The 50cc turbo project by Twostroke.se and BoostBusters is out on the road!
For the testdrive we used a turbocharged AM6 76cc cylinder in a TZR125 frame. Also includes walkaround of the bike with Lennarth from BoostBusters. Setup for the test is a Malossi 76cc cylinder with 40kPa boost from a K03 turbo...

Absolutelly nice work, guys!!! I am planing a project to install direct injection on Minarelli am6. I never thought turbos could work so perfectly on twostrokes too, I was kinda worried bout the flow in the exhaust, but you seem to have managed that.

for all the geniuses saying this and that, put the turbo closer to the carb ect... you think these guys haven't been there done that?? reason the turbo has to go where the silencer normally is plaved is due to pressure to run the turbo.. any closer and not enough pressure
@Joefabricator
@Joefabricator 8 лет назад
actually I think it is to avoid messing up the compression wave that is reflected from the stinger end of the pipe back to the combustion chamber, compressing the charge in the cylinder further right as the port closes. The pipe is sort of like a no moving parts turbo itself. Anything in between would destroy/block the wave propagation, rob the engine of power, and likely build up a lot of excess heat.
@therealmrcheese

+Joey Hollifield hi mate, don't fully understand what you mean... when the exhaust gases leave the piston they don't come back towards the engine.. maybe a tiny amount as the piston goes bk down but it would be hardly notable.
@Joefabricator
@Joefabricator 8 лет назад
There is a pressure wave that comes from the exhaust port, it travels are the speed of sound (since that's basically what it is) the wave is reflected off the stinger end, the wave compressing the gas molecules in its path. When in the right rpm range it will make it back to the port right before it closes, stuffing fuel and air mix that was pulled past the cylinder into the pipe back into the cylinder, increasing the pressure. It's a turbocharger basically that is powered by the sound of the engine (the waves), and some interesting has dynamics too. As simple as a two stroke engine appears to be, they are extremely complicated in their operation. Read up on two stroke theory a little. You might get hooked, they are a thousand times more interesting than your boring old four strokes.
@Joefabricator
@Joefabricator 8 лет назад
That is what those crazy looking two stroke pipes are all about. They are carefully designed to take advantage of this phenomena, and tuned to the rpm range where power is needed most for the application. When tuned right, it feels like you suddenly doubled horsepower (because you did) when in the right rpm range for the pipe

+Joey Hollifield I actually own a 1996 tzr 125 2 stroke.. was my very first bike so can't bear to sell it! lol plus the ol gal is stil good fun once a month!! yea I did realise about the sound wave ect in the exhaust, that's why it's a art making them! but I honestly didn't know gases went bk into the cylinder.. does it ignite with the fresh gas coming in?

Imho, I think you need a smaller turbo, placed closer to the exhaust port; with the current setup the turbo lag is too big.
@Joefabricator
@Joefabricator 8 лет назад
it won't work, I mean it might work but you'd definitely lose assloads of power if you block the open tuned pipe anywhere between the exhaust port and the stinger. This is a two-stroke, gas dynamics, and compression/rarefaction waves make the engine run, and anything in their way is going to be detrimental, I don't care how much turbo you got.

Turbo is way to far away from the outtake. The thermal energy went down through heat losses is the pipe. You should put it as near as possible for taking the max. energy out of the exhaust gas.
@Joefabricator
@Joefabricator 8 лет назад
anywhere but where it is would destroy not only the gas dynamics, but the wave dynamics that make the engine run. That exhaust pipe is way more important than any turbo, the engine can run without the turbo, after all. Not gonna run without gas dynamics.

People don't seem to know the importance of an resonating chamber on 2 stroke engine exhausts. To everyone saying "Put the turbo closer to the exhaust port/before the resonating chamber", I suggest trying to take the exhaust off on your 2 stroke bike and go for a ride. Then they'll hopefully understand.
@heinzhaupthaar5590
@heinzhaupthaar5590 3 года назад
@@Joefabricator Many people seem to confuse the pressure wave with actual gas flow. You can have your resonance chamber as a dead end, no problem there. The pressure wave will still propagate through it and do its usual thing, but the actual gas flow can be diverted quite early. I'm not sure how much that would actually benefit a turbo application, it's usually done for packing reasons, but in theory it almost has to be quite beneficial. Especially regarding the rather large surface area of a tuned exhaust.
