This guy is obviously highly educated. The problem is that he's pointing out problems with the system. Samuel operates within the system. He doesn't control the system. He has mastered the system but he's not responsible for it. Therefore, really, this guy needs to take his issues to the electorate. If what he says is true and most people would prefer a less capitalist system then its up to most people, ie the electorate, to vote for the system they'd prefer. Until then landlords operate within the system we've got. Survival of the fittest. Nothing more, nothing less.

My god, that was hard to watch, I've been a tenant for years, and never once did I see it as anything other than a business transaction, I paid for a service I was provided, not even the Council give free accommodation you pay them rent 🤦‍♂️ First he says the supermarket argument is invalid as they are producing a good and stealing is then detrimental to the business then says the developer doesn't build the house the builder does, so should profit off the labour. Last I checked, Asda didn't have a mango orchard or a dairy farm out back. They are procuring the services of a farmer, supplier, distributor etc... and then profiting off of that labour with the service they in turn provide. Also, when building a house, who holds the risk ?, the developer, not the builder, the builder provides a service at cost so they do profit, plus if the project falls through and the bank and investors come knocking its not the builder or plumber they come after its the person who instructed the build, you take the risk, you reap the reward.

He didn't mention free rent, he suggested their could be community-led housing development which could be rented at cost. This used to be common practice and does seem to be happening again.

The host has a misunderstanding of basic economics and can't explain why BTL businesses are different from any other business. Any business adds a margin to its good/service. Sainsbury's also buys food cheap and sells it for a profit. Car rental companies buy cars and rent them out for a profit. The issue with the housing market is lack of supply (the host is also ignorant of the fact that we have fewer landlords than in 2016, which coincides with increasing rents). All of the host's suggestions would restrict supply and increase prices. Yes, it's possible for govt to provide housing instead of landlords. Given the way the govt arranges our other public services, I know which system I'd prefer.

Why don’t people see landlords as that being their JOB? Don’t they understand that you have a mortgage to pay and that is your bread and butter. Also you worked hard beforehand to have that home, you wasn’t handed it for free. One word THICK 🙈🤣

Good debate guys. Samuel is mature and clearly very knowledgeable in his trade. Before Margaret Thatcher some rented housing standards were appalling, adding a few more landlords has driven overall standards higher over the years. Anyone taking a risk to create new housing, provide jobs during a build, creating work for property managers after, stimulating our economy, paying taxes back into the system, and then putting in hard work and effort to make life easier for families, single people, people with mental health problems, and the many many people who do not want the responsibility of a mortgage or having to do repairs to their own homes, has my respect.

Oh dear lord, this guy has no idea how the world works adn has always worked...free market etc. His view on risk and landlords is naive if not dillusional. Providing good quality products for a profit is an age old practice, regardless of the product/service - he seems to beleive that everything should be provided for him free...rely on the state - ha ha.

I need to thank you Samuel. I started watching you because i found you interesting and of same faith. I watched all your content and was fed up working 80 hours a week for the monetary return - never scared to work hard. I am excellent in hospitality so every business that was for sale i offered very little upfront money - as i didnt have a lot - but the promise of payment weekly. Everyone said no then i got a reply from a lovely couple wanting to retire but no buyer. I got a cafe making £1k profit a week after costs only open 6 hrs a day 5 days a week. The goods and furnishings would be £30k to replace new. I got it for £2.5k down and £100 a week for 175 weeks with a handshake that if i do really well i will pay it quickly. I was amazed to get it but it just shows deals are out there. As soon as i can i need your course so i can reinvest the money i make. I open boxing day 😀 Good luck my brother and thank you 👍

Im lost for words, the solutions this guy was talking about was either trust the government ( big question mark on trusting any government ) theres a reason labour got kicked out and a reason Conservatives are hated. Second building societies and co-operatives, can flurish under the capitalist society that we have now. And it speaks volumes when you asked him what he would do if he had £5million not buy a load of houses and rent them out cheap or free, he'd start a business, which the number one thing people need is cheap accommodation.

Just Listening to a few minutes of this podcast, all I can say is that I went to his masterclass back on November 22, and I can honestly say to him that this Sammy is 100% genuine! Not only that I had seen so many of his videos before I went to his masterclass and he really wants people from the lower class to wake up and get hold of the opportunity to get rich, before its too late, but the only problem here is also that SL has now become so famous that everyone is now on to him, we're just waiting for Lyolds bank to nab him just for sake of being one of the biggest landlords in the UK

I watched this video, genuinely open minded and open to learning how "lefties" can justify their position. What I learnt was how illogical the interviewer is. WE ALL make money by solving other people's problems. eg If my problem is that I'd like a coffee, a barista solves that problem by making me a coffee, for which they get paid. A tenant needs a roof over their head, a landlord solves that problem by providing a property, for which they get paid.

The landlords I know have just 1 rental property to diversify their pension investments, and are giving back to society much more than investing in some invisible fund. To suggest they have some sort of social obligation to provide free rent is ignorant at best.

I’m really not sure this interviewer has a clue what he’s talking about! Does he really think that landlords don’t have mortgages and expenses to pay on the properties they rent out? If a tenant doesn’t pay his rent and the landlord will lose the property if they the money to pay the mortgage! Then there won’t be any properties to let to tenants! He needs to really get a clue read a book before he calls himself an interviewer! It’s absolutely ridiculous scenario.

You should have brought examples of countries where the regulations chased the landlords from the market. All of sudden there were no properties for rent. Also the standard of living in soacilist/communist countries with no private landlords was very very low. All those socialist should test living in a pure socialist system. They would have woken up quickly!

Landlords don’t just magically acquire properties, they work hard, pay their taxes & sacrifice other things to save enough for the 25% deposit. I don’t think he realises how much work goes in to renovating & maintaining a property to a good standard. Also, if landlords take the mortgage payment & add on a profit as he claims how does he explain the fact that it’s cheaper to rent than to buy nowadays (especially in major cities). He should really educate himself better before taking such a strong stance & spouting his victim card drivel as fact.
@ryanhesmondhalgh391

This guy is just a pure socialist. Obviously we can agree that in many areas of the UK rent is high and their are many people that want buy a house but aren't able to and have to rent. But, it seems that his position is that he disagrees with the idea that a person should be allowed to profit from providing capital and taking on risk, and that a person should only profit from labour (he's clearly ignorant to fact that the management and allocation of recourses is a form of labour). Now, if you subscribe to just the idea that an entity should not profit from the provision of capital, then you disband with whole idea of capitalism. So do we get rid of all banks? all lender? how do people buy houses without a mortgage then? Should the government just own all the houses and everyone should rent? Well, who built the houses? The construction companies and developers would have from government contracts. Should they be able to profit off of that enterprise or should the government just nationalise all developers and contractors? You see, you can pretty much expand his ideology to every industry across the economy. And then what do we have? Communism.

So, I'm 15 minutes in watching this interview, and the interviewer is talking crap 🤣🤣🤣. As a landlord, you bought the property (likely still paying a mortgage) so be a good person an let someone live in your property for free while you go and get a job. 🤦🤦🤦. Really? If people don't like paying rent, and they're single or a couple, get a caravan or a tent and live off grid. Much cheaper that way. And yes, that's exactly how I live

He seems ...slow, Just full of emotion and letting that emotion pick his words. he doesnt understand the system so he has no idea what hes actually saying and how dumb it is. MOST property developers earn their money for labour, equipment etc through the rent money they earn via their other rental properties. If you wasnt a landlord you wouldnt have the money to build and supply those 40 + houses that will house 40+ people who are in desperate need of a home. His idea that you are not providing anything to society is CRAZY. People love to point out that tenants money bought their landlord a Ferrari but they forget that tenants money also provided the landlord to help charities and build houses to help those in need. You can just tell that this is a boy who worked hard but didnt have the intelligence to work SMART so hes now mad at anyone who is capable of making money by being smart and working hard too. he said he works a normal job and you should just work a normal job too, I bet ANY money you help more people than he does and ever will.

I don't understand how he can say a developer shouldn't be entitled to the profit as it was the workers that added value and should get the profit when 2 of his 3 solutions were to use co-ops and building societies? Honestly how Samuel stays so calm when confronted with this dribble!!!! The interviewer is absolutely clueless and obviously knows nothing at all about business! I expect nothing less from a left wing looney to refer to all Landlords as leeches! Firstly we are in business, we risk everything, we give employment and redevelop, often at risk, run down properties and bring them back to use and then have to maintain them, often when tenants abuse them! I know several developers and Landlords that have lost millions and started all over again! After University all my children have rented rooms as a way of starting off, they don't want to buy yet, they are not ready, where would he like them to live, if there are no rental properties?? He's living in absolute cockoo land! Next, Labour destroyed council housing (not Conservative) in the 1970's by making it Means tested. Council housing was built for WORKING families. Once Means tested it just encouraged family breakups and underage pregnancy of which we proudly have the highest in Europe!!!! And lastly my best friend is from Sweden rents and taxes are extremely high there so whats he talking about???? I think Samuel is generous in saying he is intelligent, I beg to differ!!

With the mortgage payments i would not be making much profit anyway and if the tenent did not pay i would be in a difficult situation. He is making it sound as if all the rental income is going straight into the landlords pocket. How stupid is this guy at 14:22 when you said some landlords have mortgage and running costs he says 'so what your taking money off of somebody that goes to work'. What happens if i dont pay mortgage on my own home i lose my home. Im going to work and banks are profiting off my hard work so cant i do same thing with the tenent.

His argument was community housing with capital provided by building societies as worked previously. This was rented at cost, so there no profit. The argument against this is that people are less inclined to remain in their communities these days compared to the 60s so probably wouldn't be as successful. Building Societies will also need to change their business models back to the community-owned models prior to the banks owning them.

Renovating a property puts money into the economy and is landlords labour as he called it, but also Tesco's CEO doesn't hand pick the fruit or farm the meats, they buy that stuff super cheap and add a mark up to put in their pockets. So they take from farmers and labourers for a profit sat in their offices. I can't follow why he thinks this is any different. 🤷

My word Samuel I wish I could help write some answers for you - to teach this guy a few hard facts about economics and sociology. 1 Thatcher did not sell off council housing, she gave renters the right to buy and THEY WANTED to buy their homes and not rent so that they could have a capital asset and some inheritance to pass on to their kids, whereas if they just rented, when they pass on they have nothing to pass on THATS a TRUE VISCIOUS cycle 2. Social utility - what the hell is that, who decides it, we are back to Animal Farm Russian Communism, who decides, the Communist Committe -- this has not worked in any country in the world 3. He says we did not comodity food - WHAT - food is and also HEALTH, yes we have free health care, with 2 yaer waiting lists for hip operations, so should some people die if they have cancer instead of using their own funds to see a a private doctor? 4. This guy thinks you buying a wreck of a house and doing it up and bringing it back to the market, is not raising housing stock - WHAT - its simple maths. 5. Does this guy marketise his youtoube channel, I think his misguided thinking does not help society, what is his soical utility? seeeee my point Samuel, please get in touch if you want some points to use when speaking to these Gen Z liberal communists, who think its ok for tenants not to pay rent, and wish you the landlord to get a job ---- being a landlord is a job buddy.

Who is this journalist? Please provide me a nice house for free Please? Why not you do it? Give me a house, I will not take it with me and I will return it 50 years later pretty much in the same condition as you give me today as you will receive the house same as it is now, I will have not taken anything from your house. Please journalist can you do that please? I want a free house too. Or if current landlord are charging 1k, provide me a house in 200 pounds please bro? That will be great, why not you step out and provide us free or at least really cheap houses?

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, highest taxes in the World - so does this guy want to give way 50% of his income to pay for someone else's houses ---- and they also have private sector and are some of the most expensive countries in the world for cost of living ----- so this guy is a joke; his system is Cuba or Russia or China, and have a look at that place.

The left are so painfully wrong it hurts. I can't actually believe there are people who think they have a right to live in someone else's house for nothing just because the landlords name is on the title deed. "Go and get a job to pay the mortgage like the rest of us"...*rents a house instead of buying one like the rest of us*

Theres an argument of both sides here, yes as an investor you should expect returns, but those returns is reliant on the exploitation of those that cannot afford a mortgage, to either pay the landlord a profit, or float the mortgage for inflation to take effect so that a remortgage can be used to pull equity out. Those BTL mortgages are at a higher rate than residency mortgages so naturally the landlord needs to charge more to pay the mortgage, cover maintenance and pay there (now inflated against total rent) taxes. Really there no winner or loser here, both sides has problems both sides have valid arguments

The journalist could have skipped this entire conversation, he is talking to the wrong person here ... landlords simply shouldn't give a shit, why should they ? They provide housing to those who can't afford to buy ... but if i was in government, as an example, I'd probably largely agree with the journalist because I'm in a position to actually change policy.

Dear god get this man off his soap box 😅 I've never heard such rubbish in all of my life honestly I've been shouting at the telly for nearly an hour watching him dronning on and on 😂 if he had a mirror he could argue with himself 😅 he's got issues he came across aggressive and opinionated 😂 and clearly blames Samuel for everything 😅 he also lives in a fantasy world were his ideas of housing could never exist he's a dreamer with an attitude 😳 I've been on Samuel Leeds courses I've meet amazing people who encourage everyone there to be the best vision's of themselves I'm now on my own property journey to become a good landlord because of him 😅 helping my family and going into the social housing sector. That's what lots of landlords do give back 🙂 Samuel you handled yourself incredibly well ( when you could get a word in😅) you stood your ground and responded in a kind , compassionate and level headed way unlike like this crazy yappy dog who just went around in circles loving the sound of his own boring opinionate voice 😬😅

Samuel, you missed a couple of tricks. You didn't bring up the topic of rising population and how this impacts the market and how the government aren't building enough to keep up with the demand. You could have spoke on how landlords like us fill that void. He would have struggled on those points because he wouldn't have had an answer.

Very good video Sam, the journalist seem to have a big chip on his shoulder, typical shelter hate the private sector landlord mind set. Sam dealt with him very well and did not bite when he was being so opinionated. May be the Government should save the money that they waste in Ukraine and Israel and support our own communities and our homeless people. What about the money was wasted in Rwanda?

This was a brilliant debate. Great job on both sides to have a measured and insightful discussion about this (rare to see nowadays). This was fundamentally an ideological disagreement. Free Market Vs Statism: Which one works better? --- If you are ideologically against privatisation & more specifically the privatisation of housing provision in the UK, you will never accept landlordism as a legitimate business. Portfolio landlords (not all of them are perfect) are running a business that provides a product & service to a willing and able buyer. They also provide a service, generally to a higher quality than the public sector has done in the past (the state of a lot of council housing in the country is truly shocking). Landlords are incentivised to provide a higher standard of living due to the reward of increased profits (the state won't have this incentive) Today's unaffordable housing isn't a symptom of landlordism, it's symptom of a consistently low housing supply, an ageing population, more single households, an archaic planning system & high interest rates. To blame landlords for housing affordability is misguided. Build To Rent Developers, Government endorsed schemes like Shared ownership & Help To Buy have done far more damage to housing affordability than individual landlords have. Reducing landlordism won't solve the issue of unaffordable housing, if anything it could make it worse.

@@silverltc2729 you can have the right to housing and healthcare without impacting someone else's human rights. every human right has a limit though, if you're hurting or harassing other people then the gov (ideally other people) can intervene, freedom of movement is impossible without the rights of healthcare and housing and self-determination. you have the right to privacy but you make certain agreements to limit some aspects of that. i would argue landlords limit some of these rights such as privacy, right to housing and self-determination

@tomgachagan1347 what? You can never have a right to something that is on the palm of another man hand. That is communism. That, is called theft. Do you have the human right to steal? I want to know if you, Tom, know the difference between human rights and luxuries afforded to you by the state?

Who takes on the risk? Not a Tennant. That's what a tenant pays for, the privilege of living in a home with no investment because believe it or not housing doesn't grow out of the ground nothing is free in this world. It's fine to pay for a hotel or airb&b but for some reason landlords are just supposed to pay your way because how dare they ask for money for their service
