again.

That's never really been acknowledged as such because the coaster car itself wasn't as high as the actual ride height and it wasn't a full-circuit ride. Either way, Top Thrill Dragster would take all the records 3 years after this and then Kingda Ka take them after that before Formula Rossa took the speed record.
