We take a look at the Milwaukee M12 Brushless orbital detail sander after six months of use in the field. This is a cordless sander and is one of the best priced detail sanders on the market, but is it worth the $149 price tag?

It's not random orbital. It's just orbital. If it were random orbital then it would be a dual-action system, which it is not.

I've got a radical idea for you. Why not try the sander on its intended use? Why does every review for this tool feature flat sanding of a detail free surface? A pointless waste of my time.

You want to use an interface pad with mesh abrasives as the hooks from the hook and loop poke through the mesh and wear down; its kind of surprising that milwaukee didn't figure that out before they sold this guy, as the issue has been known since mesh pads for random orbitals came out and lots of people burned through $35-60 sander parts. Cheaper to replace the interface pad than the pad on the machine when they wear down (or your wife melts it).

Exactly, we got the product the day it was available so it was the first wave, they released this sander too quick.

Does it work well with metal ?

I don’t deal with metal all that much but I don’t think this would be ideal for that.

That's not a protective pad for the tool. That's so you can sand rounded edges evenly. Sorry, but yes if you use your sander with the paper worn through it will melt with pressure

First, thank you for watching! I will acknowledge that I misspoke in the beginning of the video, but who is perfect? However, we are talking about two separate things here. You are referencing the foam pad that now comes with the sander. When I purchased the sander that item wasn't even created yet (drawback of early adoption). The pad referenced in this video is what comes with every single pack of sanding paper. My Milwaukee rep told me that they did this as they discovered that the sanding pad reached higher temperatures than anticipated which caused the hook and loop system to be ruined, which it does. The pad can get up to 150 with just the trigger locked and not contacting anything. The foam pad, which is similar to the SurfPrep model, is for finishing work but also holds some protective properties. The pad we reference is now known as the "pad saver" but its essentially an "interface" as it is between two things, by definition. So essentially we are both right. But beware of mesh sand paper as it can get extremely warm, we have fell victim to the Xtract system many times and we are professionals. Stay well friend!
