I was swayed by a leftist in high school. Now, years later, I'm waiting for a book of Thomas Sowell to come in the mail. Individual freedom is important, my fellow citizens. We need to respect our fellow man, and not coerce, but persuade, unlike the coercive leftists.

As someone who once thought I was a Leftist, I can relate. I thought I was Left until I noticed the authoritarian and anti-individualist core of their views. The far Right is just as bad, but the Left holds far more institutional power than the Right.

In Britain and other parts of Europe you can be charged and convicted of a hate crime for public controversial statements that simply oppose prevailing beliefs. I could listen to Friedman all day; literally! I love how plain and simply Friedman can put things, so that we can explain it to others easily, or share his speeches. Friedman often goes into the simple principles behind "force" in his speeches; even when the speech may be about drugs, capitalism, welfare. I wish more people were aware of the ethics of using force. And were aware that we are using force to a great extent in the us.

Capitalism is THE honest system for honest people. People who are honest about themselves are Capitalists, because they don't claim to have other's interests in mind. That's an honest person. As Milton said "I should run away as far as possible from the man who tells, and truly believes, that he has my best interest in mind!". Also just because a person has their own interests in mind doesn't mean he is incapable of caring about someone else. He must care about someone else to survive, and it's in HIS BEST interest to care about others. But to form a system in which you ask people to put others' interest above yours, that's crazy.

The reason I give when they ask me why I favor Capitalism over Socialism/Collectivism is simple: Socialism ASSUMES that men, given power over other men, will not use that power for their own gain. It assumes that men's hearts are not corruptible. Capitalism DOES assume that man is imperfect and "capitalizes" on it. It uses that self-interest to it's advantage and there really is no way for one to gain over another without coercion. Which happens anyway no matter if there is a form of government or not. Capitalism, in it's true form, minimizes the advantage gained of one over another and forces one to gain advantage, through MUTUAL benefit, over many others. Only when government is inserted into an economy is there a rise in corruption on a large scale. When the government comes in and says "this must happen and this must happen." Then there comes the ability for those who have profited greatly to use their money to gain advantage, through MEN in government, over everyone all at once.

GM was a mistake to bail out. An inefficient company like that NEEDS to collapse, give way to other competitors to take market share and compete..and then let GM recover. Milton, i think, said a great deal about this too. Let's not take action appealing to our emotions; let's not think of pride but of competition and efficiency. Tyranny for the good of the people may be the worst, but that is only because it is done with the approval of the man's own conscience, and is therefore endless - Lewis

Your point is well taken. The core of Libertarian economics is the assumption that the best outcome can be expected if we focus on ourselves as we look out for number one and let the have nots enjoy "freedom" until they show up at the door of the palace waving torches and pitchforks. Milton wouldn't be caught dead saying "let them eat cake" but I understand how his perspective has contributed to creating the situation we find ourselves in.

The pursuit of neo liberalism, the claim's of winning the "cold war", Bushes "New World Order", the crisis of 2008, the 20 year war and 2.3 trillion spent on nation building are what have brought on the problems capitalism faces. As Marx quipped Capitalism digs its own grave. The long retreat by labor is over. The fear of socialism comes as the ruling sees its own death on the horizon.

Milton Friedman used the word "freedom" when he should be championing "liberty." As the philosopher Mortimer J. Adler wrote, "liberty is freedom constrained by justice." What even very thoughtful and sincere people who want nothing more than a good life for all persons cannot agree upon is the right balance between the protection of rights to property or to human rights. A fundamental problem is the failure to reach consensus on the distinction between property that is legitimately private and property that is legitimately public. Henry George provided just such a distinction. He advanced a labor and capital goods basis for private property, with land (i.e., nature) as the source of private property, the commons from which all tangible wealth must come. He then came up with the only practical means for allocation of nature for private appropriation: competitive bidding with an annual payment adjusted periodically based on the changing potential annual rental value of whatever natural asset is controlled.

As someone who got hit by Hurricane Sandy, I have good firsthand knowledge of this. If there are gas shortages, yes, gas stations will jack up prices. And then what do people do outside the affected area do? They bring in more gas to take advantage of that. And then prices come down again eventually. Is it unfortunate at first? Yes, if you care more about the number of dollars you own than you do about not living in the freezing cold for a week and a half.

It's a balance that must be constructed. And regulation in the purpose of advocating markets should be conducted. Not one that acts strictly as a barrier, but as a partner in ensuring safety and even having firms purpose their own safety standards with some minimum guidelines. Especially as it pertains to implementation of newer technologies that cut costs in the long run, but are often to capital intensive in short term investments alone by any single business or group.

My neighbor is from Poland. During Glasnost she went back home and said "Glasnost is terrible, potatoes are 6 dollars a pound!" I said "you have to give the market economy time to work: what would you do if you were a potato farmer? you will plant potatoes on every inch of land, hoping to get rich. But then many other farmers will do that too, and when they bring the all to market, there will be a huge oversupply and the price will drop lower than it was when it was controlled.

To extend Milton Friedman's logic to software development. The Linux OS was developed by freely cooperating developers around the world who stood to mutually benefit from the open source OS. This style of development was in stark contrast to how MAC OS X or Windows OS developed, these OS developed in a more central style -Companies like Microsoft/Apple overseeing its development inside closed doors etc. If we look at the OS user base today, Linux leads by a huge margin, in the overall OS user base (I am not talking only about the desktop OS market). Today after hearing Mr. Friedman it all seems to add up.

One issue I've always had with Friedman, love him though I do: The reason people judge motives instead of outcomes is because it's easy. It's easy to glean their motive. It's very difficult to nail down exact results of an action, such as claiming that the fed lowering interest rates almost to zero caused the housing bubble. Furthermore, the proponents of the ill-conceived act will refuse to admit, to the death, that their act had any part in the problem, finding an infinite supply of ancillary causes to blame.

The government employs scientists that uses scientific methods and provides factual information and ensures such products and services are carried out in measurable and verifiable manner without bias/favoritism.Such studies are rationally reliable.Without standards and enforcement of such standards you get chaotic markets prone to panics in demand and rampant fraud which adds to opportunity costs as well as knowledge costs becomes higher for all. One particular is commercial and civil aviation.

i don't feel familiar with a word of what you have just said. I was criticising Lewis. I still stand by 'you don't have to do anything in the free-market if you don't want to' yes that's true. The only force brought on is that by the government, who says you have to give parts of your income to others' healthcare and other social needs. Yes, the result for 'not doing anything' in a free-market is severe, but that's the point of having it: you have a major incentive to work hard.

@garry Morrison, the issue isn't whether any system is more humane over the other as much as what in practice results in more humanitarian progress. Capitalism isn't perfect, but it more often than not provides the material needs of humanity more broadly and effectively than governments are able to.

Morality is a systematized set of values. Values are held by individuals. The moral code may be agreed upon between individuals. But values are never collective. My hunger is not your hunger. 1) As long as I have representation and ability to represent such government and what the government spends on has benefit to stimulate transactions that my directly or indirectly benefit me. Its the same as a business imposing property rights. I've read both. And have read arguments against such libertarian ideas. You get a slippery slope when judiciary are elected and markets forces tend to consolidate forces you get a few who again control you pockets and what is available to purchase.

The private sector hires scientists just as qualified and competent but at a lower cost because it is not done with your indiscriminately spent tax dollars. The savings are then sent on to the consumer who gets a better product, (remember, when competition thrives prices go down and quality goes up to remain competitive). This is true in ALL areas of manufacturing and consumerism. You have yet to prove me wrong. Reputable companies don't become reputable because they cut corners.

I understand certain regulations can be harmful if not probably conducted and accessed the benefits and costs in implementing them should be calculated. Regulation lite: Taiwan or Vietnam, many scared to purchase from vendors and often seek products and services from regulated countries even at great costs. And over regulated like India on business entry and investment regs by common citizens in China lead to miss-allocation of resources: slow responding markets-- lack of supply/oversupply.

Dozer explains to him that it provides all the essential vitamins and nutrients a person could need to survive. Later on in the movie, Cypher is seen eating a steak inside the Matrix in front of Mr. Anderson. The Importance of the steak is in its symbolism. He would rather have the illusion of an amazing steak than the nutrient-rich slurry. It is very human Perhaps a silly point.

Exactly, the price will be based on the perceived value to the purchaser at the moment of sale. The price is only loosely based on the level of effort required to produce the item. Change the time of purchase to even one hour earlier and the perceived value changes. Is this a voluntary transaction? Is this a coercive transaction? The agent of coercion is not the bottle seller, but clearly the dying man feels that he must purchase the item or suffer dire consequences. Is that not coercion?
@benoitjarry4353
@benoitjarry4353 11 лет назад
The sale of the water bottle is not about charity. The bottle man can/will, and should/will, sell the bottle at whatever price he believes he can get away with. That price is based on the need of the purchaser at the time of purchase. If the time of the purchase were even only one hour earlier, the price of the bottle would be different because the value placed on the item by the purchaser would be different, but the product itself and the level of effort needed to produce it would not.

The gas price did not get jacked up during hurricane sandy, the government hit gas stations that did try to do that with heavy fines. There was a gas shortage, briefly. And who intervened? The government - alternate odd/even license days to buy gas to cut down on gas lines, etc. The government is paying for the massive hurricane repairs, not the free market. Without the government, the beach front communities would still be in ruins.

To clarify before I dig myself into a hole, I do not believe that monopolies are impossible without government, I just think they are highly unlikely. This is of course a subject of ideals rather than reality, but I do not think it goes beyond the scope of political science & economics. Something discussed in political science is why these ideal systems do not work and if you have a classroom of 30 students, you'll get 30 different answers and most of the time they are all correct.

Everyday purchases one doesn't have an infinite amount of time to do research. If we lived forever and time wasn't a reality, than your ideal world would work. But we live in a world with finite time. As for cluttering bureaucracy, a way to cut down on such waste is to regulate standards and treat them as advocacy of the industry rather than a barrier. Providing information and implementation on an industry quality controls, rather than just setting and enforcing quality controls.

Benoit, 1. The dying man will get his water because the price will necessarily be affordable to him. It would be stupid of the bottle man to charge more than the thirsty man can afford, because then he will get nothing. 2. If the dying man has 'foresight', it should be upon him to provide his own water for such situations.

Now if I understand your point correctly, you are saying that since man is a social specie morality is common value. However, I believe the only common value men hold is self interest. After all all morality, social laws, governments, and political systems are derived because we are self interested (see previous comment). We only come together because we need each other. And therefore, morality is a solely individual value manifested in the best example of human self interest: society.

"pure" socialism or "pure" capitalism aren't the only options. Unlike Friedman or Hayek, who suggest that optimal "central planning" is impossible and therefore we should leave it to the free markets, I see markets more like the weather-- it may certainly be impossible to "central plan" the weather, but that does not then mean we don't need umbrellas or snow shovels.

But many markets require some set standards, food, medicine, building and fire codes, and of course natural monopolies like gas lines, electrical, water, and oligopolies as well which rely on other technology to even exist outside of monopolies like cell companies rely on access to telephone and data lines. Many regulations on the regulated monopolies require such access in those markets otherwise you would have economies of scales duplicated making technologies even more expensive.

No. People are complex. What economists have tried to do for the last hundred years is quantify the market and most systems completely ignore the human factor and try to mathematically calculate demand without that key variable. While we are very close to calculating demand, it requires collecting large volumes of data and having someone interpret that data such as a statistician.

Well, actually, a wolf brings hunting prowess (i.e. labor) to a hunt. And then he gets food proportional to the help he provided. The sad thing is that a wolf can only provide hunting prowess, so runts always eat last. A human, however, can learn new skills and improve his productivity.

You are asking a crucial question and I think you already know the answer. There is no such evidence of "Railroads as government coordinated monopolies". Democratic governments do not create monopolies, it is monopolies who subvert democratic governments. Evidence for this can be found in economist Michael Perelman's copiously researched study, Railroading Economics, available on Amazon.

Ah. Again, this is the human factor. People think something always has to be done. If something isn't "ideal" (that word comes up a lot), then obviously something is wrong. Politicians especially like to ignore that turn of words: "If it's not broke, don't fix it." People who think things can always be better piss me off. I grew up in Music and I used to spend hours combing through the lines of music trying to make subtle changes in dynamics and expression. Wasn't worth the time.

You are asking why someone would want to know how people will react to changes in their environment before those changes take place?... changes in impulse...predicting demand accurately ahead of time...

I think the point is that you cannot have socialism without tyranny to suppress liberty. If you do not suppress liberty, you'll get free trade, which is capitalism.

You can't have no or minimal government or no or minimal property ownership. A balance must be struck or you destroy aggregate demand or supply.

Your post is pretty much one big logical flaw after another. From your characterization of wolf pack to the end. Your final point about the only reason you would try to save a person from aggression is based on an expectation of recipocity is chilling in it's amorality. I would attempt to save you based on moral objections to the initiation of force on an individaul.

There has never been a communist country in existence. A communist system is where everyone is equal; where all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs. In all of the "communist" countries Friedman mentions - Germany and Russia to name a couple - there were hierarchies amongst society with the Government. These countries were operating under totalitarianism and fascism rather than communism. The furthest human society has gotten to communism on Marx's historical timeline is only at socialism: by embedding socialist policies.

I would suggest that there has never been a capitalist country in existence, where all property is privately owned and individuals have full allodial title to their property and no transactions were regulated by a third party.

I would agree with both of you. Would it then be fair to say that attempting any such systems is all an illusion as the Feudalism (for lack of a better term), mentality will always hijack any system or that they have never succeeded their power just masquerade it with different terminologies. The mathamagicians and slight of hand language manipulation, yet, underneath is the same old empire with land barons and serfs.

Of course there are capitalist societies. It is the reason why the top 1% own 90% of all property. Capitalism by very definition, is where the means of production are LARGELY owned by private interests. This is the case worldwide and anyone who thinks the Government owns things is misled. And feudalism died long ago. It has expanded into capitalism as Marx said it would.

So if you own a piece of land, and you don't pay property taxes, will the government not take the land? If you build a building on the land without getting a permit, can the state not force you to destroy it? If the state decides they want "your" land, can they not force you off and only recompense you with "fair market value"(don't know about elsewhere, in Canada they certainly can)? If you decide you want to mine the minerals on "your" land, are you not forced to also buy the mineral rights, go through boatloads of permits, and then pay the state a royalty? Individuals cannot own land. It is only leased, and the illusion of ownership is given to allow for tax revenue and control. Does the government not take on debt and use the future labour of its citizens as collateral? Part of the reason for their being a war on drugs is the state needs its citizens to be good little productive members of society. The government's abilities to collect from drug revenues are limited. Let's go by your definition of capitalism. Can the state not force a business to cease it trade if it decides that there is a monopoly, or if it wants to run the monopoly itself, or simply make the product illegal? Are farmers not subsidised to the Nth? Can the state not block mergers? Again, there is the illusion of private control, but really the state has complete control. You are from Australia, no? Is it not a constitutional monarchy?
@tstbb
@tstbb 9 лет назад
Of course the State has control. But when I refer to the ownership of land, I am talking about the 'legal title' of land. Maybe I misrepresented myself, which I will concede and perhaps my legal brain wasn't working too well. In Canada and in Australia, you don't own the land. Nor does the Government. The Queen (Sovereign) owns the land. In other countries it works differently. But for the example you just gave, I must point out the inaccuracies. You only share an interest in that land (whether it be a claim to the land or a legal estate). People in government and the owners of large corporations unfortunately own most of the wealth (90% to be approximate). To understand property rights, one must understand that property is a socially constructed principle. Therefore, the people with the power control the demarcation of these property rights, which is why so many people have them taken away, as you say. It is the reason why women own 1% of all world property, why black americans are amongst some of the poorest people in the world etc. In my country, the Aborgines had their land taken from them as a result of Colonialisation and property rights have been shaped to disbenefit them even more in the 21st Century. Besides, even if I concede your argument, mine still stands. If the Government does have complete control, then that does not make Capitalism anymore humane; when many Governments are pre-selected by the media and other large corporate interests. And as to the war on drugs, I agree that some drugs should be prohibited, but many should be de-criminalized/legalized and taxes can be made in the same way that Colorado and many other States do.
