Since things are finally slowing down at the cabin, we seize the opportunity to take on a new project before more snow falls. We cut homemade lumber and install a 12 volt light over the kitchen to brighten up the cabin.

"Screwed to the table", I needed a laugh. Eric, you make it sound so easy, ha. I vote to keep the twinkle lights, (do I get a vote🤔? I've watched every episode, some twice) they are soothing but then again the whole cabin is soothing and warm. Thanks for showing all three fur babies. If the twinkle lights must go, won't change a thing - still the best channel on RU-vid, consistently.

So this is the first time i get to watch a new upload just after it is uploaded and now I will comment as well! So good to catch up with your present time - but I am gonna miss watching 4 or more episodes a day! Y'all have been keeping me company on some dark and tough days in my life so thank you. When I had the cottage we built a sauna/shower building. It was a two part building, not very big, but usable all year round. When we wanted a shower we would fire up the sauna stove. The stove had saddle tanks that would also warm up the water. A small 12 volt RV pump was used to pump water to the shower head. It was so nice to have a dry warm place to sit and dry off after the shower in the middle of the winter. The sauna side was 7x4, big enough for an extra bed for guests.

Few things: 1 I love your dogs, they are hilarious! One moment they have this regal look, looking down on the plebeian, next they look like they are missing a few braincells ;-) 2 What are you doing with your sawdust? will you throw it on your compost or maybe use it to grow your own mushrooms? I mean add some earth, add spores and compress into blocks leave them in a darkish moist place and you're set! 3 It still amazes me every vid I watch, the diversity of food you have and grow in such a cold climate it is truly astonishing. 4 you really must love each other living in such small quarters with hardly and place to escape and a boys or girls night out is , I doubt, not an option. 5 Am impressed and a little jealous but in a good way
@Bramble20322
@Bramble20322 2 года назад
I'm not sure if the pine sap will compost decently, it may screw up the soil composition. Mushrooms are an option, but without sterilizing the sawdust, i dont think you'd get decent results, bad fungus and bacteria usually screw over the good spores.

My wife and I decided to live life our way. At 48 years of age we sold our house, furniture, surplus items and so on. Bought a small motor van and set off into the unknown. We had studied travel etc. for a couple of years and had a sort of plan. Over the next 20 odd years we travelled, firstly our own area, Europe, then across to Canada, America and just into Mexico. Back to Europe, from the North Cape in summer to Southern Spain in the winter and almost all countries in between. We earned our way by taking temporary work as we found it. Bar work, cafes, campsites. Cleaning places, toilets, gardening and so on. Lots of work for casual workers everywhere, no contracts, no holiday pay, no sick pay, dirty jobs no one else wanted mostly. We earned enough each summer to last through the winter. We went our own way and met and made many similar travellers who became good friends. Now at 80 years of age live a simple life in Spain, in a simple wooden cabin, No regrets at all. But looking at the way you two live and how happy you are, if we had our time again May even try your way . It looks so good and you are together and happy . Like us, no him and her, no me and you, just US. Good luck to you, carry on enjoying your life.

My biggest fear of having to survive off grid would be showering or bathing out in the elements. For myself, I'd go the route of installing a tub, even if in a barn, so that I could take a hot bath, where I get warm to my bones. I assume your shower water is probably heated but, there is no way I'd have the courage to face a cold Alaskan day taking a shower outside, period. 🤣

Watching that sawmill is so hypnotic. Was eric joking about screwing into the counter? 😂

if you listen to the drill you can hear when it goes through the wood and then starts going through the metal counter top. I knew he did it before he even said, as I've done it myself a few times :P

I’m anxious to see how it turns out!!! I just know it will be beautiful!!! I was hoping Eric was going to say - let’s make a door coming from the house to the shower!!! Now that would be awesome!!! Someday y’all will have a bathroom with a toilet I just know it!!

That is the coolest light fixture. Watch all of those TV designers steal this awesome thing. And, I bet those lil twinkling lights are awesome with fireplace and a stormy night. The Good Life.

There is something very therapeutic about watching your videos. Whether you are gardening, cooking, building, or at the little cabin, I find myself very drawn to every video - and it puts me at such ease when I’m done watching! Your approach to everything you do is very intentional and calm, even during the hiccups. Seeing you problem solve in a way that’s thoughtful is very inspiring! Thank you.

I also get a little dose of dopamine whenever I see their uploads. Great stuff! Glad it's made your day. I'm curious. Could you give me a few pointers as someone trying to mill a 5 metre long log into lumber. I have 0 experience using a chainsaw.

Love your videos guys long time subscriber but I’m a little concerned about the size wire your using for that light. Pretty sure that’s thermostat control wiring your using and I would def consider that a fire hazard. Stay safe guys and be careful

It would be so cool if you were to make a compilation of the beginning of your homestead through the new shower. It is hard to remember all you have done and would be a nice tribute to all your dreams and hard work. Just a thought. I was sure you were going to screw through the counter and had just said hope it didn't go through when you said you had gone through. Fun. LOL Who made that great BO hook? so cool. Congrats on the new lot-o-light enhancement, too. I really do love the twinkle lights, though.

Okay Ariel with the expert clean lumber lines. I see you girl! You’re working that machine like a pro. Slow and steady makes the cleanest cut, you can’t fuse too much force and rush it either or else you can have a lot of splinters but I have to say I’m really impressed by how quick you got it down. Go Ariel!!

Finally catching up on your last year of simple living after making a cross country move from Colorado to Wisconsin. We've just settled in and have a bit more land for hunting, chickens, gardens, and foraging. My family loves your channel and I look forward to practicing many of the tips and recipes you share here. Also, the footage you capture of Alaska and your homestead is absolutely stunning and I am so mesmerized by even the quiet moments in your videos. Thanks for sharing!

I’m curious how your outhouse system is working out after a couple years. I recall you built a particular system that allowed you to adjust the outhouse to one port or another as the other side decomposed once it was full. How has that system worked out?

I ADORE watching you guys. I like how you guys had a little "scripted moment" of Eric suggesting to build a shower. It was so adorable and you pulled it off to where it wasn't chresy. I look forward to your vids. Quality is great and you always have something useful to share. I particularly like the style you film. Minimal music drowning out the scene and just letting us hear the sounds of the homestead. Some folks just do a timelapse and blast horrible music over it. I prefer how you edit in the important parts and keep it natural. Both of Eric's index finger nails are bruised. Did he whack hinself with a hammer? Lol. Been there before! Particularly with those staple things he's trying to hammer in. Gets me every time.

What with the new lights and shower if you ever had a mind to give your place a name it could be Waldorf Astoria 🙂. And I've wondered how you're liking your composting toilet? PS: I was gathering some rose hips and tried one. By golly if it didn't taste like a tart tomato. Love it. Take care

Dear Alaska Family Friends, I am extremely impressed; First: his great kindness to share his lifestyle with all of us, the RU-vid view; second; valuable tips for organizing and planning chores at home. third: extremely important; cooperation and trust among yourselves to be able to carry out all projects on your properties in Alaska. Certain! there is work and organize the time to carry out all the tasks depending on the seasons of the year. Honestly, I am extremely impressed with the construction of the chicken coop; Your attention to detail to build a beautiful 'Residential Villa (Chat) to the chickens', I have never seen so much effort to build such a well planned structure. Friend, I am happy to learn from all the beautiful jobs, careful to prepare the ground for planting vegetables, vegetables and fruits. THE care with nature; knowing how to select the trees to make the constructions and use of firewood. I thank you for your commitment and dedication to your properties and desire to live in harmony with the Alaskan nature. Kind regards from Tropical area ...
