Some people are getting upset in the comments, so here are some clarifications: - The point of this project was NOT to inspire homeless people or prove that they can easily make $1,000,000. As explained in the video, it was to show that people in general can make a comeback even if they lose everything. Yes, I know the title is a bold statement and there are always exceptions. - Mike outlined all the rules of the project here: mikeblack.co/rules. He was really careful and deliberate to have no unfair advantages. - The point of “but he had skills already and confidence so it’s unfair” is kind of the point of the whole video. In the end it’s all about skills and confidence, but both can be built and that’s the entire point. All the information you need is free online. Hope this clears things up a little!

@@corriejo3655 That is the point though. You start with yourself to get your life on track and then you can ACTUALLY get your life on track. Of course you won't be able to make a million dollars if you live in a crack house, but that isn't something out of your control. You can make the decision to go homeless and then work hard, which will make it easier after that. But it starts with yourself and nothing but your own willpower.

A few things: 1. Having zero dollars is nowhere near the same as being in debt and dealing with some other factors that can lead to homelessness. 2. Having someone willingly lend you an RV on your first (and thus last) day of being "homeless" is so unrealistic. 3. Randomly getting a job as a well payed marketing consultant short-term would be impossible for someone with no prior experience or education in the field. 4. Having someone cosign on your super expensive house when you have "bad credit" is really insane. 5. Anyone going around with a whole crew around them filming will be treated differently than your average homeless person in the US.

There's a lot of jobs out there, even if you're homeless and stink and look like shit. I'm on telegram groups where people are begging for cash workers to do simple tasks like help move furniture paying $50 for a couple hours of work, do some post-construction cleaning for $20/hour, and similar. Most of these jobs you don't even need to speak the language, evidenced by the fact that my mom (who doesn't speak english) and several of our immigrant friends were able to do these gigs. I’m in Michingan and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.

This is like starting a new character in GTA Online when you're already a 3,000 hours player. That's the only relatable thing I can compare it to. You already know exactly what to do and how to do it. Edit: I think what some people are not understanding in the replies is that experience is more important than knowledge. You can learn about something all you want, but until you experience it for yourself, you will likely run into problems or fail. Knowledge definitely helps a lot, and in the case of this video, this guy had knowledge AND experience. When Cayo Perico came out, I looked at youtube videos and speedruns to fast-track my knowledge, but even as a 2,000 hours player back then I still had to experience it and go through trial and error, failing again and again to get the small technical bits down. It probably didn't take me as long as others to understand it, but I wasn't a master on my first, second, or tenth run. With that said, real life is far more intricate and far more punishing when you fail.

I was homeless for just shy of 8 years. Let me tell you this is by far one of the most unrealistic perspectives of homelessness I've seen. Firstly, let's talk about the elephant in the room. The production team, that quite LITERALLY made it possible for him to go this far. All the benefits they gave him that most homeless people couldn't even dream of. The "Kid" that drove 30 minutes to let him crash at his place? That pissed me off, when you're homeless you get treated like you're invisible, and people don't even give you the time of day to converse with you, and you're going to tell us a random guy drove 30 minutes to pick up a stranger? Nope. Oh but lets not forget that he has a phone, that's charged..With service.. Yeah definitely all homeless people have that, right? You see, this is the problem with this whole video, when you're homeless, you don't have a safety-net. The guy is a millionaire, acting like he's broke and homeless. There's a difference, the psychological effect of knowing you have a backup plan that will get you back to where you started allows for you to make stretches and leaps. When you're actually homeless it takes a large toll on your Mental Health. Most homeless people have been battling with depression, anxiety and/or several other mental health disorders that can come about from living like that. This guy has his head in the clouds if he thinks that is all what homelessness entails. It's soul-crushing and to see a millionaire "prove" anyone can make 1,000,000 is merely arrogant. All the stars aligned and this guy had multiple helping hands and benefits that most homeless people just do not get.

@@joelk3187 I have a phone now and money that took years to achieve - Not because I did not work for them, or I didn't know how. It is extremely difficult to recover from poverty and homelessness, it is mentally exhausting, stressful, and depressing. You fail to realize how unrealistic your perception of homelessness is if you think that starting from nothing, with nothing is easy because he did it quicker? Most people "know what they're doing." With that being said he doesn't have a small advantage, he had enablers. His situation is unrealistic. As I mentioned before in my original post he had so many helping hands. If you think people in reality are that helpful, or even that caring you are sadly mistaken. No one would drive 30 minutes to pick up a homeless-man that they don't know. And the thought of someone co-signing a lease for a homeless-man is straight out insulting.

@@CarmenBuenrostro I don't believe there are many more addictions that are quite as harmful, destructive, and most importantly difficult to escape from as drugs/alcohol. It is also one of the main causes for homelessness. Regarding mental illness however, if the one you posses prevents you from completing work, then this video isn't for you, and additionally, the help and path out of homelessness for you required is quite visibly extremely different. A third party's help is almost always needed. It is ignorant however, to say that Mike was trying to give a solution and guide to all homeless people. That he treated this as a game and that his past experiences were to blame for his success. Its obvious he more intended this as a guide not to those facing such complex issues, but more towards those that have only fallen into homelessness due to a chain of unfortunate events that befell them. He is giving tips like flipping free products on craigslist for some profit. Clearly it is not a solution to millions of Americans' homelessness, however, it is a stepping stone that they can use effectively, just like he did, to recover from the situation. Making about the median US salary in only, 10 months, and what would have been more if he had gone all 12 months, after starting with just a phone and clothes is extremely inspiring and helpful to those who are in a similar position. Not only did he show that you can recover from such hopeless situations, inspiring most likely millions of people that watched this and other videos about him, he proved that hard work is really all you need. Many probably doubted themselves and their abilities. Watching this however, shows you can make serious cash with just hard work. And even if he had only his past experiences to thank for his clear success, he shared the steps he took with everyone else. Now anybody recreate his steps that you say were only achievable through his expertise, and do the same. Is it not ignorant to say that this video documenting his experiences, "...doesn't prove anything."? Even if hadn't shown that anyone can do it. If he had proven that only those with his knowledge, and those that have nothing to lose (which doesn't even make sense as what does a homeless individual have to lose?) could make it out, then is it not still ignorant to say that he doesn't prove anything if he had now given everyone a step-by-step tutorial on just how to replicate his actions? These "normal people" without his expertise and experience can now just follow his steps and escape. Your comment is just full of broken logic, hypocrisy, ignorance, and really just pathetic and pitiful. Why do you hate on, and more precisely, disregard and discredit someone's successes? He succeeds in his challenge. He inspires millions. He creates hope and opportunity. And he Yet this is seemingly not enough for you as it has not solved a deeply intricate issue, that is old. It has only done the listed above and more, yet you still dispute his actions. Extremely disrespectful and ignorant behavior towards his journey and those he impacted so greatly. Perhaps you just envy those that work hard and succeed. Perhaps a young millionaire proving that its not luck that got him to where he is, but work and intelligence, just makes people less successful than him feel insecure and envious. That is where your ignorance truly shines, where as you cannot acknowledge that someone is more intelligent or experienced, you stay believing the world is pitted against you. Instead of perhaps understanding and thinking to yourself, "maybe this rich guy knows a thing or two that I could learn and pick up on," you choose to claim he still had some unrealistic and/or beneficial circumstances that made him succeed once more, instead of just listening and improving. Many lessons and conclusions to be drawn from this man and his experiences. I choose to learn that perseverance and hard work can make anyone succeed. That focus and determination are vital towards the successes of our goals. As well as much more. You choose to conclude that there is some underlying or concealed thing making him succeed. That he is just lucky. That his steps are unrealistic in the real world. That he ignores several issues that can be encountered, never once pondering that perhaps making excuses and discrediting him won't benefit you in anyway. Instead of bringing yourself up to everyone else and above to feel good. To feel smart. To be good. You choose to bring everyone down to and below you to feel better about your issues. To mask your insecurities. To feel better than everyone else. Instead of being like a flower seed that uses the protection given by the Nurse Plant to just peacefully grow, you act like a weed that only grows the tallest by bringing down the plants around it.

When i went to the North of Portugal, in 22 days, i only went 3 times to a restaurant. I even had managed to sleep in some houses. After a good little talk people invited me to join in dinner or lunch. Its not something out of this world. I am used to travel a lot, so if you have confidence and good talking, you can make that too. People just find it hard to do it because they see the world too selfish, and never in their life they will think that some stranger will give stuff for free. Unlike a real homeless person who struggles day to day with with where to sleep, where to eat, trying to keep a decent mental health to not sink into despair, dealing with health issues and knowing you can't afford the medication , even some cheap OTC stuff, petty police harassment due to city ordinances that for all purposes make it a crime to be homeless... I could go on and on and on. If he really wanted a challenge he should've had someone else chose a random day and drop him off at a random location with no resources. Maybe $100, a sleeping bag and a prepaid phone and figure it out from there. At the end of this challenge he knew he was going back to his comfy lifestyle so he has no idea what it's really like.

There was a lady who lived under the bridge near my home who had lost her job as a cook when the restaurant closed down. I asked what she needed. She said no phone= can't call/message about jobs, but we found a library nearby so that helped. When she was ready for her interview, she asked to use my shower. These very simple things were so hard for her. Idk how she managed to live under that bridge until her salary came, but in about a month, she was gone. This video is a good example of why the like to dislike ratio should be public because I'm almost positive it has far more dislikes than likes I don't think you guys realize how tough it is when someone goes homeless. They don't just choose to go homeless, they likely have massive debt and have no one to support them. Rep. Cori Bush, who I think this dude is probably not a fan of, was actually homeless and she knows how tough it actually is to get a home after being homeless it's why she campaigned hard and had overnight sit in to extend the eviction moratorium. This guy is getting all the help in the world and he gets to sleep in the production studio on certain nights. This isn't a bouncing back video either. This dude voluntarily went homeless. People who go homeless have exhausted all options and ideas.

*I've been homeless for 2 years and I'm sorry, I really like this guy, but this is far from a true representation of what being homeless is.* First of all, he consciously decided to put himself in that position in order to set a challenge for himself. I've been homeless from my 18s to my 20s and I can tell you that the toughest part of it it's the feeling of not having the slightest control on your own life. This comes with some serious psychological drawbacks and even now (6 years later) I still feel the weight of that experience. I still feel dirty and casted out of society. This man put himself in that position and he carried with him his optimism and his knowledge of the fact that in 1 year he could still be a millionaire no matter what. And then you have to take into account the fact that before being homeless a lot of people had years of struggles that led into that situation, which makes you tired and hopeless. Many have some sort of addiction, others have psychological struggles. And last but not least, he came into the "homeless experience" with his mindset and knowledge, knowing full well that he's capable of those kind of achievements.
@williampan29
@williampan29 2 года назад
and that lack of control leads to hatred, bitterness, apathy and inflammation. you feel pain both outside and inside. as if you are in a burning hell despite standing on a cold street. Seeing internet comments or commerials telling you: "just work harder ;)" makes you want to gut them out of spite. I still have issues trusting people these days.
@magnumopus1628
@magnumopus1628 2 года назад
@@williampan29 Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. I also felt a little bit frustrated while watching this video, because it's the exact representation of the narrative of "if you want you can". Which of course has *some* truth to it, but if you want to make a dogma out of it becomes delusional and disrespectful. And a lot of people that think this way end up blaming the homeless people for not finding a way out of it with a "Oh he's just lazy" and people in 3rd world countries with "they are savages" not knowing that if they are not dying of starvation it's because they had the luck to be born in a modernized country, but they would still say that it's not luck, they deserved to be born here and the others deserved to be born there. Regarding trust issues I totally understand what you mean, I'm still not over it, but I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that the thing that helped me is *becoming myself the person I would trust.* (I know, it sounds a little bit cheesy). For example there is an old homeless man that sometimes waits for the bus he would then sleep in at the bus stop just outside the condo I now live in, and when I see him I grab a bag and put some food (bananas, oranges, crackers, chocolate, biscuits...) and some other useful stuff (masks, hand sanitizer, new socks, a compact umbrella...) and since he both drinks and smokes I go down with a nice beer and a couple of cigarettes (he usually picks up the unfinished cigarettes from the sidewalk) and have a chat with him while we drink a beer. I stopped smoking cigarettes years ago and I never drink alone, but I do both when I'm with him because I know that human contact is even more precious than food in that situation. I don't know if this could also be useful for you, but it helped me to restore a little bit of faith in humanity. After all, I'm part of the same humanity I lost my faith in. It's a strange concept, I know, but it worked for me. Another example of this is that one year into being homeless (I found out that my mother had terminal cancer) I started using drugs (mdma, ketamine and cocaine) to ease the pain and feel a little bit of joy, when I realized that I was becoming addicted to them I decided to stop using them all, and I managed to do that, helping myself by helping a friend of mine that started smoking heroin. (her ex boyfriend got her into that, that piece of sh!t). She is now clean, she has a boyfriend she lives with and a job. Helping her helped *me* a lot. I didn't even went through the usual struggle of withdrawal from using this substances.
@magnumopus1628
@magnumopus1628 2 года назад
@@williampan29 But yeah, it still have some trust issues and sometimes anger issues. That will take time to fully elaborate it, and it would probably still be a part of me for many years to come. I think the key here is to process and accept every aspect of this experience, even your own anger in order to end up being more or less capable of managing it in the future. This at least is my experience, I know that yours might be very different. I really hope you'll find your way to rise above it.

Few Questionable Things about this Video: 1.) How did he find someone out of the blue in less than 3 months to cosign a home for him? 2.) He had access to a cell phone, and living in the digital age makes it easier to make funds quicker. Without it, things should've been more complicated. 3.) How did he get a job without a physical address? 4.) With less than 7 grand within 2 months how did he afford rent out of the gate, and down payment for his new home? There's no way he found people to rent out to right away. So many details left out, and isn't adding up imo.

This is true and at the same time the message still stands. You can improve your situation by pushing forward. Sometimes people need help getting there but it's still possible. Not saying everyone can become a millionaire within a year, that's unrealistic. But you can improve your daily situation and that's what matters. It's easier for him due to his background and mental state but that doesn't mean someone can't go from being homeless to renting a room or couch surfing, moving to an apartment eventually, etc. It won't be easy and it will take a lot but you can move forward. I know a few people who have been homeless before due to drug problems they had in the past but they eventually improved their lot in life.

@@krishanmani1796 You personally don't need to experience the exact circumstances someone has to understand their situation, it's called having empathy. As an extension of that people also learn by observing others or from mentors, so your point isn't really a point as it is moreso just you shrugging off accountability. Most people are going to have a hard time in their life and the reality is you won't always have someone there to save you. Even if the situation you're in isn't your fault, you are still the one who has to overcome that situation. It won't always be easy, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. You can do nothing to improve your situation or you can try to better yourself. You may not get the results you want but the alternative is doing nothing and forever staying in the same circumstances. Don't quit before you've even begun.

@@FladdoT i mean yea, but how?? the average homeless person won't have internet and won't have enough people to talk to in order to find that person sum that up with the fact that looks matter a lot and people is more willing to help you with things like that if you don't look dirty or smell bad, something which is hard to keep up living on the street you gotta sell yourself to people and look presentable for them to accept if it was as easy as "just talk to a lot of people" there will be more stories like that so let's face the fact that he didn't get lucky, he already had the connection and a way to get someone to help him stay in a house

Why not? There’s help everywhere, there’s free housing and plenty of free resources to help you get out of it and you don’t even need a person, sometimes you just need to find opportunity. The reason why most people are homeless is because they are too mentally unstable and unfit to be functioning members of society with huge drug problems. The help is there, they just don’t want to help themselves. It’s their problem
