Eric, you are a legend sir !!! I’ve recently discovered your mini series, and it’s been absolute gold for me - I’ve had a troublesome mini that’s been on and (mostly) off the road for a while .....and thanks to you videos I’ve managed to get it back up and running better than it’s been for some time ! Thank you so much, you’ve saved me a fortune in garage fees and what’s more I’ve discovered a love of back-street mechanics that I never knew I had ! Keep up the great work and take it from me you certainly live up to your hero (and mine) Ed China !! All the best, Steve. Yorkshire, England.

What causes valves to bend and what if anything would prevent them from bending? Your a true mechanical genius!

If the timing belt or chain breaks the crankshaft and camshaft go out of time and the pistons can hit the valves and bend them, only interference engines have this issue

On heads that I was able to have the stems protrude enough, I attached a vacuum line to the stem and then to a regular electric drill (or whatever you could use for the line) and start with course for a short period and then go to fine and make that valve seat shine. Just like testing it before-hand, you can use water to see if your valves seat in after you put springs and keepers in.

Tip 2: I've read the injector Teflon seals must be sized before install and they will expand if removed from the engine for more than 10min. They are really not that fussy and if condition looks okay they don't need changing just because you pull an injector. New injectors come with seals pre sized already to 8mm dia. and they compress to 7.8mm in the engine. I didn't notice any expansion even after removal for some days. Of course if you put a new seal on an old injector it will need sizing to 8mm because you stretch it over the tip.

I admire you so much for filming and doing all this stuff. I can’t even imagine how much more work it is to document the steps. (where is Brian these days btw.? Still abroad?) I made my first ever timing belt on my Citroen last weekend. Never thought I would do this kind of work on my car one day, but with the encouragement of your videos I got more confident over the years and I‘m so happy I do all the work myself now...there is a different connection to your car when you and only you are involved on the repairs. Thank You Eric for everything you do! A loyal fan since your little dark garage times. :)

I think you did an excelent job eric. The washer mod cost nothing but you were able to install the stem/valve keepers :-D. "Need is the mother of invention." . It's an odd car in comparison to the cars you are used to, the jungle of peripheral components around the engine must have been a pain to remember. I still think it's a horrible cramped design, hopefully the first and last one you will ever need to fondle lol. Stretch bolts, not a nice thought.

Eric, I have a question, why do some bolts(mostly cylinder head ones) have to be torqued down to a specific amount and then as you show in this video to a certain degree angle? why don't they use the calculated torque spec of that certain degree angle?
@averagejoel4830
@averagejoel4830 6 месяцев назад
Can someone please explain to me how he set the timing on the intake and exhaust timing gears? I'm referring to the 2 gears that the chain rides on up top. I'm new to this stuff but from what I've understood so far in the video, he set all the pistons to be equal height with each other. Locked the flywheel so I assume it doesn't move when he's torqueing the crankshaft bolt? So now the crankshaft is in time, next to the gears. In the video he just places them on and torques them down. I know the both camshafts are in place with the lettering on top, so does that mean that once both the intake and exhaust camshaft gears are torqued the camshafts and crankshaft are in time? I could be wrong with all of this so please fill free to correct me everywhere I'm just trying to understand how this process is working. Thanks for your time & response.

Hey Eric. When are you going to be finished with the Mini videos or things related to it? I've been losing interest in them as Minis don't mean anything to me. I am not bashing or hating. It's reminding me of how the Fairmont (which was bad-ass, by the way) got dragged on too long (I didn't mind the fairmont, tbh. But a lot of folks didn't dig it). The Mini series is turning into a Maxi series. Back in April, you mentioned it would be running for the next few weeks. 5 months later, it's pretty much been nothing but Mini episodes with a few oddballs here and there. I personally would enjoy more general repair videos on the regular ETCG channel. I definitely know I'm not alone. Not bashing, just trying to throw in some constructive criticism. And apologizes if I'm coming off a bit brash.

Hello Eric, I can see you are knowledgeable about engines. I watched both videos on the Mini bent valves. I have some comments about how you worked the head on the bench. This is just FYI; One should never work on an overhead cam head with the head gasket surface against the work bench. An overhead cam head should always be supported by head stands at all times. This protects the valves from coming in contact with the bench as four of the valves did on that Mini head when you installed the cam timing brackets. In the 2nd video, between the 10 minute and 10min 30 second mark is where you can see the valves come in contact with the work bench. Also, the rear exhaust valve in #2 combustion chamber had contacted something at some time. Everything else you did seemed to be good work.

Very cool to hear it running. I'll likely never have a mini but love looking at the machining and of course watching it come apart and back together! Thanks for being real about the struggles. Makes me less upset with myself when crank timing gears done get torqued right and you have to do it again.

You only need to be rough with 90 degree turns - some people are absurdly anal when it comes to angle turns - but when you are doing multiple 90deg turns on the same bolts you don't have to be bang on....the angle turn is just to get the bolt into plastic yield stage - once its in, any more turn's on it will just stretch it without increasing clamping force any further. If you actually only did 80 degrees, or went over and did 100 degrees - makes no difference. That bolt is already in the plastic stretch region by the time you hit 45. Going over by a bit will do no harm either - if the bolts is 180 total it will take 200, it will be the same clamping force at 160 as well.

@rimmersbryggeri 6 лет назад
Yup. But if you really are anal (And byt sme miraculous coincidense dont have a proper torque angle gauge) you can mark outside of thethe bolt and an opposing point or flat before you start and when they face eachother you are done. Is very easy with 90 and 180 deg.

I have a 2004 Range Rover with the BMW M62 4.4L V8 engine and it has plastic timing chain guides. My guides broke apart at 152K miles. I replaced them and the chain myself at a cost close to $3K just for the parts and special tools to hold the cams and rebuild the two vans units, ouch.

@EricTheCarGuy I'm a premium member but can't comment on the premium vid so leaving it here-I know you asked about a better valve spring compressor solution in the premium vid and a better way to install the keepers so here it is: The ORIGINAL source for this spring compression tool is: www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/6329/MIN_6329_ENGTOL_pg2.htm#item7 With a part # of: TOL-SLY-91400B and some internet research I found the actual tool is made by Schley Products with a part # (variously) of SLY-91400B, SL91400B, TOLSLY91400B, SCH91400B. A simple google search should turn up the following: Universal OHC Valve Spring Compressor OR Schley Products Universal OHC Valve Spring Compressor VERSION B. The standard "beware of cheap knockoff versions" warning applies so for you or any viewers who purchase it make sure SP/Schley Products is listed somewhere as the manufacturer in the detailed description. Legit link here: www.amazon.com/Schley-Products-91400B-Universal-Compressor/dp/B004IQHRBM For the keepers see one (or more) of the various tools fabricated by All German Automotive (AGA) right here in the USA: www.agatools.com/tool/bmw-valve-keeper

Same here man, I do the same for my other favourite RU-vidr's that I cant afford to pay for their merch to keep them going. Us as a canvases should be more inclined to do it really, if you're not gonna do anything for the channel then what use of a subscriber are you? Haha Love the vids Eric, you've helped me through a few pickles and for that I'm super grateful. Keep it up brother 💪

Eric, you are amazing . The last time I did anything like that was on a "63" Dodge Dart 225 cid slant 6, back in 1970. Had to use a Chilton Manuel too , much easier. Thanks for the journey .

Great series Eric, I have done the timing chain on my Mini Cooper Clubman the other month, and last weekend it started runniing on 3. What do you know no compression on cylinder 4, so looks like I'll be taking the head off and this guide is perfect. Subbed from over in England.

I may have missed it, but...did you turn the engine over by hand to confirm no interference before you pushed the button? I can't not do it - even when I _know_ everything is perfect, I still have to check...probably because every time someone comes up with a foolproof technique, I improve at being a fool. :-P
@ericthecarguy

No. I just went for it like I usually do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In the end, it's all a video opportunity for me.

Never thought of that. In your situation, even making a mistake has a silver lining, so long as no one else is impacted by the error. Hey, if it works for you, it works for me - it's great to see honesty in this industry. :-)

Eric, I cannot thank you enough for these videos. I had a blown valve on the 4th cylinder and these videos helped me step by step to get it replaced. I didn't have the tools I needed to replace the valve, but I did drop the head off at an engine shop and they replaced the valves and cleaned it for $150. After that, I reinstalled everything using a new head gasket and followed this video to a T. I fired up the Mini for the first time yesterday, praying for the best but preparing for the worst, and she had no problems. You sir, are an absolute genius and once again, I cannot thank you enough. Hope to see you back on here again soon. Thanks again for everything you do!

Just subbed the channel. I have a 2010 hyundai genesis coupe 2.0t dohc engine the timing chain apparently has slack and the mechanic reported the valves were bent. They said that meant the engine couldn't be repaired and that i needed to pay 6k for a new engine. Could something like that happen or were they trying to flease me?

I do not suggest spraying break cleaner on aluminum. Chlorinated one specially creates a harmful gas which you breath. Try Purasolve break cleaner. At least it has lower toxicity then some others.
