I have been running the Nox 800 for over a year now and it never ceases to amaze me in its ability to seperate targets. Quite often when you see 3 different VDI numbers it is actually detecting 3 different metal objects I've noticed. If you run in all metal mode you will get greater depth out of the detector.My wife and I love the videos and I look forward to learn more about the Nox through your videos.Thanks and Happy Hunting

I have noticed that even with a couple targets in the same spot you still get a reading from all of them. When I dug my first couple “in the field” targets I pulled the plug and spread it on the ground to find a couple different targets. I started realizing that it happened only on the ones where the target ID’s were jumpy before digging. Kind of amazing that it picks them up... I’m so used to battling combination vdi’s and passing them up because it looks too much like junk. That’s awesome you two like the videos I’m making, I really try my best with them although sometimes times restrictions make for less involved videos than others. I’ll be back out this coming weekend to make another video out hunting with the Nox at the site I found the trime at. Hoping to pull some nice finds out if there. Thank you for checking my videos out. 🙂

Look at page 63 of the Equinox manual. You will be able to see the default settings of the different modes. Two of the main differences on the modes are Recovery speed and tones. Recovery speed effects depth. I found that setting any search mode to 5 tones makes the noise more even. As time goes on you will learn to adjust all 5 tones to different volumes, different pitches and different ranges of ID. The benefit is that you will spend much less time looking at the display and hum along listening for tones covering more ground. “Dirtfishing” has great videos on equinox settings. Your videos are great, as always.

Thank you for the info, I have been talking with a friend over the phone that explained exactly what you are saying. I tend to like many tones and may stick with it but I'm still trying to find my cadence with the new machine.. will take time.. but I'm enjoying every minute of it. Thank you for the suggestion of videos and I will check his channel out tonight so I can pick up on what they are suggesting. Thanks again for checking out my video as well as commenting... take care.

I like your videos keep-em coming. I noticed at 4:07 you had a target with vdi of 35 and a depth over 12" (each little triangle equals 2" of depth). After digging it turned out to be a nail. If you get back to that spot check that hole one more time. It sounds like a silver quarter to me. Put in a little iron bias, about 2 or 3. That should quieten it down a lot and eliminate most nails. You will get lots of little chirps when you go over iron, but if you don't get a strong repeatable signal let it go. Once you figure it out it will be you go to machine 90% of the time. Old house sites the 6" coil will help a lot. Keep up the great vids.
@squarenailsquirrel9638

Thank you and glad you enjoy the videos. Thank you for the tip utilizing the iron bias at a low setting and checking the solid hits... I’m still trying to get the feel for the language of the machine down.... going to take some time. I actually thought about not checking that hole again when the nail turned up... I’m so used to the V3i giving me great sounding square nails over the years although I’m figuring out that the 800 can really keep you from digging trash as well as pick up targets and separate when they are laying almost on top of each other. The combination VDI issue I’ve dealt with may not be that much of an issue from now on from what I’m seeing so far. Liking that a ton. Thanks for checking out the video and for commenting.

I don't own an equinox, but I have watched a ton of videos with them. One thing I'm not a fan of is the apparent lack of a numbered depth gauge for pinpoint. If I'm hunting in parks for coins I want to know exactly how deep a coin is so I don't have to dig any deeper or bigger hole than I have to and leave the ground pristine.
@SandBoy408
@SandBoy408 5 лет назад
Yes, i agree. Equinox pinpoint is not so sharp
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
I did notice that without the numbered depth I was at a loss as to how deep the target is. The Equinox runs with modulation making the deeper targets sound quieter which helps and that’s is disc mode. When in pinpoint I believe it does the same modulation and has a graphic scale as to depth although I haven’t figured what three bars or two bars means... could be 4 or 6”... there isn’t a number associated... which would be nice to have. The V3i and sport do great at this numbered depth.

TheArgos12 I guess that detectorist today are spoiled... I’m 56 and started metal detecting with my father back when I was an early teenager. We had a Compass metal detector which I still have today. It has one knob which adjusts the volume. There were no screens back then, no numbering system that gave you an idea of what was under the ground prior to digging the item, and of course there was no depth meter. Discrimination was just being made available about the second year we were into the hobby. This feature really only worked to rule out pull-tabs but using it also ruled out nickels...! So, we dug every signal and hoped for the best. Through getting involved in the hobby my father became a dealer for Garrett and Compass metal detectors so we got to try out different detectors. At that time, there were only four companies really putting out detectors, Garrett, Compass, White’s, and Fisher who put out a low cost, inferior product back then... I must say that as primitive as detectors were back then, we had some great adventures and some great finds... Everything from Civil War Tokens, all kinds of Silver coins, Wheat Cents, Indians, Large Cents, Halve Dollars, Bunches of Pocket Knifes, Tons of “Miscellaneous Stuff”, we never did find any SilverDollars or Gold Coins, though we did find a 14k Gold Diamond Engagement Ring valued at $750.00 back in the 70’s...! I just purchased a Equinox 800 (Thanks to my Amazing Wife) and haven’t unboxed it as of yet because I’m getting over a cold right now but I’m chomping at the bit to get it out and see what it can do...! I have to say that I believe that some of the Wonderlust has been taken away by the new detectors that tell you how far down and most likely what the item is... I want to say thanks to my father for indulging a young boy’s dreams of finding buried treasure...! I want to say to all of the fathers and grandfathers out there, please consider making the investment in a metal detector and then sharing the adventures that await with your children and grandchildren... You’ll be making a investment in memories that will last a lifetime...! Even if you never find any “Buried Treasure” the time spent with your children and grandchildren will be priceless...!

@troystutsman Wow... thanks for sharing this sort of a lifetime in the hobby. I too am not really looking for the buried treasure... pretty much anything from the past makes me happy... even if it’s a square nail or harmonica reed. Thank you for commenting as well as checking the video out.

well.... Kind of did. I don't think I've ever had as much success with a machine on the first hunt like I did with this one. I can't wait until I get to know the machines language better and be confident with what's under the ground before I dig. To be honest I couldn't tell the "iffy" signals... other than a couple targets that had jumpy target ID's. I hope to get good with it in the future... thanks for checking the video out.

Field 1 with separation at 5-6 iron bias at 1 and maxed sensitivity is my go to set up. Although I discriminate most of below 19 in parks and woods, unless at an old site or gold hunting. You are not going to back to the other detectors. I did not use my Fisher in a long time lol
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
Thank you... I’m learning that the recovery delay in the 4-6 range depending on density of targets with the iron bias set to 1 or 2 really works well. I sweep a little slower than most so I may keep the recovery down around 4 to match my swing as well as gain some depth. I’m not sure if the machine needs much help with depth though... it really has me digging some deep holes so far getting items outside the range of what I was retrieving. I really hope this continues because I can go back to the last couple years sites and get what I missed. Thank you for sharing your setup, it’s very helpful and both I and others who read this can learn from it.

U need the carbon fiber shafts from rods by plugger
@squarenailsquirrel9638

I looked into those and they are kinda pricey for what your getting. If they made blue ones and we’re cheaper I’d get a set. I was going to order carbon shafts a d try to make a set of my own... wouldn’t be the fiber but stranded like a carbon arrow and in 1” OD... runs about 3.00 a linear foot. The issue is the end piece the coil hooks to and the compression lock. Once and if I find time i’ll try to come up with something folks can just make for themselves.

Between full time work, a business in another state, teaching part time and metal detecting.. I'm fairly tied up. I will try my best to get some made. Your cut copper has a little bit of a story to it. So, half of a British Penny is a Half Penny (or haypenny). Half of a Haypenny is a Farthing - which is the smallest denomination of English money during our colonial period. Plenty of Half Pennies and Farthings were manufactured and in circulation in 18th Century England, but in the Colonies, there was a real shortage of coinage (currency shortages actually were part of the reason for the Revolution). For that reason, people would actually cut the Pennies (and presumably, Half Pennies) to make change - just as was done by the mints in England the Spanish Colonies with larger-denomination silver coins for many centuries. In England, they would have never gone to such trouble - nor would it have been considered acceptable or proper to do so. But in America, we are going to make change by golly, even if it means chopping up a penny! Cut coppers are fairly unique to the colonies, for that reason, and they are relatively uncommon. Very nice find.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share this about cut coins. I can tell you didn’t copy and paste it and it’s in your own words and it’s grestly appreciated. I am sure that both I and many others who read this learned from it and it will better the hunt as well as understanding of the time period and history of the relics and coins in which we are in search of. 🙂 very cool. I was very happy with finding the coin that I did even if I can’t identify which coin it actually is. I’m thankful to have that site to detect especially since the landowner allows me to come when I please. I hope to revisit there in the fall since I have other sites to try before crops are planted in the very near future. I’m hoping for rain to slow them down although the farmers are all hoping that it will stay dry.

Thank you. 🙂 I was surprised by his productive the site was this time out. I will do setups for each time I operate it on a hunt like I typically do. Once I get a thorough understanding of what needs further adjusting or items I prefer due to machines response to typical targets... I will then make a video. I don’t want to come straight out of the gate as something that can instruct on the machine because I’m way to new to it. I need many hours under my best before I can advise on anything. Thank you for checking the video out.

I am used to the V3i VDI scale, Kinda hard to get that out of my head when using the 800.. I put on a 15" coil and really have to dig deep, I think I need a long handle shove now (and started to dig Chinese coins..lol).... I also had to switch from Field #2 to #1 to learn the 800..
@troystutsman1400
@troystutsman1400 5 лет назад
Dave Horlacher Hi, Would you mind sharing what your reasons were for switching...?
@davehorlacher
@davehorlacher 5 лет назад
A few things came into play.. Weight is a big issue for me and my shoulder after 20+ years swinging a coil it only took less then an hour for it to start throbbing. Also the V3i is highly customizable allowing every possible adjustment to be user configurable. Hundreds of settings and menus to scroll through and adjust. I knew this and that's what I wanted! I have been a computer engineer for the last 26 years so this was not a big deal for me and fully understand how the V3i works and what the settings do and how they behave. Inconsistency of the V3i was a major put off for me. the settings that worked well one day on the same 4x4 test bed, did not do well the next. Running my DFX across the same test bed was consistent, the V3i was not.. high tones then low tones the VDI scale was all over the place. White's serviced the detector twice after showing them a video of the behavior side by side of the DFX and a old BH Landstar. And all that was done was a calibration each time. Every time I dug a plug it was a guessing game.. Silver tones with high VDI revels a bottlecap sort of game. I have a early model of the V3i and not the upgraded model they did for awhile. I have found some great coins with the V3i, but noticed my finds dropping off after switching from the DFX, with the V3i I just dig every signal low tone or high tone and only use for relic hunting. The 800 so far has been pretty consistent on my test bed, Although not perfect I am happy with the results and the depth is kind of amazing. I have spent the last 20+ years at a favorite spot, and now have to start all over with a new detector to see what was missed. I am thinking about a video series about it..
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
It's going to take time for me as well to get used to the compressed scale although I really like it. I like the quartered VDI ranges of low, low medium, high medium and high... i"m not a numbers hunter where I remember exactly what a barber dime is but I do know that in the 20's the target is likely a coin as long as it pinpoints about the right size and repeats. I have found that I like both the 1 and 2 programs although I feel like if I really want to clean a site out I will need to hunt the site twice... one in 1 and once in 2 to favor either low or high targets.. I'm ok with that because I will feel confident when I leave that I found what I wanted to find. Thanks for sharing as well as checking out the video.

The Equinox doesn't have ID number separation like the Whites V3i but the 50 tones makes up for the ID number separation. It has very fast recovery, great target separation and it is a very deep machine.
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
That’s true on the ID scales. The iron is only -9 to O and the good stuff is +1 to + 40. I like that it’s comlressed like that because you can just narrow it down to 4 ranges that common targets fall in. I did notice and have heard from others that on silver the numbers are dead on... even at a depth. I’m so used to the VDI’s being so far off once they are past the 4” deep mark that it’s just guess work. It would be nice if the machine continues to love up to what the box says on accurate target ID’s.

@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
It's a pretty hot machine... the language it speaks (it's reactions, data, processing speed, etc.) is it's own creature and will take time to get used to. I believe the AT PRO is a great machine as well and has it's strong points finding great stuff... just look around on youtube... that machine finds awesome stuff every day. Don't get discouraged on your machine because if there is one thing in detecting that gets people down is doubting what they are using. If you know your machine well, make it an extension of your arm and understand what it's telling you in it's language you will be successful out hunting... but... the targets have to be there to find them. Think about how many times you have lost a 10.00 bill... probably not often because you hang tight to those... same goes for 100+ years ago... those folks really held tight to anything silver. Keep at it and if you make the switch I'm sure it will work out for you but don't feel pressured because the AT PRO is also a great machine.

I told you that machine was the shit. Wait till you hit one of those houses you've pounded before with your other 2 whites machines. You will be amazed to see what whites just could not detect. It makes no sense at all. It probably has to do with the Multi Frequencies and the hi tech processor. Be careful on passing up beeps with that machine. Matron Head Large cents beep different that Classic head large cents (because of alloy difference) . Also, some seated dimes hit low in the 24 range when they are very deep. With me being in upstate NY I find a lot of Canadian silver too and its numbers are different than us coins. Fat indian head pennies will ring up as 15. I haven't found a flying eagle with it yet but a friend did and I think he said it was either a 15 or maybe even a 19. So you should dig all variety beeps with it. You cant leave anything in the ground with that machine to have the best results and most fun ALWAYS DIG 12's Those are nickels and $1 gold coins.. HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!! GREAT VIDEO BTW!

LOL.. so far I really like it but it's only one trip out so far. I will be visiting many sites I've been to before with my Whites machines just to see what happens, it will be kind of nice since there won't be much trash and fairly clean sites. I typically dig anything that repeats and sounds decent with the target ID specifically not being of the main concern. But... I do get excited when they are higher and in the silver range. Thank you for sharing your advise from your experiences with the machine, both I an others can learn from it. I am really excited to get out this coming weekend with the machine since I wasn't able to Easter weekend due to traveling. Thanks for checking out the video and for commenting.

Hay man I’ve been contemplating getting the 800 as far as understanding depth I believe for every triangle on the screen indicates 2” The VDI numbers are narrow on that machine Its probably to early to ask you but what’s your thoughts on it? Do you think that the machine has a tendency to roll left and right in your hand ?
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
Thank you for the info and I believe you are right... there have been a couple other folks that have mentioned the 2” per block. The target ID numbers are narrow and I actually am liking that... it breaks things down to 1/4’s of the VDI scale and I can tell what range the target is in. I’m not the type that knows a Lincoln penny is a 72 ID but I do know that if the detector is hitting a certain way, the pinpoint depicts a smaller coin sized target and the target ID is in the low to mid 70’s... it’s most likely a Lincoln penny. Hopefully that makes sense. So... if I’m the first block 0-10 I know what to expect, 11-20 same thing and so forth. The separation is mind blowing and the depth achieved has been spectacular... with the limited time I have on the machine I’m confident in saying that I wish I had the machine a long time ago... very pleased.

Your welcome and glad you got to experience it. It’s going to take time to get fluent with it but so far the experience has been great. hi from Romania.....what kind of shovel is that? thanks and happy hunting with the nox ;)
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
Hello for the USA🙂 the shovel I’m using is called a trenching shovel bought at a department store. In the USA the typical store would be a Home Depot or Lowe’s which I think are only US based. There is probably comparable over in your country. The shovels are cheap and work very well... with all the very expensive metal detecting shovels on the market I can’t bring myself to buy one. There really isn’t anything innovative about a shovel... they all dig holes but some cost 80% more than what they should... so I just use the cheap ones. 🙂 I have a video in my video list on how I made mine... it’s cheap and simple and lasts.

That is a great way to describe the equinox. Ignore the weak jumpie signal and dig the clear signals. It is amazing at distinguishing between good and bad targets once you learn what it is telling you. I have recently hit a cellar hole that had been detected at least 3 or 4 times previously (once by me with a Whites mxt) and nothing significant was found. I hunted the same sight with my Nox and have pulled 7, yes I said 7, large cents from that "hunted out " site. Best of luck. Also just found a awesome 18k rose gold mens ri g with a giant carved tigers eye stone. Ring dates to the 1800s. Love my nox.hh.

Once planted I have to wait until late fall to get back out to detect in them. You mentioned about cleaning coins... I’m sure you’ve heard that you don’t want to clean a coin because of reducing its value. Basically, some soap and water is all you want to use. Even the use of a soft brush can cause scratches on a coin which can mean the difference between a hundred dollar coin and one that’s valued at a thou- sand dollars...! First, you need to determine if the coin is a key date, valuable coin. If so you’ll want to be extremely careful when cleaning it up. If it’s not then you don’t have to be as careful because the value won’t really be affected. I have found that the use of a Sonic Cleaner, the kind used to clean jewelry, can be very affective at removing “Gunk” from coins and other items as well. You can use whatever type of cleaning solution you choose, normally I just use water. I’ve also found that a little bit of “Dawn” dish soap added to the water can be helpful, especially on items coated with clay. I hope that this helps...! I’d like to hear what other people are using to clean their finds...! Have a great day and be blessed. Btw... New to your channel and just subscribed.
@squarenailsquirrel9638
@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
Thanks for the info Troy... I've researched and tried many approaches to cleaning coins I find. The silver coins like you say are best to use the detergents and no scrubbing but the copper coins are where better methods are needed. I use a heated sonic cleaner with a jewelry additive in distilled water to help clean periodically when I really need an ID... otherwise I just use a toothpick very gently and some oil... not a coating but a smudge on the kitchen counter and then with another finger (dry) I then transfer barely any oil to the coin just to give relief of the surface. The coppers I have no concern with value because as a detecting find they are just for my pleasure nice a collectors value really isn't retained after corrosion levels we see. I've never sold anything, given away tons but never sold a coin find over the years... I just collect them I guess. I've though about the hobby and why I do it and it's mainly the discovery, adventure exploring and being out in the field to pull up lost items to show folks. Hopefully with you sharing your info it will spark some conversation about cleaning techniques to help myself and others out with their finds. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to do so. I also appreciate the subscription.. I will always keep things educational, entertaining and family friendly on there... glad you joined in. Take care.

Square Nail Squirrel As I always say... Never to old to learn a new trick. I haven’t tried using jewelry cleaner or the oil trick you mentioned. I’ll have to give them a try thanks...! I’m the same way, I have kept everything that I’ve ever found. An Uncle of a childhood friend of mine got both of us into coin collecting when we were about 12 and I’ve enjoyed the hobby all of my life...! My oldest grandson is 10 and I hope to get him started coin collecting in a year or two. Have a great day...! Good luck hunting and be blessed.

Minelab should make videos like Garrett did on the AT Pro that explain all of the features and functions of their Equinox 800 as to make the learning curve easier for new users to understand. I've heard a great many people knocking the Equinox 800,but plenty more people singing its praises.Perhaps they think it should be easier like the machines they are used too. Minelab for quite some time has featured cutting edge technology.I was glad to hear about the Equnox when it first was first unveiled at Detectaval in England.Back then Minelab was selling the Equinox faster than they could produce them,and many dealers had them on back order for months.

Hi John... I just make them out of fairly cheap shovels bought at places like Home Depot or Lowe’s. It’s called a trenching shovel. There are many 80.00 to astronomical amounts of $ shovels you can buy specific to detecting although in my opinion... there isn’t much science, engineering, physics and special space age technology about digging a hole. Cheap shovels do a dandy job. 🙂 Dave your money for a machine or pinpointer. I have a video for what I did to cut my shovel down and what to expect during the experience.

If the equinox totally beats out the v in performance i’ll sell it and use the funds to grab the big and small coil for the 800. I don’t need three machines so eventually one will go to help fund my hobby as it advances.

Was curious about the finds pouch you are using. Who makes it? Also, do you find the Nox pinpoints at the very front of the coil by the small, molded-in triangle, or does yours pinpoint at the center of the coil? Mine seems to pp at the very front near the triangle.

Hello DG27... lol on SSNox 😂... thank you for the congrats... I’m very happy with the new machine and very glad I finally got the money to get it. 🙂 thanks on the 🔥... it’s amazing not what a metal detector can do for that. Lol. Had a great hunt out there with the new machine... it’s amazing how much there was left in that area. I’ll be visiting many old sites I’ve already hunted to see if the same story plays out. I’m hoping not because it will be upsetting that I left so much behind. I’ll have another video out not this week but early next. I did some long distance traveling the past 4 days. Take care.

I think so too.. it's a different creature than what I have been using and will take some time to get proficient with it although I believe it will help discover many more good targets and improve my hunt. I really like the White's brand of detectors but I don't sell detectors or have any interest in the company.. I just want to find stuff.. pretty much it. :) Thanks for checking out the video.

Hey Buddy, gratz on getting the Nox 800. I have the 600 and I have never had a more telling machine. this Nox picks up so much in the ground and lets you know there's something there amongst the junk if any. It has a learning curve but it's an easy one, I'm still learning also so keep on explaining your settings and why because you're helping others learn with you. I wish i could go hunting with you one day, your good people. I really enjoy your video's and always look forward to the next one. Keep up the good work and God bless.

I wasn’t aware there were so many folks on here using the equinox machines, with you being one of them. It’s really turning out to be a blessing because I’m learning from everyone. I don’t mind being the person that’s watched and critiqued on the operation of the machine as long as folks benefit from it once I learn how to do it correctly. I just want folks to succeed in the hobby and find what they are after utilizing the machine they believe in. Depending on where you are located I’m ok with taking a day trip to hunt with a friend. You can email me squarenailsquirrel @ Gmail and let me know where your at... I just drove to Texas this last weekend and made a couple stops to meet followers of mine on Instagram (land surveying related profile). If you not too far or on the way to a place I’m visiting i’ll check in with you. thanks for checking the video out and i’ll be back out this coming weekend hunting the spot I found the trime at.

Thank you. 👍🏻 lol... joining the nox-side. I’m totally into finding stuff and whatever it may be machine wise that finds... that’s what I’d like to operate. So far I think this new machine is going to take care of the finding stuff so i’ll Keep running it and comparing it to what I’ve alwsys used. Kinda nice to have the change. I’ll be back out this coming weekend doing another hunt... hope to pull some nice finds.

Just one more! I've said that line thousands of times. Great video. I'm going to go to the 800 real soon, this vid should push me over the top, though, it looks good. As soon as the snow melts here, that is.

Lol. I really didn’t want to leave this day from hunting. 🙂 I was having so much fun being out there with the new machine. I’ll be back out very soon to make another video with the 800 at the site where I found a civil war general service button and the silver trime... that patch is so dense out there that both the V and the Sport had a time with it. I’m sure the 800 will have its work cut out for it but the speed of the machine along with the separation I hope will give me the advantage this time. Making the choice to get an Equinox, from my experience so far, is a solid and positive decision to improve your experience in the hobby.

It’s a great machine and it really has me excited to get out and hunt. I haven’t felt this excited in awhile and am very thankful I finally got the money together to purchase one. Glad to see you and many others have an Equinox and the experience that I’m going through learning as well as operating will be acceptable. I figured everyone was dedicated Whites users and would bail on me once I brought out the Minelab.

@squarenailsquirrel9638 5 лет назад
Thank you very much... it was a fun hunt. Pertaining to the weight... the equinox feels like a cup of water compared to a gallon jug... I know it’s just ounces but ounces really count swinging a machine all day. It’s night and day difference between the two.

That was an awesome first hunt, a lot of action at that spot. Seems like you definitely got the hang of the Nox. Like you said going from the V3i to the equinox makes the Nox feel like a cakewalk. That would be awesome if you come up with more info on the cut coin even though it looks pretty worn, still a really cool find regardless!

Square Nail Squirrel yeah you are most likely going to get similar outcomes at all your old spots lol. I know I did, that’s why I asked before if you hunted parks. I’ve found a lot of my silver this year at old parks that everyone and their brother has been through. Just something about the Nox that brings the old spots back to life, I’m blown away by it. Probably why I go out digging almost everyday, I know I’ll find something good even if it’s only a wheat or 2 haha. Keep swinging it and you are only gonna like it more and more! I still love the V3i it’s a great machine.. mine just collects dust now sadly, kinda bittersweet but it treated me well for time I was using it primarily.
