Mind Blowing on30 Scale Layout “Purgartory Peak” with Denver and Rio Grande Model Trains 「鉄道模型」

Purgatory Peak is an on30 scale layout which was built by the members of the Macclesfield Model Railway Group, Great Britain. Currently Purgatory Peak is the only club layout that is being exhibited. It is a first attempt at American on30 gauge layouts by British steam enthusiasts. Although there are perfectly weathered locomotives, trains and landscapes of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, the model railway layout is purely fictitious.
When gold, silver and other heavy metals had been discovered, the newly emerging economy of the United States was screaming out for these resources. But pack horses, mule trains and back packs were simply not up to the ever growing demands. Something needed to be done. So a railroad was to build from Denver to the furthest reaches of western Colorado and on to Utah, thus linking the two most important emerging trading centers in the area. And so the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was born.
The railroads around Purgatory Peak were conceived in the euphoria of the mining boom of the late 19th century. Purgatory Peak was selected for the area to model, neither for its scenic beauty nor for its significance as a milestone in railway history. It was simply chosen because getting to this point, not only on the original railway, but also on the model, had been sheer, bloody purgatory.
So we are in a mining area where heavily loaded freight trains transport mineral resources every minute. The layout depicts narrow gauge main lines and branch lines serving two mines. It is 8.3 mtr or 27 ft long. On the main line trains up to 24 wagons long are pulled by K series locomotives. At least three model trains are in operation at all times - always something moving! Furthermore, the layout is fully scenic along the whole layout length. Behind the scene, the narrow gauge main lines are supported by an 8-road fiddle yard.

Awesome scenery, structures, bridges and trestles ! Fine rolling stock too. A little weathering would certainly enhance the realism ! Great work indeed.

Great music enhances a great model railroad! Tank cars are awesome and the animation and sounds, how exciting! I am on the edge of my seat! My great grandfathers were surveying engineers who worked during these times in their Link river logging camp near Klamath falls Oregon until 1915! The Great northern railway was buying land from my grandfathers.

OMG! This reminds me of many of the ghost-towns and out-of-the-way small towns in Colorado, and the California Sierras that I used to explore in the 1980s, before so many of them were torn-down, or closed-off to the public by the government (which I can pretty much understand given how dangerous many of these places were, with open mine shafts that dropped who knows how far down into the depths of the mountains). But the same kind of other-worldly scenic beauty existed, as if you had left the modern world, and stepped back in time to the 1800s.

Beautiful tribute to Colorado narrow gauge railroading. Superb locomotives - especially the weathered 2-6-6-2. The only thing missing to be a true representation of western Colorado mining would be a Galloping Goose. The Bachmann Railtruck would be a nice addition.

Some very interesting scenes there. Nicely done steep grades. Cool to see those Shays move on this layout. Funny though that Purgatory Peak is surpassed by yet another track higher up in the background.

I'd reverse the suggestion below; END your videos with an overview of the layout. Dropping right into a scene gives it a very prototypical feel, like the viewer is a trainwatcher on your layout. But at the end, you can show off the whole thing to give the audience an idea of the scope of your work, and how the different scenes interlace with one another.

I would love it if we could also see the wide shots to see how the layout was put together so we can compare layouts as we seek ideas for our own 🚂 layouts.

Great layout and good enough video. I have one suggestion to this modeler and others to follow. When using a narrow gauge idea, if it meets the main train line, that main train has to be a full size train. It will big the reality of what you are trying to portray with your mining narrow gauge railroad. As for this video I did not see any full size O gauge train on it, but 2 main lines that it meets, as mentioned in the text..

I've always wondered, how do you manage to keep narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock so stable? As in it isn't rocking or jittering... Even my most expensive stuff (including track and ballast) isn't this stable, and it's all standard gauge. The only exception is my 3-truck Climax, it's always as smooth as glass, but everything else jitters a little and/or rocks.

:40 one thing has always intrigued me, is why are the houses and businesses perched on such ridiculous precipices, propped up with timber supports. Didn't anyone build on good flat land?? Or is it just theatrical. A good display.

Very nice. Love that Shay. Are ya using ON30 track or OO or HO gauge track with every other tie removed? A very nice wooden trestle bridge. Bet that took some time to build. Looks like yer using Matchbox Models of Yesteryear. I use them on my 027 Lionel layout. 2Need to weather some of that rolling stock--too new and pristine looking. The compound 2-6-6-2 is weathered very nicely. The 2 truck shay is nicely weathered too. Love the working handcar too.

2:48 is this bridge based on a prototype. No diagonal bracing on the side of the bents is why I ask. I see how this could be how real bridge may have been built.

Amazing layout. Kudos to everyone involved. I have a question, out of ignorance and no disrespect at all. A great deal of time and effort is spent aging and weathering and it all looks great, but the cars and engine look like they just came from the factory. Not just your layout but all others I have seen. Why are the engines and cars not weathered too?

At public exhibitions, I cannot show a general view, because there are always people in the video. I cannot film people without asking them; I have to respect their data protection rights.
