Mineral supplementation is an important part of habitat management. Antler growth, doe lactation and overall herd health, benefit significantly when mineral sites are available. In Part 1, we'll talk about why mineral is important, as well as determining how and where to establish a mineral site. Be sure to check out Part 2 then, of the Mineral Supplementation episode where we'll take a look at a handful of products currently on the market and rank them in order of effectiveness within the "attractant" and "supplement" scale.

Great observation, Josh! The 620 has been an absolute blessing to have on the property making for short work across a plethora of projects over the years.

i have heard cwd can be in dirt preons and shouldn't do things to encourage deer to eat dirt, keeping bait off ground etc

Nearly everything deer eat is on the ground.

How do you ensure all residue is gone 30 days before deer season?

Great question and one we've wondered too! Every year it remains one of the top violations that PA Game Wardens file - hunting over a mineral or bait site. Oddly, the regulation states it's unlawful to hunt in or around the area. It's interesting that measurements for florescent orange requirements and distances from homes or roads are exactly specified, but the mineral and residue topic is so broadly described. Best to just avoid the area all together, but how far even is that!?

Correction... leaves break down results in a neutral PH. I grow Organic gardens and this is always the case. Nature want neutral.

Thanks for your comment George, we appreciate the insight! As leaves break down in any appreciable home garden, you're right, they can assist in soil pH neutralization efforts. Across a forest floor, though, decomposition can be significantly slower to occur and under a different set of circumstances. Garden soils are plentiful and consistently maintained, while forest soil - what little might often exist - not so much. Oak leaves, for instance, can bottom out in the low 4's. If a forest soil profile amounts to nothing more than a few inches before hitting rock, those pH levels look much different than a bountiful vegetable garden.

Don't put it on wood or stumps since they need wood in the cold winter and can hurt their stomach system
