Mind Your Manners (1953) 

I think the real challenge is learning how to deal with rude people, which they don't really show in this film. It's easy enough to be polite when everyone else is too, but that's not always the case. :/

No one on the phone, talking loud, being obnoxious, and everyone is well dressed. Rare to see these days.

Believe it or not, but I have brought up my 12 yr old just like this...Why? because I was brought up exactly like this....His manners are beautiful and well polished....When he answers 'yes, sir' or 'yes, ma'am', you should hear the adult...When he holds a door open for either a man or woman, they do everything but kiss him. If MORE parents did this....Well, I do not have to describe it for you.....You know!!!

I love good manners, and love it when people have good manners!

I liked how the students waited for the bell to ring BEFORE packing up their books as well as waiting for the dismissal from the instructor prior to standing up and leaving. Now middle school, high school, even in colleges, they disrespect the teachers and the their time by snapping books and laptops shut, and the zippers sounding on all of bags 5-10 to minutes before class is over!

I think these videos should be run on all stations for 1hr everyday for next 5years. Period

It's a shame that today politeness is just not practiced as it should. I view it as entitlement mentality. People feel they are owed something whether they have earned it or not. Just being nice to someone has its own reward, and it doesn't require any effort on your part.

Manners are to society what balancing components is to tuning an engine. I love these films and want to live in the world they paint.

The music at the beginning of this video is the original theme from the show "What's My Line?". Not an earth-shattering revelation, but I thought it was a fun bit of trivia.

My Mom use to have a Day Care and I can say; Not many. Some of the kids we're as old as 13 and had never sat at a table to eat, and so, they didn't know what table manners we're. The parents just didn't teach them anything! So we had to teach Table manners, sharing, hygiene... everything. I remember one kid, who was 10, who use to think it was OK to pee anywhere in the yard even with people watching. Safe to say, he learned some manners later on from us. His parents we're quite embarrassed!

This was very nice. How the person acts reflect on the parents.

I can hear the clatter of the old projector... it was such a break when the teacher had us pull the blinds down and turn out the lights, we really didn't care what topics they subjected us to!

I work in schools and can confirm that most kids today are not raised to be polite. Parents need to teach their offspring to yield to an adult when they're trying to go by. Instead, they walk around you, behind you, and nearly run you over. They don't know any better. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

They were talking about Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in class and she still is Queen today!!

I agree with you. I watch these videos and I'm sad that it isn't like that anymore. We are not as innocent as they were back then...maybe innocent isn't the right word but it seemed more wholesome, more kind and considerate than it is today. People seemed to care more bout others and themselves and seemed happier.

I agree. I remember the teacher rolling in the projector and showing these sort of films! That was around 1988-1993! I doubt they do it now though.

That's what happened in the world today- we STOPPED teaching manners. They used to teach etiquette and manners in school- but no more. I actually was taken aback by him holding the chair for his mother!! How resfreshing to see how they used to do it. I think we should bring these back into schools. Couldn't hurt anything right? Although with no "F" bombs or violence our kids wouldn't know what to think about this.

If only people learned that it is okay to be polite. You don't have to bend over backwards to please people but, a simple "excuse me" or a "please" or a "thank you" show people that you care enough to be respectful. There is nothing wrong with being kind, it takes nothing away from you.

May be this vid should be shown at schools and on home tv! There are very few people practising good manners these days! I say Yeay! To good manners! Any guy can hold the door open for me any time even if I ride a 900cc motorbike! I love good manners!

I would definitely say more innocent to the larger world around them. People didn't move around as much, certainly didn't have as much communication with different kinds of people, were much more isolated. However, in practical everyday ways, they were also more independent. My grandparents all were able to sew or at least fix their own clothes, many of their own appliances, cars, things around the house. They built more things, grew more food in the garden, etc. Definitely a different world.

Wow this is amazing. Can you even imagine if high schoolers (or most adults) acted this way? What a stark contrast to today. Why don't they teach this stuff in schools? Maybe less people would act like selfish brute beasts...

JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU......manners have advantages. When I was in high school back in that seedy hippy era I had a friend who was so polite he made Eddie Haskel look rude. He was robbing houses, stealing cars and doing a lot of dope......but.....he got away with it because everyone thought he was just so polite and wonderful. When every one else had long hair and bell bottoms he was dressed in a checked shirt buttoned up to his neck and had a crew cut. It was just insane what he got away with

Respecting your elders and treating people in a respectful way doesn't go aginst speaking out and what not. Actually we can see something like respecting your elders in animal life, showing its sorta an instinct, same with treating each other right. Its just one of those things that furthers the species and what not. Don't ever let someone convince you that its rude or disrespectful to speak out against authority, its a trick to stop dissent, but you've gotta remember there is a time and place

im seriously like ur old fashioned 1940-1950s girl when it comes to manners and stuff like this. I wanna raise my children like this. Manners matter, Im also think ill be like the old 1940-1950s wife. I feel that my soul responsibility is to raise my husband and children.

@VASINGER I'm basing this on my own experience, that most nations, including English, Irish, Polish and other act compeletely different outside their own countries. More then often I myself suffer from bad attitude only because some folks in a country i'm visiting at that time already met immigrants or visitors from Poland before. And I believe that might be the problem in your case. I hope you'll understand what I am trying to say, even though English is not my first language.

In fact, more kinds of people listen to what you have to say if you act gracefully. Unless it's all just emotion you're expressing, then maybe manners don't matter, but that's a different kind of expression; to communicate real ideas and thought, manners help a lot. (Like your response here.)

I plan to force my cousins into watching this next time they come over and want to use my computer. I'll have a quiz afterwards that they'll have to pass. Nothing's ever happy for them if it doesn't go exactly their way... their lack of "manners" makes them real wet blankets. Also, really annoying, especially since they're old enough to know how to act around people. Should be fun to see them suffer through this.
