In this episode, Tom and Emma speak with one of education’s most influential authors, Doug Lemov. In addition to his best-known work, Teach Like a Champion, Doug has recently authored Teaching in the Online Classroom - Surviving and Thriving in the New Normal, an essential guide for educators navigating the Covid-19 pandemic. He has also recently authored The Coach’s Guide to Teaching, published by John Catt Educational.
In the interview, Doug’s passion for creating a supportive, challenging and enriching educational environment for all students shines through. He talks about the importance of having high expectations for all learners, and also discusses the significance of creating connections. The discussion touches on strategies that work in all environments, and specifically refers to the online teaching and learning so many schools are currently experiencing. The conversation also challenges thinking on “outside the box” vs. “inside the box” ideas (hint: inside the box comments are often more valuable to productive collaboration), surfaces strategies for developing listening behaviors, and more.

I'm so glad that TLAC 3.0 integrates LT and working memory, and especially connects to cognitive load. I've been trying to bring these elements into out CPD, but having it already there will make the PD so much more cohesive than I could do myself.

Mr Lemov has helped teachers significantly- myself included. But his characterization of public schools being in "a shambles" is either biased or misinformed. I could go on and on about the lack of accuracy of that characterization if one investigates all public schools- not the worst cases. I've worked in economically diverse public schools and see amazing things all the time. Is he working for charters or private schools? That's the only thing that makes sense. Charters and privates do not have anywhere near the size of ESE, ELL, or economically disadvantaged students that public schools have. Public school teachers are, generally, more credentialed. Though, I understand that public schools are NOT IMPROVING and getting worse. BUT segregating education through charters and privates is extremely harmful to building a better society. So if one cares about all children equally, the answer is disentangling for profit companies and one-size-fits-all exams for school grades. And the most important thing would be developing a society that has an equitable economy for all[yea, that's redundant].
