Echo Shards and Deep Dark has been added in 1.19, Element X says, Echo Shards are found in Ancient Cities.

8 echo shards and a compass are used to make a Recovery Compass. First, use a crafting table, put the compass in the middle, then put the echo shard all around it will craft a Recovery Compass, the Recovery Compass will point to the place where you last died for you to go there to get your loot back but it is useless in hardcore

With the Echo Shard you can craft a recovery compass which is always pointing to the direction where your last death was.

Echo shards literally only have 1 purpose. To make the recovery compass. This special compass points to the spot where you last died. Meaning echo shards have no use in hardcore.
