my argument would be that they were taking preorders based on this spin. i will be interested in their response, but i can guess it will be more ass covering. its fairly obvious now that it is not any deeper than most other detectors and minelab will now say its using 50% more processing power. they will be digging themselves in a detecting pit of future retractions and modified statements. The truth is the nox was a balls up quality wise and they didnt put that right but kept selling the same thing and replacing broken and leaking units with the same thing. They are reading this i know... ive bought your machines for over 30 years so im no bozo. you need to get on the straight and narrow and stop throwing metal detectors out of aeroplanes and get a bit of honesty back. there are some great new machines coming out on the market by other manufacturers that are looking after their customers very well. when a manticore goes pop out of warranty it is a disposable unit... its not acceptable at that price and your claims are what is asking that price. i saw an image of inside the headphones recently!!!!!!!! same old china
@@petearnold8020 I'm not sure where you are browsing at on the internet, but I am seeing quite a few Equinox and Deus owners that are using a manticore and saying it hits a lot deeper. There's too much snow on the ground where I am at for me to find out myself
@@freedomdiggersmetaldetecti8964 you cant even buy one here yet in the uk, its preorder. all the youtubers and special people had one first. I have seen many videos that show its no deeper than anything else. Some areas some machines may have the edge, but in general its no deep beast as advertised. Coil size is what gets depth. Or on a beach pulse induction. Ive seen it aaaaallllll before...
I'm with you. reading all the comments trying to explain it away😂 only reason they reached out to Merrill cause they knew he was paying attention to what they said in those pre-release videos😂
I watched it (as apparently many other did). I found it very interesting and “I’m open to any responses from Minelab…” about covered it to allow a response. You got one and we’re all anxious to see your follow up video. Thanks Merrill.
Well done, Merrill. Thankful for you and thankful for Minelab for stepping up and responding to their consumers. We all know they make a great product. We just ask for understanding. All's well that ends well. This is shaping up to be very helpful to our community. Thanks to both parties.
This is fantastic news well done you Thank you minelab for your quick response in clearing these questions up Well done Merril for putting it out there The truth is all you've asked for
Congratulations Merrill You are beyond entertaining You have the metal detector community's attention. Thanks for what you do. I'm looking forward to the next video You Rock
First, a Spaceballs reference is fantastic, even in a rant.😄 Second, it’s great that Minelab reached out to open a dialog and explain. I guess we will see where it leads.
Thank you Merrill for two things. One being "take your audience to work day" and two; asking the right questions to hold Minelab accountable for their claims. Excellent job my friend!!!
Thanks Merle for always keeping an open minded approach to the information you share and the honesty that the majority of RU-vid doesn't always have. I'm glad minelab spoke with you and this is the reason i spend the extra money to used minelab products I've purchased 5 minelabs in the 1 year I've been metal detecting and Gold prospecting. Can't wait to see your video
@jimmyberubelevesque2557 potato pototoe. Mr Correcto man what would we do without you and that damn auto correct that types other names when I do dpeak to text. 😆 my day will be so much better now that you corrected the auto corrector
Yesterday, I had the thought that Minelab would be made aware of your video. Didn't think it would be that fast of a response. Contrast, a couple, that does RU-vid metal detecting videos I seen recently on the same new product. Every thing they own/use had Minelab on it, right down to their paint job on their pickup truck. After watching enough of that video, I offered the comment that they were doing nothing objective proving the difference or value of the new detector, but only an info-mmercial. It was clearly just a sales promotion for Minelab who obviously sponsors them. The couple never replied and I have no interest in watching any further content from them. You have a different audience of followers as you've proven to be trustworthy throughout tons of videos. You seem just like the guy we all go detecting with that we consider a good friend.
I had a discussion with a retired lawyer friend of mine soon after noticing that the video had gone private. We both thought, "uh oh, Minelab contacted him", and it now seems that we were right. In my friend's opinion, he said to me "Imo, if he had added 'IMO' to the start of the title, or a '?' to the end, he probable could have left the thing stay public". And I agree with one of the comments made below where it says... "They said 50 percent more power being put in the ground. If it doesn't then they are liars plain and simple". Let's see how ML spins... uh, I meant to say 'explains' this statement from their rep.
Hi Merrill. It's marvellous to see the reaction you received on your last post. It was like running a stick through an ants nest! I would like to have been listening to your conversation with minelab. I must ask was the dreaded 'civil action' or 'law suit' mentioned! I'm looking forward to their response in the next post. May be minelab have become the 'masters of spin'!
I talked to a few friends about any ways that they could get more power into the ground, but still have the power limit imposed. With most coils the RF is emitted in all directions. With a suitable coil design it should be possible to direct more of the RF in a specific direction, a bit like a search light rather than a light bulb. That way you could have more power going into the ground. The only other thing we could think of, is if the limit is maximum average power, and so shorter, higher power pulses with the same period (frequency) as long lower power pulses could also send more peak power into the ground. Looking forward (out of genuine interest) what the answer is.
Whew!! Minelab could have handled that in a much tougher way - I'm glad they didn't. You're a good guy, Merrill, and I'm glad you got the exposure and are going to be around to clarify and release more videos. Its turning into quite an experience and a good one, eh Buddy?
a much tougher way?!?!?! what?....send some goons after a teacher?!?!? merrill said NOTHING wrong nor untoward in his initial video....INCLUDING the "rant". passion is allowed unless you live in china or russia. he simply expressed his thoughts and opinions which were corroborated by videos of minelab personnel verbally verifying his assumptions from reading THIER nomenclature!! he did not slander them; he was not libelous nor did he defame them in any way. THEY stated the new machines have a bunch more "power" and he simply showed that they DID NOT!!!! as always....well done, teacher
Not exactly, Dave. A "Cease And Desist" letter, a threat of lawsuit for slander/libel, etc. might have been appropriate for Minelab. There are several legal remedies they could have used. Glad they didn't. But your statement that there was no possible slander/libel is not correct.
@@wallywagner673 they didn't because they know they would lose because they DO lie to make sales go up , oh excuse me " deceive " people to make sales go up
I’m glad I saw the original video. I love my Minelab product! I have an equinox 800. I also had a leak problem last summer. I have to say that Minelab Customer Support was excellent! They went above and beyond to help me continue to enjoy my hobby while I waited for repairs. After the great customer service I received, I will always be a Minelab customer. Kudos to Minelab! ❤
Hi Merrill, How about they give some insight on why it takes months from the time they announce the detector to the actual ship date? Seems every “influencer” has one and yet the rest of us are stuck living intrinsically through them. Appears we can find anything with a Manticore but not the Manticore itself. Anyway, great videos and always enjoy watching and learning. Can’t wait for the next episode.
I didn't want to mention that to Merrill, I just cancelled my Manticore order and ordered the 900. The dealer had to look way down the list to find my name, actually I was on the next page. Looks like it might be a long wait fellas.
That is awesome! Looking forward to the new video and the answers from Minelab! I am impressed that they immediately contacted you...Minelab is known for bad communication so this is a step in the right direction. Thank you Merrill!!! Since Minelab contacted you I think that unlocks seomthing! Steak dinner?
I've only done 2 short hunts with the manticore, it's a very nice machine, good ergonomics targetid/trace is helpful. It takes hours to master any machine, there probably will be updates that improve things and, imho no matter what machine you have the best thing you can do to improve your finds is location location location.
I see where some are upset because they are not finding silver. My adivse is same as yours, location location location. I also believe the best place to find old coins is in front and back yards, and for example, the last five people I asked to metal detect their yard, they said yes. Old neighborhoods and old yards equal silver coins.
@@harrysurtees8710 You are so right! I started doing public places like schools & parks. I found enough stuff to get me hooked on this hobby. The last few years I’ve hooked up with a few friends, new friends that metal detect. We have done some private permissions and my new favorite, farms! There’s nothing like a private permission! That’s where all the goodies are!
Merrill.... your personality and no BS videos makes for your great following.... didn't get to see the first video but will definitely look forward to the second one
I'm glad Minelab contacted you, Merrill. I'm sure everything can be sorted out amicably. Truth and responsibility are staples of your channel, and we appreciate that. We appreciate YOU!❤️
I do not have a Minelab yet but from some of the numbers I remember from the equinox on VDI sensitivity, the equinox’s had a 25 as the max setting maybe a bit more on the the 800. Could the increase on the Manticore to 35 be what they are referring to as an increase in power into the ground. Since they do have to follow the FCC on max wattage emitted, could VDI sensitivity which actually calculates to a 40% increase from 25 to 35. Also if I do remember the representative that was being questioned in the Minelab video (don’t know his name) was being questioned on the spot under pressure by a product that was in the final stages of production to be released a month or so later. Either way it is interesting the facts you did point out, I have been wondering where the 50% increase in power to the ground came from since I saw the first video about the manticore the day it was released. Claiming to increase power and 50% is huge. It sort of reminds me of Apple, when they release a new processor like the M1 or M2 and they will say it has a speed of 40% faster than the previous version. I know that is completely different and they are limited as well on the capacity of the battery. I do agree. Marketing is tough, but facts do matter especially when you’re selling machines for a company that is owned by a publicly traded company on the stock exchange. Can’t wait to see the sources and how they justify the claims. I appreciate your videos is always there a wonderful keep it up.
Merrill, I missed myths original video and now I am glad. I would much rather and hear those questions answered by Minelab. But I want to congratulate you on how you are handling it. I think you set a great example to not only the metal detecting community but to your students about knowing when to step back and reassess something. Especially when it leads to opening a dialog that leads to answers.
I love minelab detectors, I have a 900 and a Ctx amongst others and there does seem to be quicker processing on the newer machines and they are better to use but depth is deffo not a great deal more than the minelab gt that I own.
Thank you, Merrill, for your thoroughness on this topic. I love Minelab products and have 2 Nox 800's. Totally interested in the 900 or Manticore but not sure if I should move forward with a new investment or stick with what I have. Standing by for more valuable information. Appreciate your passion in the world of metal detecting.
Hi Merrill, Congrats on the viral video I was able to watch it, when I went back to comment it was gone and figured something was up. I was thinking about the FCC transmission regulation you discussed. Is it possible unregulated countries receive a more powerful version detector? Waiting for your up date video with minelab’s explanation. Great job and keep the great videos.
Awesome Merrill. Kudos to you for initiating a dialogue to remove the veil of “mystery” behind the Truth of Metal Detector performance. There seems to be some “smoke & mirrors” behind many claims in consumer electronic products across the board. Not all companies are open and honest with their loyal customers & consumers of their products. Hopefully this will open a door and initiate a dialogue to open the windows and clear the air and the users will benefit in the long run. Thanks Merrill!
Thanks for this Merrill. I have a manticore in order and was second guessing my purchase. I will stayed tuned for more info. Thanks again and keep up the good work. On a side note .. good thing you didn’t use that other Spaceballs clip “I’m surrounded by a******s!”
I love Minelab and use it all the time, but when they made the claim more powerful it made most folks think it was sending out a more powerful signal to detec with. But thanks to your sharp eye at reading the power output specifications it appears that it is not more powerful in that regard. But more powerful in it's ability to be sensitive to the signal bouncing back the machine coil from the target and or more "Powerful " at being able to discriminate and identify those fainter signals. So in reality I would say they were not lying it really is more powerful. a more powerful device/tool to locate and determine/discriminate/ the deeper signals. I don't think an update would be able to do these changes, it would take an entirely newly engineered machine to give a 100 segmented screen and a 2 D screen and upgraded internal electronics to make it more sensitive to the reflected induction signal. Keep up the good work Merrill, but they could put an internal power switch to let the customer raise the power output and still be legal as it would be sold as a 1 watt detector , the new owner could open it turn up the power kind of like The Galaxy 959 does, sells a legal 4 watt C.B. radio but shows you how to turn it up to a 40 watt radio after you buy it .
I have the minelab equinox 800 and ordered the Manticore. After seeing your video I called up and canceled my Manticore order and ordered the Deus 2 instead. I hope I made the right decision. 🤷♂️
I think the key word that needs to be defined is the word MORE. Does 50% more power refer to a quantity or a volume like this 1.5 volt AA battery lasts for 1 hour. This other 1.5 volt AA battery lasts for 1.5 hours. Does this 2nd battery have 50% more power? If each battery sends the power into the ground, then it is not an untrue statement to say the 2nd battery has 50% more power. The problem is with people assuming that more power means stronger power. If Minelab really means they have a longer lasting battery in the Manticore - which I think they did mention, then the way they are using certain buzz words to market the machine could maybe be made more clear.
I'm glad Minelab responded and called you. What I wonder is: Was it initially a misunderstanding on Minelab's part to talk about "more power". The power used may not be greater, "stronger", b u t the software may have changed in such a way that a better, lower or colloquially "stronger" power/result is obtained: Advantage of a higher power efficiency! The sales department probably also "helped" with the sales documents as the competition, sales pressure is considerable.. 👋
Hi Merrill....I recall a similar discussion a few years back, on one of the detecting forums, regarding output power to the coil...The topic was the Whites electronics TDI PRO pulse detector vs. The Whites TDI-SL model pulse detector....It turns out that Whites "decreased" the voltage of the detector (don't quote me on this) from about 14 volts (TDI PRO) to around 12 volts (TDI-SL).Although the TDI PRO model had a few more inches of depth, the SL model had better stability...Some not satisfied with the loss of depth in the TDI-SL opted to purchase after-market batteries, which "upped" the detectors voltage closer to the TDI-PRO (within the parameters of the detectors electronics)...What I'm getting at is (according to these findings) increased voltage may equal more output power to the coil...so, if the Manticore truly has 50% more power , perhaps they would need to increase the detectors voltage?...Possibly a question to pose to Minelab? Maybe someone out there with more technical knowledge can explain this in more detail? I'm by no means an electrical engineer, but the increased battery voltage, did give more depth, according to the forum.
Wow. Saw the original video, and I wondered if Minelab would respond. You where saying what a lot of us have been wondering, and I truly thank you. All will go well and I look forward to the follow up tomorrow. Ps, was he friendly on the phone? Human nature, had to ask,,,,
Good for you Merrill for sticking to your guns, and great job to Minelab for reaching out. These are good legitimate questions we all have had about marketing claims. Looking forward to the truth.
Well Merelli. I have always valued your opinion and videos like this and the original prove that you are here for the greater good and worth listening to. Carry on the great work.
With their "legendary" customer service who would think to contact them directly? The hair dryer sequence is priceless. She and your hounds are my favorite internet beings. no worries Merrill, I have bail money!! The truth is out there. Your new gang name should be "Merrill the Hammer".
Its good to see a balanced conversation between detector users and a manufacturer. I find your videos very logical and well thought out and where necessary supported by facts you have taken time to obtain from other, reliable, sources. This is an approach some of you detractors should adopt. By the way, I was particularly attracted to the Manticore by the promise of more power and therefore greater depth? So it could be a unique selling point for a manufacturer. PS Minelab user since 1985, in UK. Well done, keep it up.
Thanks for your honesty, integrity and professionalism to the hobby. I look forward to the imperical evidence presented, literature review including citations with Harvard referencing, Manticore information will no doubt be approached systematically, questions posed and explored, and any themes revealed and analysed, as noted by Saunders et al. (2007). No doubt you will clarify your epistemological position on your three primary questions. From one teacher to another.... lol. Can't wait for the new video!
After watching your Minelab video I was about to switch too the latest-Whites-actually I’m considering upgrading from my ML Xterra 70 to the 900 as a result of your channel..
Nicely done Merrill. You raised some great questions in that video but I didn't think you had enough data to prove your claim that ML lied about the Manticore. I look forward to the video with ML's response either way. Stay safe& HH!
Actually, I think the burden is on Minelab to prove that their marketing claims are TRUE, and to provide data to back that up. I don't think the burden is on Merrill, since he would not be in possession of all the testing data from Minelab.
When I saw that video, I thought it might have been better to first approach MineLab to hear their response before posting it on YT. The increased "power" of the Manticore could be referring to its "processing" power and not necessarily it's ground field power. Anyway, thanks for doing the right thing in reaching out and clearing up this power question.
@@Hamlocks I agree with you completely on this. I love Minelab and bought a 900 and will continue to buy their products. That being said, I understand that they don't want to reveal too much of their technology and at the same time want to promote the sale of their products. If you're going to claim 50% more power "into the ground", that's quite substantial! I hope there is an easy answer for this that both provides some clarity of what that means as well as allowing them to protect their technology and patents. The fact that XP and Nokta came out with the same multi channel scanning after Minelab leads me to believe that the other two companies didn't reinvent the wheel.
@@stinkasscat My guess Minelab is going about answering these three questions very cautiously and may take all night to come up with an adequate answer? If that is possible?
Looking forward to the new video.. Your video was valuable for my though, having just purchased a new detector. I went with the 900 instead of the Manticore, not thinking the marketing ploy was not worth the extra $ to me. The Deus 2 was also in the running, but I am a loyal fan of Minelab.
Good on you well done, it’s just a shame that mine lab hasn’t got a channel where we can ask them directly questions like are they going to bring out anymore headphones to rainproof or showerproof? Many thanks well done🇬🇧
Merril i think you mean it well but its tricky trying to explane if you dont know what it means. Be glad that Minelab contacted you because they can explane about the power output. -29 dBw is already a big difference in power output.
Hope you get the answers you're looking for or have they answered them already? Hate to think Mark had to come back with the answers. Looking forward to your second viral video.
What Minelab needs to do is get the product out on a mass scale so we can all make up our minds. This waiting is causing people to question the machine.
All the detectors put out the same power, and most of the SMF detectors use the same frequencies. I think the difference is in the receiving and interpretation of the return signals. That said, the Manticore and the CTX3030 are so expensive, they'd have to have leprechauns inside them, leading you to pots of gold in order to make them worth the price. I'll keep my Legend, thanks...
looking forward to their answers - I still use my Whites PI's over the 800 because I am still learning how to use it and I am afraid to get the 800 wet - the 800 definitely blows all my other detectors away with small gold - only issue I have had with the 800 is the headset crapped out the second time I charged it - I have a different BT headset that has no base and is much better for my ears so I never bothered to pursue replacement - I currently have zero complaints with Minelab -
Just want to say that I really enjoy your videos. I respect the academic approach you take when testing and researching these machines. In looking to buy another and I hold your opinions in high regard. Thanks for what you do.
Minelab contacted me when I found the issue with the 800 and large U.S silver coins. They sent out an update to fix it. Your issue is a little different !
@It's Okay To Be Clown Pilled The 800 when it was first released would not give the correct ID and tone on large U.S silver coins , half dollars and dollars , 90+ silver content.
You are correct Merrill. I cant wait to hear their creative definition of power. Power would mean more wattage just like you said and if the FCC has a limit then thats that.
Minelab is certainly going to put their take on things and I look forward to hearing the arguments. Watts is watts and anything trying to spin it otherwise is going to be comedic.
Watched the original and great to hear another version will be coming out which hopefully answers those questions. Rest assured I am no fan boy of any brand…like you I have a few detectors, including a CTX and a Nox 800. Keep up the good work with the channel. Daz
I did think your statement was bold and legally might be problematic unless you have uncontrovertible evidence you are correct. As an advertiser, Minelab might be allowed some "mere puffery" or a degree of exaggeration, but cannot go as far as misleading the consumer. I guess all of this will turn on Minelab's interpretation of the word power. or power into the ground Interestingly, the Manticore has a quoted run time of 10 hours with a charge time of 7 hours, the Nox 800 has a runtime of 12 hours with a charge time of 4 hours. The Nox battery is stated as 3.7 volts and 18.5 watt-hours (power consumption). Oddly the specifications for the Manticore battery are not provided. The lack of this information makes a direct comparison of the power consumption of the Manticore difficult. All very interesting.
Thanks Merrill, I look forward to seeing the next video. I'm very much like you, where you want to know the truth about new technology and post it for all to see. Thats very important to the world today. Keep up the good work and I'll stayed tuned, as the old saying goes!!! LOL
Without seeing either video and talking off the top of my head, I would say there is a misunderstanding of exponential values. I.e. some might think that 50% more power from -30dBm would be -15dBm, but this is not true. 1/2 power is a value of 3dB, so 50% more power from -30dBm would be -27dBm as dB is exponential, not linear.
Right on Merrill. While your talking to them, West Country Cleg saw a Russian soldier with a brand new Manticore, when there's an apparent band on importing tech to them. He's concerned that the Manticore's semiconductors would end up in a Russian Mig. Fair concern I suppose. I also suppose he could have obtained it on the black market too. Genuine Russian vodka and caviar are probably readily accessible in the West's black market as well. Sanctions rarely stop anything, there just business opportunities for shadow people.
Merrill, tell him to call me . I need to know where my pre-order is ? I pre-ordered in the beginning of November and we are in February and still not in my hands. The Nox 700/900 came out first . If I would have learned of these being released first I would have made that purchase !!!!
Excellent job The answers are going to be that yes FCC does control power output. But the improvement in processors and the multiple frequency allows a better result using the same power levels. 1 watt.
Power efficiency / percentage is also a product of the antenna which in this case is the coil so I am going to guess that is where the 50% could be, maybe they have used silver wire for the coil.
To add to other statement. Sometimes there is nothing like a good rant. I think you should have that in updated version of video so all in in there for everyone to see. I wish I could have seen the original. Have 3 different Minelab machines so I do know what you are talking about most the time when it comes to these machines. I am just glad you have enough followers that you are holding the nose to the fire on some of these companies! Well done. You know you strike a cord, when they contact you so quickly. Can hardly wait for the upcoming video (please leave the rant in there.)
