"Free" is a relative term. They're only free if you don't count hours of cleanup and damaged blades.

We have some utility poles around the farm. We have thought about sawing them but every time we look at them we think about the creosote and the nails and just walk away. Great job on sawing them they do make a nice post or lumber

I wish someone had yelled "RUN AWAY" before I got these poles; but they didn't.

Good job there Mr.Dave It’s funny you posted this video and I just turned down a job milling up 65 poles for a gentleman. You get great lumber out of them. The gentleman never cleaned them and wasn’t willing to pay me to clean them or pay for blades. I’d like to find some that was out in the wooded area instead in residential. That’s for sharing. Take care

@@TheOldManAndTheSaw I have split some in half working up a log cabin-style shade structure. zipped down the long end of the pole with a circular saw and then the same on the other side. A few log splitters and we turned one pole into two. It wasn't super clean, but it got the job done. And yes, they are a pain to work with.

How do you go about getting utility poles
@TheOldManAndTheSaw

It depends on your utility companies and who you know. My power company refuses to give their old poles away. Instead, they cut them into short pieces and take them to the local landfill because of the chemicals used to keep them from rotting. I got mine as a fluke. There was a crew working on my road and I asked them for the poles; the foreman asked how many did I need (they'd give me all I wanted since they didn't have to make the long trip to the landfill and could quit early). Your power/ phone company may be different. Find out where their pole yards are and ask someone there. Or ask a crew on the road. EXPECT TO FIND LOTS OF METAL!! Good luck Dave

Why not just shave enough off to get a 6x6 even if heavy wane? Still usable in a "pole" barn & every bit cut off just weakens the pole more.

I did end up with a few "waned" 6x6's. They're good enough for me.

Dave I see what looks to be an OLD STONE WALL next to the drive way, it’s crazy to think you are standing in a place that once was a farmers field. The poles where I live have Hundreds of nails and staples left in them from for sale signs yard sale signs political signs, those LOGS do look nice.

That stone wall is over 1000 feet long and ends near another wall that's almost 2000 feet long. Around here you can't dig a hole without hitting a rock.

What about milling down railroad ties

I haven't heard from you before; thanks for the comment. 1. I don't have access to them 2. I'd be afraid of stones embedded in the wood. You can't detect stones except with your saw blade. 3. I don't believe that they use the best quality logs for ties. Dave
