The News Media only allows us to see a handful of protesters where the majority of students do not protest ..BTW, The ones who are protesting Capitalism and Donald Trump are being payed by Billionaire -Ex Nazi George Soros .. ( George Soros worked for Hitler in his younger days ) Obama is a community organizer and Soros funds Obama's -"ORGANIZING FOR AMERICA " to advertise and pay protesters and professional agitators .. for this anti capitalist movement

Equally as clueless though politically. Cultural marxism is a disease. Every question boils down to "how can we coerce productive Americans to give up their rights or tax dollars to (insert disadvantaged group) because that's the only way to fix this problem."

@@tiborzkarate1 i think you did not understood anything. First of all you mistakenly concluded that he "diverted the question". He didnt you Einstein, he explained the deductive consequences of implementing such a thing. Its something you might find hard to understand, but when you have an idea you need to logic your way into possible outcomes, because it doesnt matter how good you thing your idea might look at first or how compassive you think your idea is, the reality is it can just not work at all or even have an inverse effect instead of what you would seek to achieve. Sorry, reality is hard. Also i might suggest you do more research cause there is no such thing as woman being exploited. Also what he said is if woman are better and is obvious then they would have no chance of gaining more. In fact they would actually be exploited for less pay than they would deserve. If for whatever reason they are less productive, then equal pay is also terrible cause why would you take a less productive person for the same cost as a higher productive one?

Hithere Man Oh? I have to admit I know very little about Stieglitz. But I did do a cursory search of him to see if there were any videos of him debating an entire auditorium of people hostile to his ideology - you know, the way Friedman did over and over again. I can't seem to find anything in the couple of minutes I spent. Regardless of what your or my bias is in regards to economics, it takes some serious guts to take people on the way he did, all without raising his voice or losing his temper. Friedman is THE master debater.

Anyone up for a challenge? Here is why Milton Friedman’s ideas are nonsense. “Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.” - Benito Mussolini So what happened after around 1980? The USA is now the most highly unequal industrialized country in the world with the highest incarceration rate in the world, with 40 years of stagnant wages. On the other hand progressive Norway just shut down 27 prisons due to lack of crime and has low inequality. All this inequality and poverty started around 1980 with Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan who promoted Milton Friedman’s policies. Friedman was adviser to Ronald Reagan. So began the movement of 40 years of tax cuts for the Rich and corporations, austerity, cutting social programs, environmental deregulation, deregulation of banks/finance, Underfunding the FTC, EPA and FDA, privatization, free trade, eliminating anti-monopoly laws, legalizing bribery laws to politicians, cutting and trying to privatize Social Security/pensions, privatizing education, Medicaid/healthcare. Its no coincidence that around 1980 wages stoped going up with productivity. Conservatives like to accuse the left of a wealth transfer, what they don’t tell you is that there has already been a wealth transfer from the poor and middle-class to the rich to the tune of about $50 trillion while wages for the poor and middle class have been flat. This is according to Ronald Reagan’s own budget director David Stockman, who now regrets implementing supply side austerity free market policies, he states this: “In 1985, the top five percent of the households - the wealthiest five percent - had net worth of $8 trillion - which is a lot. Today, after serial bubble after serial bubble, the top five per cent have net worth of $50 trillion. The top five percent have gained more wealth than the whole human race had created prior to 1980.” People need to understand that there are two kinds of dominant economists out there currently, one is conservative free market supply side economist and the other is the progressive demand-side economist. Conservative supply side economics policies have been proven not to work over and over again, yet the rightwing rich and conservative politicians still promote them. The reason people in Detroit are being poisoned with leaded water is precisely because of Friedman’s idea that big government is evil and his idea that everything should privatized. The reason Detroit is in shambles economically is precisely because of his free trade policies. Ross Perot who was running for president decades ago said “once these free trade policies are implemented you’re going to hear a huge sucking sound manufacturing leaving the US.” He was absolutely right, Detroit went from a prosperous manufacturing base to what it is today, all because of cheap labor and no workers rights/unions. Government for the people by the people is the only thing that prevents it from being overtaken by the rightwing rich and corporations, which is precisely what’s happened to the US after the conservative bill 1978 Boston v Bellotti and Citizens United was passed. Prior to these two being passed. giving unlimited funding to politicians was called called bribery, today is called “free-speech” and “corporations are people too” Government is the only thing that prevents governments from being bought out. The US was bought and sold over 40 years ago, this is why it’s currently on the brink of revolution. When I asked President Jimmy Carter about Citizens United and this doctrine of money as speech in 2015, he said: “It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president. They eliminated the Glass Steagall act which allowed commercial banks to merge with investment banks which in turn led to the 2008 crash. They eliminated the Sherman Antitrust Law which disallowed monopolies. There used to be hundreds of media outlets prior to the elimination of the Sherman Anti-Trust law, now most of the media is owned by a handful people. They eliminated The Fairness Doctrine. This was a law that was in place since 1940 which required that any broadcaster had to debate both sides of the issue equally. Republican Dick Cheney and George Bush removing it. They attacked unions. Unions fell from a high of 34% membership who is low as 10%. Many Americans today - especially women - are working more hours than they did three decades ago. But they’re not seeing a corresponding growth in wages. Americans now work the longest hours per week compared to other developed nations with no paid sick leave, no paid vacations, and no healthcare. In France, Germany and Scandinavian countries workers get 6 to 8 weeks paid vacation. Many Americans - especially women - are working more hours than they did three decades ago. But they’re not seeing a corresponding growth in wages. Chile has one of the longest work hours per week with low wage payouts. Life expectancy dropped. In 1980, the U.S. was right in the middle of the pack of peer nations in life expectancy at birth. But by the mid-2000s, it was at the bottom of the pack.” Milton Friedman stated that his free market policies would produce democracy, this certainly did not happen in Chile. The economy in Chile worked wonderfully for the top 1% of course. If Friedman‘s ideas were so wonderful, why did the Chilean people reject his policies? The Chilean people should be jumping up and down on the streets praising Milton Friedman, yet they are rioting in the streets. “Statistically, 80% of the Chilean people have no money left at the end of the month. Senior citizens receives $180 per month. 33% of Chilean GDP goes to the 1%, that’s higher than almost anywhere else in the world.” The propaganda that the middle class in Chile has grown under Milton Friedman’s ideas is nonsense. A person making $180 per month in Chile is categorized as being middle class, this is how propaganda from conservative rightwing think tanks like the Cato Institute, Liberty Pen, Free To Chose etc skew the data to make Milton Friedman look good. In terms of healthcare, approximately 700,000 people In the US go bankrupt because they can’t afford healthcare or they are turned down because of pre-existing conditions. Approximately 50,000 Americans die each year because they can’t afford healthcare. Ron Paul who’s a fan of Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand, stated that he thought that it was ok if someone just died in front of a hospital if they can’t afford healthcare because they were disabled or just had a run of bad luck. Ron Paul later backtracked and said “well there’s always the churches” which is bullshit. How many people die or go bankrupt in France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Finland etc. etc, ZERO. For your own good, my advice is not to listen in Milton Friedman. Looking forward to your replies. P.S. Just to be clear, i attended 2 of Milton's lectures during my college years & ive always considered myself a leftist, however, this is precisely how we went about debating economic doctrine. We were kids with an opportunity to speak to a Nobel Prize winning individual & without even thinking about it we knew he would be in a position to educate us on various topics. Its hard to explain but back then we kind of "knew our place" when it came to certain topics & theres simply no substitute for experience. We all saw these lectures as pure education even though we might have differing opinions the insights provided were always welcomed & expected, nowadays its like people think criticism or disagreement is somehow a measure of your morals, character etc & are quick to label you as something horrid the moment you disagree.

@@brandyharding7692 Life expectancy in the US started to gradually dropping around 1980 with Ronald Reagan implementing supply side economics with the advice of Milton Friedman. Poverty, inequality, lack of access to healthcare, cutting social programs, economic stress, Increased addiction, increased suicides etc, all started to increase around 1980. On the other hand progressive left leaning demand side economic countries are increasing life in life expectancy. Skeptical? Do your own research. You are being ripped off by the rich and by conservative economists and politicians. Here’s the list: - Working hours. The U.S. is the Most Overworked Developed Nation in the World. According to the Center for American PROGRESS on the topic of work and family life balance, “in 1960, only 20 percent of mothers worked. Today, 70 percent of American children live in households where all adults are employed in order to TRY and afford a middle class lifestyle. According to the ILO, “Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers.”Using data by the U.S. BLS, the average productivity per American worker has increased 400% since 1950. One way to look at that is that it should only take one-quarter the work hours, or 11 hours per week, to afford the same standard of living as a worker in 1950 (or our standard of living should be 4 times higher). Is that the case? Obviously not. Someone is profiting, it’s just not the average American worker. In the U.S., 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females work more than 40 hours per week. * At least 134 countries have laws setting the maximum length of the work week; the U.S. does not. - American Paid Vacation Time & Sick Time: There is not a federal law requiring paid sick days in the United States. The U.S. remains the only industrialized country in the world that has no legally mandated annual leave. In every country included except Canada and Japan (and the U.S., at the low point, workers get at least 20 paid vacation days. In France and Finland, Germany, and Nordic countries they get 4 to 6 weeks pained vacation. - All through American history. productivity wages were going up in tandem. This all ended around 1980 with the implementation of conservative supply side economics which promoted less government, deregulation, tax cuts for the rich, underfunding or cutting social programs and an attack on unions. - The US has the highest income inequality of any industrialized country. Not so before 1980. - The U.S. has far and away the highest rates of poverty in the developed world. In addition, the extent of U.S. income and wealth inequality also tends to be extreme when compared to other industrialized countries. Not so before 1980. - The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Not so before 1980. - Homicide: Americas fourth on the list of highest homicide countries in the world. - Economic competitiveness: The IMD World Competitiveness Center reports that the U.S. is ranked 10th in its 2020 Competitiveness Report. After ranking first in 2018, the U.S. fell to the third spot in 2019. The seven-point tumble to 10th place in 2020 represents the lowest the U.S. has ever been in the annual ranking system by far.6. Not so before 1980. - 22% of kids in America live in poverty. Second to Mexico. Not so before 1980. - Animal extension: 60% of animal populations have wiped out since 1970. - Minimum wage. The minimum wage in the US has been stagnant for decades. After adjusting for inflation, however, today’s average hourly wage has just about the same purchasing power it did in 1978, following a long slide in the 1980s and early 1990s and bumpy, inconsistent growth since then. In fact, in real terms average hourly earnings peaked more than 45 years ago: The $4.03-an-hour rate recorded in January 1973 had the same purchasing power that $23.68 would today. Another parts of the world like Australia and Sweden a McDonald’s worker makes around $20 per hour starting. - Education: The US had the best educational system in the world, but not anymore. The truth is that the U.S. ranks near the bottom in a survey of students’ math skills in 30 industrialized countries. Not so before 1980. - The US is also the only advanced economy in the world not to have full health coverage of its population. 50,000 Americans die each year because of lack of healthcare. Not before 1980. - Child mortality is higher in the US than any other advanced economy. Not so before 1980. - Americans also live shorter lives: Average US life expectancy is 78.8 years, nearly two years less than the OECD average. Not so before 1980. - African-American happiness: Quote by Steven Pinker who is a fan of Friedman said: “African Americans are happier than they’ve ever been:” Since the 1980s incarceration rates for black men and women has skyrocketed. African-American women's incarceration rates increased by 828%. Since 2001 the likelihood of a Black men spending time behind bars in their lifetime was 1 in 3, while it was 1 in 17 for all U.S. men. - Today, infants born to black mothers die at twice the rate as those born to white mothers. This horrific disparity cannot be fully explained by differences in income, education, or even health care; evidence suggests that cumulative stress from generations of structural racism is driving this epidemic. To combat this persistent problem, lawmakers must attack structural racism in all its forms-including mass incarceration. - U.S. Incarceration rates: In 1973, after 50 years of stability, the rate of incarceration in the United States began a sustained period of growth. In 1972, 161 U.S. residents were incarcerated in prisons and jails per 100,000 population; by 2007, that rate had more than quintupled to a peak of 767 per 100,000. From its high point in 2009 and 2010, the population of state and federal prisoners declined slightly in 2011 and 2012. Still, the incarceration rate, including those in jail, was 707 per 100,000 in 2012, more than four times the rate in 1972. In absolute numbers, the prison and jail population had grown to 2.23 million people, yielding a rate of incarceration that was by far the highest in the world. Not so before 1980 - The US also stands out as one of the only countries in the world where maternal mortality has increased, rather than decreasing, over the past 15 years. Not so before 1980. - Mass shootings. There were more mass shootings across the U.S. in 2019 than there were days in this year. Mass shootings of skyrocketed since 1980. Not so before 1980. For decades, the toll of mass shootings has risen steadily. During the 1970s, mass shootings claimed an average of 5.7 lives per year. In the 1980s, the average rose to 14. In the 1990s it reached 21; in the 2000s, 23.5. This decade has seen a far sharper rise. Today, the average is 51 deaths per year. If you look at mass shootings over time, two things are alarmingly clear: The attacks are becoming far more frequent, and they are getting deadlier. - Suicide. By the numbers: An alarming rise in suicide. Suicide rates in the United States have increased substantially over the past two decades. From 1999 through 2018, the suicide rate increased 35%, from 10.5 per 100,000 to 14.2. From 1999 through 2018, the suicide rate increased 35%, from 10.5 per 100,000 to 14.2. * The U.S. is the ONLY country in without a national paid parental leave benefit. The average is over 12 weeks of paid leave anywhere other than Europe and over 20 weeks in Europe. Zero industrialized nations are without a mandatory option for new parents to take parental leave. That is, except for the United States.

The reason the Philippines are in the state there are economically, is precisely because of policies like Milton Friedman’s. My post: Anyone up for a challenge? How many people die or go bankrupt in France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Finland etc. etc, ZERO. The difference between Friedman and Obama's economic advisor Jonathan Gruber is like night and day. Friedman is a philosopher and an economist. Gruber is an opportunist with no moral scruples whatsoever and reflects the same values of those who hired him. No wonder the U.S. is in such a mess. The majority of the U.S. electorate have totally abandoned the timeless wisdom that Friedman exudes.

It was what first introduced me to this stuff and turned me away from socialism.

P.S. It's amazing that about a week ago, I was batting the idea of inheritance tax around in my brain, and finally came to the conclusion that it would negatively affect the incredible, transcendental motivation of people to move and shake this world at the thought of improving the state of their children and family. That is the most powerful motivating factor on this earth, I believe. If you remove the incentive for achievement, who knows what won't be achieved? Then I discover this Friedman character today and he puts forth the same argument. Seems like a natural fact. Do leftists not have these thoughts? Or do they ignore every idea that supports a free market capitalist economy?

It's the same thing in Croatia. I've heard of Mr. Friedman 2 years ago in my macroeconomy class and than started getting deeper into his theories. Truly a fascinating man, his work should be presented in the media more often! His thoughts about freedom and capitalism are especially relevant for my country because we had a communist regime untill the 90s. So I can compare his views about it with my dad's and grandfather's who experienced communism and lack of freedom on their own skin. Cheers!

Lectures given decades ago. With wit and humor. Learning economic theory that still applies today. Theory explained easily. From a man born over 100 years ago. Don’t buy into Friedman’s nonsenses, he is a slick talker and that’s it. You should be thankful that you’re living a progressive country. Your murder rate is at .08% while the US is around 9% per 100,000 people. The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world while progressive Norway just shut down 27 prisons. Look what Friedman did to America, the UK and the Chilean miracle which turned out to be a nightmare. My advice is whenever you listen to an economists make sure if they are progressive demand side or conservative supply economists. Friedman was a Supply side economist, which has been debunked over and over again. In 1980, Margaret Thatcher, and Ronald Reagan, with the advice of Milton, Friedman, started Neoliberalism/Supply side economics/anti-government philosophy, by destroying unions, deregulation of the financial system, which led to the global 2008 financial crash with the removal of The Glass-Steagall Act which made it illegal for commercial and investment banks to merge. From 1930 till 2008 there were no major bank crisis due to this regulation which Milton Friedman considered evil big government bureaucracy that held back the Free Market. Ever since 1980 wages have been stagnant for the poor and middle class and the US is now one of the most highly unequal countries in the world. It’s funny that from 1930 till 1980 when President FDR started the progressive left, leaning political, economic philosophy of the New Deal, it produced the greatest growth in the middle-class in all of American history and maybe around the world, but that ended around 1980. For the first time in American history, wages were no longer going up with productivity. That’s what you get with Milton Friedman. Iraq is another good example of Friedman‘s failed free market philosophy/anti-government for the people by the people economic philosophy. Donald Rumsfeld of the Bush administration was a big fan of Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand and he dismantled government in in Iraq and it turned out to be a nightmare. When he was asked about this he said “well freedom can be messy sometimes.” You can look at countries and states like laboratories. Republican states in the US are primarily focusing on Friedmans policies and all of the Republican states are disasters when it comes to poverty, inequality, murder rates, crime in general, incarceration, addiction, suicide, income, life, healthcare, disease, life expectancy, mental illness, etc. Michael Pantazis.

What is depressing is that we did not pay attention to MF back in 1970 but have thundered down the road to more government in the past 45 years.

This is how it used to be in the United States. People would ask polite and civil questions and debate ideas. Today people attack each other in the most uncivil way when they disagree as do issues. Hear a number of people clearly disagreed with Milton Friedman. But they had the right to ask the question. And Milton Friedman was given the opportunity to answer the question.

Incredible talk. Other countries have had a disadvantage for not adequately cherishing this line of thinking. Of free markets, limited government and individual liberty.

P.S. The part of this being a family centered society really resonated with me. I couldn't agree more with him. It feels like American society has lost so many important things recently. I'm reminded of how they took for granted families would be a strong focus going into the future, seeing as how families built the country in the first place. Makes me envious of the past generations, I too feel that its far more important to work hard and do right by your family. It's easy, and unfulfilling to work hard just to throw all your wealth away on meaningless consumerism and the quick but empty fun things of today. I feel a deep moral obligation to my children, to save and prepare them for the future, but to do that, I need to sacrifice and ensure they have something left to start with.

I feel quite the same way. That moment when he mentioned that we're really a family society, not an individual society, was a big moment for me in coming around to his point-of-view. I don't even have a child conceived yet, but I still feel like I have a responsibility to them and their future. I'm happy to say my girlfriend feels the same way! The only real negative I occasionally see are situations where parents have worked and toiled and created a situation where they and their children have a large amount of wealth (like through owning and running a business), and the child, even as he gets older, tends to take that for granted, and does not respect the accomplishments or hard work of the parent before. I don't really blame free markets or family-oriented society for that, but it is something of a negative I've noticed.

Milton Friedman is hands down the greatest debater I've ever seen. I've found myself thinking that in many arguments. Once I was arguing w/ a professor who thought the US is rich at the expense of the third world. He brought up Nike sweatshops. I said people would only work there if they're better off. He said they have no choice, either they work there or starve. Aha, if he had his way and the sweatshops didn't exist, the people would starve. I was on his side, but he wasn't.

P.S. The most important thing I've learned from this man is the difference between persuasion and coercion. My entire life I always thought they were one and the same... no idea why. But he makes that distinction so often and when you realize why its really liberating. The roots of persuasion seem to be purely logical. No force necessary... just words. While the roots of coercion seem to be purely emotional... always with a raised tone (or some other emotional "anomaly") in the voice. The problem is, I don't think most American's understand this anymore as I don't consider myself a dumb person but I somehow lost resolution between those 2 very important, very different words.

The reason we the people never learn is because Freedom and Liberty is not a natural state of mankind. Throughout history man has live under coercion and oppression. Like all animals, it prefers a system where one person or a small group has absolute power to control the whole tribe. It is only by enlightenment and knowledge that man has free himself of this animalistic structure of society. We live in a rare time that we still have some freedoms left. But in due time, we will lose that freedom. It's hard to fight against nature.

When a democrat/liberal promotes conservative policies (like Bill Clinton) he or she is not liberal. Michael Pantazis

It is time for America to challenge all of its people-black, red, and white-to assimilate to the enlightened principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, educate themselves about the nation, study useful trades, be productive citizens, and build a safe and prosperous America. No quotas, no preferences! No welfare, just jobs! Equal pay for equal work! No excuses!

I know right. Friedman would have been an awesome president. With his knowledge and experience on government and the economy.

Word. Today's intellectuals do not engage in such enlightening debate with people holding different views, but rather surround themselves with like-minded people in echo chambers.

That’s funny, the first question is the exact question I had when I learned about Friedman’s view of open boarders. How would it work with NIT? It’s neat the guy knew about so many of Milton Friedman’s views and potential programs. I wonder if he’s still around today, probably in his late 40s, it’d be nice for more people to be aware of negative income tax.

what a gentler and more polite time; people with different view points speaking reasonably...although even all those decades ago you can already see the NPC meme beginning; many students were open to what he was saying but others you could already see their brains saying "run time error does not compute".

Here in Germany nobody but economy students know him - every B-Movie is dubbed but "Free to choose". I had to get 40 to see this on the internet and even recognize that there is a mindset like this.

today, Debeers only has about a 65% market share, but in Milton's day it was maintained largely by brilliant marketing. It effectively programed people have a high perceived value toward diamonds. Their engagement ring campaign has paid off in spades, before that there was no set tradition of a diamond engagement ring.
