We’ve had a lot of viewers asking about the Mini 2 issue where the batteries are not auto-discharging like they should when in the drone or in the charging hub. In this clip I explain why this may not be happening and show you a few things you can do to keep your batteries safe. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for watching!

Great video so thank you for that. In my own test in the last few weeks as to how the Mini 2 batteries currently behave outside of the unit, it would appear that they go through two phases of auto discharge, first after 24 hours or so down from a full 100% to 96%, but instead of discharging further at around 5 days, it seems to take that bit longer and around day 6-7 is when the 2nd discharge phase begins which sees the charge drop eventually to 72% over a 24 hour, so the manual stating that by day 5 it should have dropped to low 70s is misleading. I did get notification of firmware updates for my batteries last week and then left them in the hub for 3 days but they stayed at 100% so it looks like DJI to date haven't pushed out a firmware to facilitate auto discharge when they are connected. That said I'm not too bothered and happy to keep the batteries unconnected to anything when storing them

I'm just bought Mini 2 single. But as experienced enthusiastic RC Hobbyist, I always charged my battery about 2-3 bars and pulled out & put it outside from the drone as I treated the drone as my other rc, especially common rc LiPO battery. Never experienced a fire but already had swelling lipo experienced. Though I did not stored them on LiPO safety pack or other unflameable storage box tho. Haha

Good information Rick. I have placed the LiPO batteries into the hub, but not clicked them in all the way. After a couple days, I pushed them all the way in and they were all at 3 lights after starting fully charged at 4 lights. I hesitate to put them in the hub backwards for fear of warping the hub. Maybe a problem, maybe not. Anyway, that's what I found... Thanks for your great information....
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 3 года назад
Dennis, as long as they are not fully inserted into the hub and making contact, they will discharge as normal. It's only when they touch those contacts that the battery has to stay "awake" in case the power button is pressed. Thanks for the post and happy flying! Rick

Great information as always thank you,can I ask so is it perfectly safe to leave the battery in my air2s drone
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 3 года назад
Thanks for the post and it's a tricky answer. If you leave the battery in the Air 2S it will auto-discharge normally so no worries about the charge. Where it gets tricky is that the auto-discharge produces some heat and that's never a good thing for the quad. It's small, but over time it worries me that it might unnecessarily fatigue the quad. The other concern is that if a battery does decide to go non-linear and misbehave, if it's out of the quad, you've only lost a battery. if it's inside the quad you've lost everything. To put this into perspective, I have a ton of quads in the shop and literally a hundred or more Lipo cells. I've been flying for years with a lot of other pilots and have never had, or heard of a Lipo fire with any of them. Its a rare issue, but like with home fires, we have to be careful because of the possibility. I hope that helps and my advice is always to fly more and worry less. Rick

Thank you! I'm want to use this for prospecting, so I'm thinking of getting the mini 2 fly-more package, then ordering a spare Mini 1 battery so I can always have one battery that is topped off. I can keep the mini 2 batteries at 50% so as not to damage them, and if I need to get in the air unexpectedly I can use the lithium-ion while I'm topping off the 3 lithium polymer batteries.

A quick fix is to use an elastic band. Place the batteries in the holder the right way around and put an elastic band around the top of them where the terminals are. This stops the batteries falling into place and because it’s elastic when you take one out it holds the other two in place.
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 3 года назад
Gary, thanks for the post and that's a great suggestion. I have a few other pilots I fly with and they use a heavy-duty rubber band to do a similar thing. Anything that keeps the batteries from falling all the way into the socket is a good thing until we see a firmware update to sort out the logic.

@WW5RM
@WW5RM 3 года назад
Yeah this is one of the issues keeping weight under 250g and Mini. Add a switch and you just added weight plus increased the size. I'm sure DJI is working on it but I doubt it can be fixed with firmware. Being in a "connected" state without a physical switch it would most likely take hardware to fix. Probably something addressed in the next model. I think there are some SDR type circuits in the Mini 2 but I'm not sure exactly. But even a SDR has limitations. If they had anticipated this a transistor should do the trick. Controlled by the battery and disconnected after 24 hrs to allow the auto discharge circuit to take over. But then again to engage it one would have to unseat the battery connection and reconnect it to disable the feature and fly. I think the simplest thing is to store the battery "disconnected ". Even if you just charged them take them out of the charger! Let the clock start! Not sure if it starts after a full charge or from a full "disconnect". Either way just "disconnect" them. Requires a little more work but it's worth it!

Hi, if you store the DJI mini 2 batteries out of the drone and either in the pouch or backwards in the hub, as you recomended and let the batts discharge, say down to 40-50%, or maybe less, can you then charge the batteries up to 90-100% just before you fly? Thanks!
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 2 года назад
Yes, that will work fine. The key thing is not storing the cells at full charge for long periods of time. The latest firmware from DJI for the Mini 2 includes a self-discharge feature to automatically lower the charge after a few days to protect the cells. Be sure to download this firmware to help protect the cells. Thanks for the post! Rick

Hi Rick. My question is if I fully charge my batteries and have a plan to fly in 2 or 3 days, should I keep them in hub or out of hub?
@Dronevalley

Thanks for the post and honestly the best plan would be to charge them the night before so they are fresh the next day for flying. If you have to charge them a few days early because you're traveling, you should store them in the hub so the "brains" in there can monitor the batteries and discharge them after 3 days in case you don't get a chance to fly. I hope that helps and consider subscribing to the channel as I'll have a ton of content posting this week. Rick

I recently bought a salt water damaged Mavic mini 2 drone. Then by mistake before cleaning the circuit I connected the battery for a second. Then smoke came out from the drone near the drone legs. I promptly removed the battery. Does not look like any damage to the battery. So put the battery in DJI Mavic 2 battery charging slot and it is showing the battery level and charging too. How can I know that battery is not damaged? Also is it same to insert this battery to another drone?
@lookout4lpe

L P Estrada I can do the battery out of my 3 pocket storage, but I canot turn them around and and reinsert. My DJI Mini 2 storage has a moulded guide runner that fits each battery and does not allow the battery to seat to the bottom, only half way in. So I will try small block of fire proof stuff inside a metal contatner.

George, you're going to be fine and it's an incredible machine that you're going to love flying. The only thing you'll need to remember is to never put your batteries away fully charged, especially into the hub. If you have them out of the hub (and drone) they will auto-discharge if needed. My routine is to fly them down to about 30% and put them away. The next time I want to fly I charge them and head out to the lake for some fun. @Dronevalley
@Dronevalley Месяц назад
Welcome aboard! Yep, the latest firmware fixed this issue. Be sure to check the DJI site for your drone under the "downloads" tab to make sure you're on the latest. Also, when you do the update be sure to rotate all of your batteries through the drone. They each have controllers inside of them (smart batteries) and may need to be updated as well. I hope that helps and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything.

my 3 batteries - all charged in the same charging hub - seem to not be working. They were showing as fully charged. I put them into my drone and they showed as having 96% charge but they simultaneously said 00'00" flight time remaining. One battery wouldn't even get the drone off the ground "unable to take off" and another one forced the drone to emergency land even though it had 48% battery left. My first thought was that I had put too much voltage through them when charging but now after watching this video I'm less sure. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks team!

You can’t out batteries of the Mini 2 in to the hub backwards on all models I guess because mine won’t do that. There is a tung and grove feature there to prevent the battery from sliding in all the way. So I use a fat rubber band around the contacts of the hub and then slide batteries in normally.

Mine has the line and groove too but with enought force it will go in backwards :D

Hey Rick, a side question here. How well do the Yagi Range Extenders really work? I was thinking about getting one for my MM2, are they really worth it?

One of my mavic mini batteries went into hibernation mode, but I always use it so it never discharges to 0 and isn’t permanently on 100, I also use it as a battery pack to charge my phone. Any idea why it’s in hibernation?

There are people modifying their batteries to get much more improved flight time for mini 2. Any videos on that?

One of the connections in my mini 2 battery is misaligned and now I can’t charge or discharge. Is there a way to fix this?

out of 3 batteries, 2 were fully charged but the 3rd was initially charging but somehow it went cranky with only one light blinking. How do I rectify it? Many thanks

I’m not sure if DJI have issued a firmware update for the batteries yet, but I’m not going to rely on their say so. I tried storing the batteries in my 3-way charging hub with a thick rubber band around the top of the battery but the electrical contacts inside the hub were biting in to the rubber band so I ditched that idea. Instead, I cut up a plastic eraser into smaller pieces about 18mm thick (I’m sure a thinner piece would work fine too) and dropped them into the bottom of the battery slots in the charging hub, to prevent 100% insertion of the batteries into the hub, while still achieving good storage efficiency in the Fly More Combo carry bag. I don’t want to take any chances with the batteries that might shorten their life. Now to find somewhere in Australia to actually fly the damn drone without having to apply for a permit many days in advance… I don’t encourage law-breaking but the restrictions here seem to encourage flyers to just send the drone up when there’s no one around, fly around without bothering other people, then pack up and get out of there before a park ranger shows up. Rather than applying for a permit, wait for a week or more for a response, and maybe get rejected any way. I’m all for complying with the rules from the air space regulator (CASA in Australia), but all the parks seem to require a permit which is a pain in the ar$e.
