Follow along and watch me struggle through this project -LOL. I created a mini art quilt featuring a Tiger Lily. The color was added with Derwent Inktense Pencils.

It’s very important to keep your fabric taut while stitching. Think of an embroidery hoop. It serves the purpose of keeping the fabric from puckering as you stitch. Same thing in quilting. I always start in the middle of a project and work outwards as it is much easier to keep the fabric taut and smooth out the puckers while under the needle. As I stitch, I keep both hands flat against the fabric and close to the needle as it gives me excellent control. Of course, as in embroidery, use a fusible stabilizer. That works to keep the fibers from wanting to pull in on itself as your stitching. Happy sewing!

Such pretty lillies! I have some stitched flowers that I will be colouring up with inktense as soon as I can get to them. I can't wait. This is a good push in the right direction.

Stabilizer that used for embroidery machines instead of interfacing. I like tear-away, but there are others.

Love this project!!! I’ve experienced the puckering when using a stiffer interfacing than fabric before stitching. Try using lightweight or knit interfacing on the muslin. Or a sturdier muslin. I have learned so much from your videos and look forward to every one of them. Merry Christmas!!!

Just beautiful, Julia! I LOVE that plaid fabric for the border (I would have never thought to use a plaid) -- it looks so colorful and bright. Thanks for another great video giving us ideas on how to use our Inktense pencils!

I wasn't sure about the plaid but it really helped pop the colors. Thank you so much for your comment! Julia

Use fusible stabilizer that is for machine embroidery. Use two layers for heavy stitching. Love your videos and creative ideas!

Great art quilt! I’ve found that the smaller the quilting, the better puckers disappear. It’s an amazing save for what looks like a disaster! So glad you didn’t give up on it, because it’s just beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Many blessings to you and your family for all the upcoming holidays!

I think the puckering is from too tight of tension on your thread machine? That's what I have found with my puckering.
@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 8 месяцев назад
Hi Connie, I think you are right. It seemed tight when stitching and then when I ironed it to remove the pen, it really started to pucker. I have to experiment some more. Thanks so much for your tip. Julia

I love your style, ideas & tips - this is beautiful work & the quilting has solved your 'problem' - have had the same issues when doing similar close stitching so when free motioning on a single layer would use tearaway stabliizer
@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 8 месяцев назад
Next time I am going to try the tearaway stabilizer. The muslin needs something but the iron on interfacing was hard to work with. Thanks so much for your comment and for watching! Julia

Your mini quilt turned out wonderful! Your idea of meander quilting was perfect! I have found if I use Solvy I get a little less puckering. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas! God bless!

I have found if you put your embroidery project upside down on a towel and PRESS with an iron most of the wrinkles will disappear. However in your case, you probably needed a heavier stabilizer or two layers. HTH

Maybe two layers of muslin instead of the stabiliser? Regardless it turned out fine, well done for sticking with it.

Wouldn't lengthening your stitch help to reduce the puckering?
@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 8 месяцев назад
My stitch length is set at 0 when free motion stitching. It’s hard to regulate and sometimes my stitches get too close. Practice! I’ll have to do my experimenting with other types of stabilizers.

So after reading the other suggestions, they all sound great! I’ve never done this style project- would it work to use your batting in place of interfacing!?!?? I have been learning from y’all and someday I’ll give this a go! Merry Christmas ❤️😀

Hi Rachel, Yes - I should have used batting instead of the interfacing, I'm sure that would have helped. Thanks so much for watching. Merry Christmas!

love this little quilt, and the borders are just perfect. could you have put the interfacing on when you heat set the pencils?
@stitchesbyjulia

Thanks so much for your comment. The muslin was light weight and I needed something under it when stitching. I am going to do some experimenting with different stabilizers.

I think the tension on you machine was wrong and that is why it puckered. That’s why you could see the other thread come through.

Maybe you could have used interfacing on the back
@stitchesbyjulia
@stitchesbyjulia 5 месяцев назад
Hi, I used a medium weight interfacing. I think the interfacing may have shrunk up when heat set the design. Or my tension was too tight. The quilting saved this project. Thanks so much for watching, Julia

Im 6 minutes into your video and I've already purchased the floral book and the pencil sharpener that you use. Luckily I already own some Intense pencils otherwise i think id be buying those as well 🤗 I LOVE your videos Julia! You are such an inspiration to me. I have been doing Sizzix Bigz Die applique and Gelli-plate printing 100% because of you. Life is never dull. 👍😁👍🩷🩷
