Hi graham, a fellow flight attendant here. We are required to wear stockings with our uniform. We always have to carry a lot of extras with us because if we have a tear we’re required to change it right away (annoying, I know) we also do have to wear a shoe with at least a 1 inch heel that’s presentable to walk through the airport. Most all flight attendants have heels for the airport and shoes for on the plane. Since we are the main employees representing our companies they train us to always be tip top🤷🏽♀️ it’s a lifestyle
Both my parents are flights attendants and are both furloughed. My mum is at risk of being made redundant. British airways are screwing their flight attendants over and using it as an excuse to get ride of crew on the older, more expensive contract.
Hi graham, Thank you for reviewing this video. It’s me and my best friend in the video. On this day I was sick but I still managed to do it. You are soo funny and yes the car was a bit much. Thanks for your honest opinion. Happy quarantine 🙏🏿
Graham is super cheap, but I understand it. The part that I don't understand is why, to his extent. You're working to pass money on after you die? Enjoy your life more =)
1. Stockings are mandatory! And most flight attendants will invest in good compression stockings to help with blood circulation (being in the air does take a toll on everything). 2. High heels must be worn with your uniform. You can get reported for being seen walking around the airport with flats or other shoes...which will result in a write up. Tragic, I know.
@@blizzardl as a woman heels are used for special events in which they are required are to look more professional. I typically try to only get comfortable ones but it can be really difficult. Also flats are better for planes and can still be considered dressy and professional.
@@sweetprincess213 yea but wearing them everyday for extended periods of time literally causes foot deformation over the years. That's why it became illegal to force them as dress code in most other jobs, because of all the woman who became cripple from it by the time they went through their career.
This video proves there is the high cost for women to "look good" in the workplace. $58 of her monthly budget goes towards a mandatory dress requirement that her male colleague doesn't have to have.
I am a Flight Attendant, and I generally agree. Yes, men have to wear suits and stuff, but they don't have to wear makeup. We are required to wear makeup. We are required to wear stockings with our dresses (men don't wear dresses, obviously, so they can wear cheaper socks). I'm lucky, because my airline subsidizes the cost of stockings for women, but there's still the question of makeup, lotion, watches! Nails, hair, it all adds up.
This is definitely why I love watching Graham. He's really challenged the way I talk myself out of spending money. I've paid off $30k of debt in the past 8 months. His channel has played a huge role in all that.
The woman side of H&M is way more expensive than the men’s side, a sweater on the woman side can cost 40 dollars vs 20 in the men section. Being a woman in general is more expensive if you calculate makeup, hair, nails. And sure you don’t have to do that but a lot of it make you seems more professional and presentable. Especially if your a woman of color.
That's interesting. It is the opposite here in India. You can find women's clothing on the cheap from these fast fashion brands like Zara and H&M, whereas the men's clothing is very expensive in comparison.
Gabriel galvez it’s not that simple unfortunely. I have actually shopped on the men’s side before but men cuts aren’t made for woman’s body’s. It doesn’t account for boobs or bigger butts. And that goes back to the looks presentable and professional thing you need stuff that is tailored for a woman’s body shape.
@coco marineblu she probably talking about hair. Alot of company dont consider certain hairstyles appropriate. So you would need to go to a stylist to get it done regularly, each time buying all products for installation (e.g extension) and upkeep (wraps, gel, hair care etc). For this industry, you would probably need to go every month to get it reinstalled, neater or redone. You also need to invest in alot of product to keep it neat and have it looking fresh. Hairstyles dont really last long and start to look unkept very quickly, for the standard of this industry.
It sounds like a lot of these high expense things have to do with their job. Most airlines require their flight attendants to look "put together" which often means makeup. I know some have it in their rulebooks things against acne and other blemishes. My guess is the facials and treatments are for that. Stockings are part of the uniform as well. There are some really interesting videos out there about flight attendant requirements. Especially in Korea, flight attendant requirements are really high. There's even special university programs in Korea for flight attendants. It's wild when compared to the common American idea of flight attendants.
@Eden Wild no disrespect intended. I actually really respect the airline stewards as yall have way more training than most people realize. I know theres also variance between the airlines. Good to know there are some out there that dont have super restrictive requirements :)
My friends are flight attendants and they get scolded when their hair and make up look “cheap”. They want you to look like the apple pie American girl, but if you use wet and wild lip stain that flakes off or foundation that too orange not taken down the neck.... you can get written up for it from those ass hat customers who think their attendants looked “trashy”. I’m talking my friend made the mistake of only having red lipstick and her dark shadows for touch up in her purse when she was running late for work. She didn’t have foundation and applied what she had to look presentable. Her hair was clean uniform neat but her make up made her look less desirable and she got written up for it. Another friend was commented as being too fat to fit down the aisle because her hip brush past his shoulder for sticking out. Those comment cards are real, and women are held to crazy beauty standards. Heels as a uniform while flying and walking for 12-14 hours a day? That’s so brutal. I would do this for a living but the $$ to spend on maintaining the youth of your skin while in such high altitudes is a downward battle... :( that level of dry with stress is asking a lot
boot2themoon my apathetic apologies when I say heel I didn’t expect you to equate that to stilettos, so I will correctly state Block kitten heels. But yes, heels none the less... they’re dress code for many airlines
@Targaryen Dynasty If you want to be ignorant and belive that everyone who cares about people's rights is a commie go ahead, but don't involve the rest of the world into your American biased views, unions are clearly working in a lot of countries that's not the US.
@@Sarah-hy8ws let's just agree with the fact that the EU and US are two different places with very different people. So the same things may benefit people differently
The 25 year old is doing amazing on that salary, just goes to show that being financially responsible can set you up for long term success regardless of your income level.
@@racewiththefalcons1 They are at every airline I'm aware of. They give you a monthly and yearly uniform allowance and expect %100 compliance to uniform standards.
Rick Shaw this is true but with some companies (like the one I work for) we get a yearly credit with the uniform supplier which doesn’t sell tights or shoes. We are expected to pay for those ourselves. Other airlines (i.e. United) take the cost of your uniform and luggage of your paycheck.
johnny walker wHeN yOu GrOw Up you’ll understand that there isn’t a need for a $500 car payment when she lives in a big city where ubers are readily available, and won’t be home enough to even use the car.
Hey Graham, about 5 months ago I got this sudden interest in finance and business. Well, your channel is the best channel I have found for fulfilling that interest. Literally, now when I see like Meet Kevin or someone else critiquing you I get defensive. I have probably watched at least 75 of your videos now on this channel and the Graham Stephan channel and none of them have disappointed me at all. I opened my first store/business a few days ago and I credit a lot of it to you. Thank you so much for being such a big inspiration to me and PLEASE keep making content and making $.20 iced coffee!
FYI the taxi trip to “Jessheim” is fair, because that’s in Norway and we don’t have Uber here to support our taxi drivers who earn fair wages, and work for Norwegian companies that pay taxes 🤷🏼♀️
They keep their expenses low and try to make the most of their salaries, that is a great strategy for building long term wealth regardless of how low ones income might be it’s all possible by saving and investing regularly
You have to wear heels outside of the plane but once you get onto the plane you can change to flats. America's airlines are actually pretty lenient on uniforms and appearances. Other airlines in other countries require pulled up hair, hats, or a certain standards of makeup. Obviously everyone knows there are other requirements in other countries such as height, weight and age but won't go there lol.
Once you begin serving you change to flats, but boarding and deplaning heels are required....also airlines in the US tend to work more flights and work longer hours in a day compared to other countries with no “break rooms/ crew corridors “ or an official break for meals ...but America is slowly catching up for things like that
Yes sorry during serving can be changed to flats. I have friends who work for American, Southwest, EVA, Cathay, Garuda and Emirates. From what I’ve learned flight attendants outside of the US are treated worse with lower pay and less benefits (no non rev travel benefits for example so can’t commute) Also flight attendants outside the US do not have flexibility in their hours as they do in the US unless your on reserve.
I’ve heard the same unfortunately 😞 , all have pros and cons . Hopefully one day the profession will be more stable and respected globally as a whole . Flight attendants work and train hard to do what they do (it’s more than it seems)
ARNESAH J For sure! All the extra hours commuting to and from the airport, the health impact of being in the air for longer periods, jet lag, etc. So many things people don’t realize that make it so hard for this profession
1. Makeup, stockings, hairstyles and heels are compulsory. - So they have to spend on foundations, blushers, lipliner, lipstick, and mascara. BC your supervisor WILL check. - Hair gel/spray, hair tie, hairpins, and hairnets are all compulsory. - Heels must have a certain height to them. 2. They have LONG HOURS. They can spend 8 to 12 hours standing for their entire shifts. For women, its worst bc they have to wear heels. LONG HOURS + HEELS -->>> Really, really tired. You will have to travel home and the airport is always located at a FAR area. Hence, no energy to cook. 3. Flying can wreak your damn face. Additionally, women are MADE to wear makeup for their job. So, their skins are way worst than their male colleagues. 4. When you're overseas for a few hours/days, you don't pay for mobile internet services. So you can't take an Uber. *PS I know all of this due to my Airport staff's training. I was made to wear makeup, hair stuff, painful heels, long hour shiftsx6 days a week, and had long local transportation. I return home just in time for my eight-hour rest, woke up, shower, go to work, and do the same thing again. No one has time to cook man. @The Graham Stephan Show Love your show btw
Ooh video idea: You and your girlfriend both go shopping for workwear, then compare the costs. I'd actually be curious to see if being a woman is more expensive.
Being a woman is more expensive. If you want to be lazy it's not so bad, but if you keep up with hair and makeup (even if you do it yourself) it adds up.
It depends on your job. If your dress code requires professional clothes, make-up, heals, and a short list of acceptable hair styles. It can cost. (Jobs where this was a requirement in my job history: barista, retail, government, and secretarial work.)
@@silentj624 i am a woma and i disagree. Makeup lasts a long time and hair can be very low maintenence and still look good. I have had times where i spent a lot and times where i spent vey little, and achieved similar results. We can do whatever we want
@@d1492ay that is 3 months away. It is possible demand comes back, and employees with low seniority like these 2 are saved from furloughs. Seems unlikely tho
they might be mandated to wear stockings if they wear a skirt. some airlines are really strict with dress code, I know Hawaiian airlines is incredibly strict. at one point, you couldn't have a tattoo even if it wasn't visible.
When my dad's colleague interviewed for Pan Am she had a tattoo on her ankle. She was told she could have the job but had to get rid of the tattoo. She went home and sanded it off in order to get the job. This was in the late 70's.
Instacart is actually a justified expense in NYC. If you walk everywhere it can take hours a week to shop. The closest store to you might not have good prices, the store with the best prices might be a mile away with no bus route.
You have to wear stockings as a flight attendant. They conceal imperfections on your legs and their is an outdated school of thought that if you wear stockings you won’t distract men.
Hey Graham!! I know you read the comments so I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I started watching your videos in October and absorbing your mindset through these videos has completely changed my financial situation and life trajectory. Thank you.
As a Delta employee; she has to wear stocking as part of the dress code. It’s one of the many dumb dress code policies placed on ladies in the airline industry. Like so graham can see
My sister gave up her orthodontic career to become a flight attendant. She would be treating her patients and listen to their stories of traveling here, there, everywhere, so she became a f/a and would work her patients around her schedule and just decided to do it all the way. Twenty-five years later, she is still loving it. They get paid more than that with the company she works for. They are also required to wear a watch at all times and make-up too.
12:36 During my winter exam session I would go grocery shopping at 3-4 am after studying. Best time ever, nobody is around, no queue, everyrhing is silent, the city sleeps and deep down you feel like you are fucking the system. but then again, I was in my exam session, so I would wake up in the PM part of the clock :))
Graham, nothing made me laugh harder today then when I saw your Webcam face on the women flight attendants body. It was hilarious 🤣. Keep up the quality content!
The Graham Stephan Show graham when you going to react to that? In an hour etc? I watched it about 30mins after it came out and was waiting for your reaction video.
Female flight attendants should get paid a little more considering they are required to wear makeup and some airlines do require female flight attendants to wear heels at least 2 inches high while on the tarmac or out in the airport. I sure hope they at least deduct those expenses off their taxes.
@@onetwo8932 nah, because women wear different makeup and makeup brands have different values and some women wear way more than they should and are very wasteful with it. Just a makeup allowance and extra shoe allowance would be fine. Definitely not paying for all the makeup they want to buy. Them women can go crazy with that makeup lol
I love your videos, Graham. Thank you for doing what you do. I appreciate the time you put into making great content: the clean editing, the quality, the content. Well done, mate.
Another thing with stockings besides them being required for uniform: wearing skirts without anything underneath hurts our thighs and they chafe, so stocking help with that. And they make legs look nicer too
Some people live in these “luxury” cities for other reasons like maybe they where born there or their family lives near by and they have a reason to stay.
The needle roller he bought for $34.77 is the same thing she spends $550 on a salon to get done. There’s literally no reason to go to a salon or spa for microneedling! He’s doing amazing
Thank you!! When you addressed on how outdated the shoe rule was my heart jumped for joy. Sadly we have to wear the heels and stockings both are none negotiable unless we wear pants.
7:20 guy pays $34.77 for a derma roller so he can needle himself for as long as the needles stay sharp. 9:03 pays $550 for one micro needling treatment done every month or two...
You must understand as well that flight attendants don’t get paid until the board flight is closed. So while passengers are boarding the aircraft flight attendant are not getting paid until the everyone is boarded and the doors have closed. Yes flight attendant are require to wear heels when walking through the airport. It’s in almost all company’s handbook along with stockings and good quality stockings are highly expensive.
As a caregiver to 3 people with disabilities in my home, I have my groceries delivered because it saves me time and i can't always go out when I need to.
I'm still living with my parents too (rent free) saving lots of money but I feel like society is pushing me to move out already lol so thank you it was good to hear you support it lol
MajesticF0X many people go into good paying jobs but need a college degree for it which can take longer than till your 21 even straight out of highschool. Mot to mention needing time to save up once you get a job a larger emergency fund, moving costs, deposits on a place and needing proof of income to even get a place
Just to answer to your question about stockings, if you are flight attendant it is mandatory to wear stocking it's part of the style and image"guidelines" of the airline moreover if you don't wear medical compression stocking(this stuff is so expensive) you end up with all of medical issues in the legs and lower belly. My friend had to go through a medical intervention after flying for 4years because she didnt wear medical stockings
I was just watching a ton of your videos and I saw this video but then was super surprised that it had under 10k views... after 10 minutes I realized this was uploaded today xD
Interesting video to watch as I am a Flight Attendant as well! Some things that caught my attention were: 1. The stockings point. Yes, it is mandatory to wear stockings BUT that's only if you wear the dress or skirt. Not sure about airlines in other countries but in Canada, the airlines here allow women to purchase uniform pants and you could wear socks with those instead. Also, if we wanted to purchase compression stockings/socks, those costs are covered by our benefits :) Side note: I even have some coworkers who are female and they wear the mens uniform with the tie all the time (men are allowed to wear the dress as well, but it has to completely follow the uniform standards with the stockings and scarf, etc.). 2. For the 2 airlines I worked at, women also don't necessarily have to wear heels in the airport, but there is a list of requirements the shoes must meet to be compliant with company standards. Plus we have winter here! Imagine wearing heels in snow, haha. 3. Makeup is also not mandatory for women at my airline when working, but if you do wear makeup, there is a standard of how it should look.
Spends all that money on a car and pays extra to have groceries delivered. Shopping at night is the best when nobody is there, especially in the middle of the week.
Stockings are uniform standard for professionalism - you have to wear them. If you want to step up and wear compression hose that's a whole other ball game (and expense)! Also lots of airlines require female Flight attendant to wear heels in the airport and for boarding - once you are in-flight you can change into galley shoes/flats but heels must be on for landing - you can be reprimanded for not being in uniform standards if you don't comply.
I just saw you on the Selling Sunset show!!! The face you make while listening to Roman talk about Davina being rude to him... can't. stop. laughing !!!
As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry, I understand the grocery part really well. My body would ache so much after shifts that I would rather starve for a night/day than go the grocery shopping.
Hi :) im a flight attendant and our dress code says we have to wear high heels greater than 4cm less than 7.5cm in height while visible to guests in the airport. That includes getting to work walking into the airport. We usually walk about 2.5km in heels before we get to the plane where we can wear our flats. We are only meant to change into our flats after take off so when we great and say goodbye to guests we should be in heels but noone really minds with that lol Heel width and toe shape are also specified for our shoes as well as shininess. Its a whole thing! They do pay some money towards our shoes once a year because our heels usually cost between 120-220 bucks.
Stockings are an old school etiquette that in most cases still work, just like the flight attendants. When I was still in school, girl had to keep their hair tidy and tied up if long, or just simple and neat if it's short. If you attended something special like an opening ceremony or anything, you had to wear stockings if you wore a skirt or a dress, and your skirt or dress had to be of certain length, kind of just a ''lady'' thing from way back, and it was supposed to show class and all that. In most cases this isn't relevant anymore, but I feel like some old things have their own charm, even if as a kid you hated it, it's still sometimes you experienced and have knowledge about later on.
So i was watching about 12 something of your videos in a row. My butt started hurting, so i returned to the home page to to just stop watching. Then BHAM., you uploaded this video 7 minutes ago. 😂😂😂😂
I'm a flight attendant, and I do remember watching this video! Actually, for us female Flight Attendants, we are required to wear stockings, heels, and makeup, to varying degrees of course. Some airlines require red lipstick, for example, and others don't. I buy orthopedic-quality shoes and compression stockings, because I'm up on my feet all day in a tube that is pressurized at 36k feet. It is a NECESSITY for the job. I get some of that cost subsidized, but it's still a lot, and my shoes and stockings have to look a certain way so I'm compliant. We also have to spend a lot of money on hair and nails too. I try to always just look neat and professional, but even with just going the DIY route, I am still spending a lot to maintain my hair and my nails, because again, being up in the air that long it dries your hair, skin, and nails.
