Turns out Mojang also gave out a couple limited edition Minecraft-themed phones as well as running a charity auction for one of them. It’s interesting how hard they were pushing this nifty device at the time and I wish it stuck around
I own one and wish it got a "sequel" at least. Sure there are android gaming handhelds now, but imagine a smartphone in this form factor running ps2 and gamecube. Would be absolute insanity. To the xperia's credit its still really solid for snes, gameboy/gba, ps1 and even DS. Only reason I stopped using mine was because a modded new 3ds does all that too. But even 10+ years after it launched this thing was still my daily carry
@tldmimikyu5779 hell no lmao it couldn't even run n64 or psp, running switch on an android this old is completely impossible. My current phone runs switch (galaxy z fold 4) and even this sometimes struggles with it. Absolutely no way the Xperia could do the same.
@@RandomizationShow have you seen the slide out controllers that you can 3d print for smart phones? I have a switch like controller attachment for my s23 ultra and the phone can run emulators so well. From the leaks of the sequel phone, it looked really nice! I am surprised no company has made one since.
Where I live back when I was 16 in 2011 people that played Minecraft were made fun of because only kids played it most people played Halo and Call Of Duty
I was in elementary school probably around grade 3-4 and my friend had one, I just remember how cool it was to have a phone/psp in one, I had the psp at the time but just to think that it could also work as a cellular device just absolutely amazed me 😂🙌🏻 props to Justin for showing me the PS-Phone
0.8.1 alpha was also the very 1st version of pocket edition I've ever played, back in 2014, as it was the most advanced version released to phones other than the Sony Xperia phone at the time, I was 12
@@KP_Uravity I am not quite old enough you have to be 13+ i am 12 2/3 but I am just as mature and I apologize for my outburst it's just the minecraft version I play
This was probably one of the last truly creative phone designs until the present day (foldables, e-ink, other novel implementations). It's such a shame Apple basically SLAPPed the phone market into making boring rectangles.
It’s the impressive nature of doing the MOST with the limited tech you had. Like the ps1 couldn’t do z buffering instead they developed a thing called “affline texture wrapping” to mimick z axis perception which is infinitely more interesting
@@andy_doguh no lol only the top Samsungs have decent battery life. Anything Samsung from Walmart or dollar general and you are gonna have a bad time 😂
@@kennypowers1945I think the cheapo Samsung's actually will have a longer battery life because they have weaker processors that use less power. I had a low end mediatek based phone that has the best battery life ever. My Galaxy S10 with a pretty good battery health sucks in comparison. 😅
Man minecraft pocket edition was so fun. I remember getting into it like 2011 or 2012, every little update i got so excited for. Like when i first started zombies were only enemy, then the spider/skeleton/creeper update hit, that was hype. The bed update, chest update, armor update! I loved it. Mcpe actually is why i first got into twitter, i wanted to follow the developer of the game to get news of updates, Ah those were the days.
Yea I remembered that too And this reactor, name of which I've completely forgotten, you basically bulld a box out of gold and silver block and put one block of reactor inside Then you get a tall building spawned, made out of nether blocks with pigmen inside
@@hckr_a yes, the tall enclosed building that randomly shot quarts and cactus out of the ground before turning into this morbid abomination full of holes that stayed in your world forever. good times.
Minecraft pocket edition was so fun back in 2012. Couldn’t pay me to play it today though even with nostalgia. The Minecraft for phones today is pretty much just the PC version.
This version was actually the first mobile version of the game. The general Android version came out a couple of months later, and iOS a month after that
@@BahhBahhBrownSheepwrong. "The first way to play the Android version of Minecraft" could imply a release order of IOS- Xperia Play- Android instead of Xperia Play- Android- IOS.
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep First Android is not First Mobile. If you read the comment it says first mobile not first Android version. First Android still leaves the possibility of iOS being first
@@fedorboendermaker1536 This thing beats any modern phone in portability. I love mine and use it to this day as a portable emulation device. You can barley tell its in your pocket. Wish Sony would make a more modern version for gamecube and ps2, let alone psplay
Bro only if that update was supported on the xperia play 0.9.0 is broken on it which is a shame considering its the update with infinite worlds no longer being 256x256😭
Dude you literally hit a core memory for me. My dad used to have this and then gave it to me when I was like in elementary/middle school. I have so many memories on it from playing video games to watching Inuyasha illegally on RU-vid in 4 different videos. Thanks for the flashback memory and now I know the name of the phone.
I remember watching anime on RU-vid like that. You just hoped all the parts were there. Nothing worse than not being able to find part 3 of the episode you've been watching in 7 minute chunks
@ripbraylen6913 Yep! And other apps too like Kik, Instagram, and Skype. Those were the main ways I messaged friends. Unsure about Facebook/Facebook messenger. I was in middle school (22 now) then so I barely remember what other apps.
I remember bringing this phone to school, playing MinecraftPE and a whole bunch of emulators and old school Gameloft titles. It was so fun showing it off to friends. It's too bad we haven't seen another phone like this in a long time.
I miss this phone so much unfortunately mine had connectivity issues weeks after buying it. Did play Minecraft on it though, just wish sony would make an updated model for today, same slide mechanic for buttons and joysticks would be amazing for a modern gaming phone
@@schizvoid8774 Your correction would turn their comment into a comma splice, which is just another kind of run-on sentence, and is therefore equally bad. The right correction would be: "I had no idea Pocket Edition has been out that long. Time flies."
Cant believe I had this thing as a kid. I made so many things in my 256x256 worlds. I wish they made more phones like this. This was also an N64 emulation beast, and also played Vice City and GTA 3 really well. We really need another one with modern hardware.
I had this, and it was really cool! My favorite things to do at the time were build treehouses, and dig an underground maze/tunnel from one point to another on the surface. The coolest was one I started in a little hole at the west side world border (which was very close in the version I played) and came out like 50 blocks to the north east and 20 or so blocks up, right at a cool little stone platform that had naturally formed on the side of a large hill. It was lots of fun, and it did feel very smooth!
I had an Xperia Play as a kid. I remember it running Android Gingerbread with 512mb of RAM mated to a Snapdragon processor (I forgot which version). I played Minecraft, an earlier version of Asphalt, that one Hyundai racing game and Avatar. I can tell you right now that it was the best phone I've ever had. It also turns heads back when I was in school. Also, the songs that come with it like "Static Space" were great to listen to. Only downside was the camera; you can't zoom in or out without using a third-party camera app.
wow memory lane for me!! i love love loved that phone!!! mine was the blue color then i lost the back cover and bought a black replacement then my sisters phone broke and i gave her my experia play and she fell in love with the camera ❤❤❤❤ 😊😊😊
Minecraft PE is the ULTIMATE minecraft nostalgia... I remmeber when they released survival 🥲 i was so excited. And when they released furnaces! Life changing lmao, good times
I had this phone at the time it came out. The phone was an awesome idea, but they used incredibly low end specs for the time. It struggled to run RU-vid, and was just incredibly frustrating to use for most daily tasks. It was pretty good for emulating PS1 and earlier games though. There were some cool exclusives that ran really well too. Minecraft ran pretty well and the Dead Space mobile game was great and played amazingly on the digital analog sticks.

This phone was ahead of its time. Imagine Sony makes this kind of phone today and competing with the kinds of Anbernic, Retroid and Ayn, instead of making Playstation Portal.
I don’t think most of you will know what it was like playing pocket edition from 11-16! Those were the days and we even had our own little corner of RU-vid that was just beautiful 🥲
It was! I was friends with a kid who had one back in elementary school and he showed anyone and everyone it running Minecraft. He did some wild stuff on it
one of the most innovative moves by Sony back then i was eager to get this unit before but since i was still a student and have limited resources i never got this one. imagine having portable game console + phone
Amazing to see how far Minecraft has come since then. Still remember when I first played it on my iPod. I had a world seed with no water. Surviving was so hard. And the world size was so small. Still have no regrets buying Minecraft. It was 100% worth it. And for anyone that thinks it’s a dead game. Just go to the shops. All the toys clothes and food for Minecraft says it’s never going to die. Just like that Fortnite. They will never die. Just evolve.
I remember seeing the ad for this on the Minecraft website way back, they advertised the pocket edition before it came out with this device. At the time I thought they were making a mini game console specifically for Minecraft
I remember when the fishing rod was useless and you had a limit to dig down and you couldn't switch from survival to creative to get items if you needed something you had to grind to get that item ahhhhh nostalgia 😢
I used to dream about having one of these as a kid, we've come a long way when it comes to handheld gaming. I dreamed of playing my playstation games on it but because of cost i never got to have one. but now i have a steam deck which does everything i ever wanted as a kid
I remember seeing middle schoolers as a 2nd grader in 2012 playing Minecraft on their phones and I’d always try to look at it but they’ll turn they’re phones away 😢😅
I had that phone. The gaming features are honestly so cool for its time. But my GOD after a couple months texting/calling/using the UI on the phone was just so buggy and eventually damn near just bricked at one point. My dad had one as well and literally months down the line the same issues started to happen. I did get it AT launch but it had its cons and pros
This brings up alot of memories, i remember i play minecraft the first time is the ios beta version which is kinda 0.9.0 i think, then i get full version 0.9.5 which is the first time i tried survival mode
A lot less than what I would have expected. Back in 2010 I thought future phones would be something like the Nokia Morph concept, while folding phones do exist they aren't that common. Most phones still look pretty much the same as 2010 phones but just a lot bigger and with much smaller bezels
