Most of these such as calculator and computer dont use any fancy redstone. They are basically just breadboard circuts implemented in minecraft.

Redstone is basically the core of what a real computer does and uses. A bit, a 0 or 1 signal, thats what redstone basically is and since that is the core of every computer and software, you can actually build computers and other technology in minecraft using redstone.

The whole diffiticulty in making wave machine is getting the timing right, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE DOING IT WITH MINECARTS, because if the pistons will activate too late or too soon the block / minecart won't be launched into the air and you will need to remove it manualy one by one, if you are doing the minecarts one you will need to do all the rails again...
