Millie Bobby Brown ("Stranger Things") and Evan Rachel Wood ("Westworld") talked on Variety's "Actors on Actors" about their worst auditions, how to deal with online vitriol, and their hit sci-fi show bit.ly/VarietyS...
Yeah, while at the same time she knew Millie was very young she wanted to reach out to her like a peer, as an actor. It was heartening. They're both very talented.
Natural conversation between a 13 year old actress and a 29 year old actress. This truly goes to show you the raw natural talent these two each possess, that's not simple chemistry to have for a one on one interview for actors.
The conversation was completely lopsided. Millie sounded so childish next to Evan. Which is okay... because she's a child. But pretending that it was a level conversation from peer to peer, with the same amount of depth and wisdom... forget it! Evan is miles ahead from Millie.
Agreed. From her performances in 13teen and King of California to Across the universe she has proven to be an extremely talented actress but somehow she's not getting her accolades. It happens to a lot of great actresses that choose more of an indie movie route with their careers, like Chloe Sevigny or Kirsten Dunst.
So good! I love that the age gap doesn't even matter; Evan treats Millie respectfully and warmly, as a peer, and Millie is mature and humble, and they just have a natural, thoughtful conversation.
I agree that Evan was respectful and treated Millie as a peer... but the girl wasn't mature at all (which she needn't be, because she's a child... but let's not pretend she was). Many of Evan's comments flew past her head.
There are a lot of comments saying that ERW should have been paired with someone older. But you can tell that there are a lot of parallels between ERW's early career & MBB's career now. This was a very insightful interview 👌🏾
I truly think Evan Rachel Wood and Kristen Stewart would be phenomenal together if they collaborated in… anything! Both such strong female visionaries with a disarmingly powerful stare that makes me want to hold on for dear life and reach to the very depths of my personhood. So thankful for them and their passion.
i love Evan Rachel Wood's performance in Westworld, such a character with depth and philosophical transformation which blew me away during the last episodes. i wish she would be talking to someone whom could relate to something more than being having a newbie experiences. btw i really like millie in stranger things as well.
I was just thinking that. As much as I loved this pairing, I wanted someone that could pick apart Evan Rachel Wood's brain a little bit. Nothing against Millie, but I just wanted someone talking to her that had the tenacity to grasp the broader scope of Wood's work, especially from her character in Westworld. I think Anna Torv and Evan Rachel Wood would have been a great pair.
ERW: I also love that we both have short hair and three names. MBB: I know, right? *giggles* I CANNOT. Please put them together on a project. I'll die.
I like that they addressed how Millie likely hasn’t seen much (if any) of Evan’s work because of her age. It made me laugh how they spoke of being intimidated by seasoned actors when I’m unsure if Millie knows she maybe should be intimidated by Evan! I hope in years to come Millie will experience Evan’s work and cherish this interview & how gracious Evan was with her :)
Totally agree. Evan was incredibly respectful and PATIENT, particularly because some of her comments and advice flew completely over Millie's head. There were many things the girl didn't understand.
I loved the way Evan treated Millie on this interview. They talked like colleagues about their experiences, as plain as that. No parent-child role. Super talented brilliant personalities, both of them! Best of luck for their careers, they love what they do and are on the right track!
ERW is an amazing actress that doesn't ever seem to mail it in. Maybe because she is more picky with her film and TV choices. She should win a best actress on the Emmys for Westworld but we know how biased they still are towards sci-fi. (ie..Fringe) when it comes to any of the major awards.
Despite the fan base Fringe is not that great. The acting is barely a step above day time soap, serious scenes but acted in the campiest ways possible. WW season 1 (and 3 so far....2 was meh) is acted in a way that's far more adult.
"We don't give teenagers enough credit" This is why it bothers me so much that they cast people over 20 to play teenage roles. There's so many undiscovered wonderful talent in the age appropriate group. I don't get it.
Juce maybe because most teenagers are not emotionally prepared for this level of public exposure - they may be age appropriate for the role but not for the fame. It is not a problem with acting but with public reacting
"This is why it bothers me so much that they cast people over 20 to play teenage roles." part of that may relate to child employment laws....really slows down (and increases cost of) shooting if can only legally work X amount of hours a day.
I mean honestly Evan is such a queen! she is so strong! and i love how she's not talking to Millie as if she knows so much better, she's talking to her as if she's the same age as Evan. i love that. i am sure someone else would possibly talk down to Millie.
Evan needs to make a big come back with Emmy, SAG and Oscar awards, she's such an amazing actress, literally every character she does she brings it so much, love Evan
Brilliant pair of powerhouse actresses. These two have reminded me so much of each other in the way they bring such powerful performances & blow even adults they work with out of the water. To me they are the representative actors of their generations. It's wonderful to hear how they are so passionate about acting & how they both stay in the moment.
I feel like at any point in life, you can still relate to both Millie and Evan in this coversation. We're all still constantly growing and learning. Millie has a "younger perspective" yes, but both her an Evan still have so much to learn in this life. As does anyone reading my words right now. 💓 I enjoyed this pairing completely and I'm excited to see each individual paired with other minds in the future. 🌝
Millie is cute and she's fantastic as Eleven. But has anyone seen her do the same as Evan when she was a child? Evan put a film on her tinny shoulders at 10 years old (Digging to China). I have not seen Millie do anything like Evan yet. Evan as Jessie in Once and Again, or in Thirteen. I want, in the future, to see Millie make at least half of the complicated and daring characters that Evan has done before the age of 20, choose the same kind of movies and not just blockbusters, to be able to truly judge her as an actress. For the moment, it's just a good project. It's great that she can get advice from Evan, one of the few child actors who made the transition successfully and continues to demonstrate how talented she is. I hope Millie follows the same path.
Millie is a clever girl, but she underestimates how much the negativity on the internet can weigh you down over time. There are enough and more challenges in life that will make you stronger. You don't have to invite in all of that toxic stuff online. It's like bathing in toxic waste because you think it will make your immune system stronger.
Kids will always do what they want, especially if they're told not to do it. Then years later they will go on and on about how this and that damaged them.
"Like, such a strong...." 'Yeah, like such a strong...." Most of this is just so beyond words. But, brilliant in its implementation. These videos have such great pairings. Thank you, Variety.
Hm i'm a phd student and randomly all they said about reading scripts is how i feel reading journal papers. love the way they describe passion. that was a good pickmeup to remind me why i'm doing what i'm doing.
Child acting is always an unhealthy thing, and only some can overcome it and live normal lives. We already live pretty unnatural lives, but to be a professional entertainer as a child is taking unnatural to another level. You can two ends of the spectrum - people worshipping you and stroking your ego, and people ripping you down. But Hollywood needs kids, so it packages it in a nice bow to make it look cute and fun.
This is probably the best pairing that you guys have ever done. Evan's first film was at like 10 with Kevin Bacon. So for a former child actress who is still having success to sit and talk with a current one was a really good move. Oh, and the fact that they are both the current stars of really popular sci-fi shows is a plus as well.
I am so amazed by Millie Bobby Brown. She is the same age as my daughter and yet so far ahead of her in maturity. It's inspiring that she has found what she loves to do as a career so young but at the same time it makes me feel bad for her. Is she missing out on getting to just be a kid?
you are the 2% of people who don't like it, 98% of people who have watched it liked it. why do you think it got season 2 and they got a SAG award? Because people like it
I was thinking the exact same thing, I love her shaved head look a LOT, but honestly I think she'd look good with any hair length. If they put her in a wig for s2 I'm gonna be pissed 😂
When she said, "Ya know, you're welcome." I just died because it's such an American thing to say 😅😂🤣 such a sweet interview. My favorite actress (Evan) talking to a new, young actress!! I just picture her being such good support if Bobby ever needs it. Also, I love that they BOTH have names that are general for men. Love it love it love it, love them, so sweet!
This is like watching two kids in a classic exchange of "You like this random things?? I like that random thing!! Let's be BEST FRIENDS!!!" (but with the maturity of adults, obv), lol. 🤣
maya how is she lame? Daughter of the commissioner and has photographic memory and eventually transitions to oracle and eventually leads the birds of prey she’s a legend....... wake up people
omg I need her and robin wright in a movie together there is gotta be a mother daughter awesome movie they can do, I just realize how much they looked like probably the hair cut
A few questions for you @Hairl TabbJr94: 1) Does that NOT make her a goddess? 2) Saying she's a goddess means that "golden chorizo" wants to fuck her, or even see her naked? SPOILER ALERT: The answer to both questions is NO, so... Get the hell outta here :)
🌿 You’re an awesome woman. The acceptance speech you gave at the Glaad awards was so full of everything a person needs to be happy and successful in life, brilliant. I hope you continue to apply your intelligent, strong self, people should know who you are and what you have to offer. I watched “Into The Forest” last evening and discovered , a real woman who, without hesitation speaks her truth. Brilliant just Brilliant. ✨
They were so cute while they thought about their own shows plus the anxiety . I really do love to see them interact about their thoughts and their experiences and individual characters and Eleven is my favorite character so she is everything and underated
Soooooooo, can we have another one with Evan Rachel Wood but paired with Elizabeth Olsen or Anya Taylor-Joy?! Please please please I need it in my life!
she’s like a less anxious Kristen Stewart! except if you watch recent interviews with Kristen she seems a lot more secure and laid back than she used to.
Westworld was the shit! it was amazing and confusing and made me feel all kinds a ways!! i never felt like that since watching Lost, and Lost is the mvp of tv shows, incredibly detailed and thought through.
