How to easily remove 1 piece and 3 piece bungs from mini kegs and convert them to CO2 pressurised kegs to preserve the beer and help dispense it at minimal cost. Beer should keep indefinitely when opened using a CO2 injector.

This video has been so useful for just figuring out how to remove that useless plastic valve! Thank you

🙂 wow that is so neat, i wish the manufacturer would simply add these valves from the factory so that more people could reuse these cute kegs for any drink

I have seen quite a few videos on this subject but this is the only one which shows how to remove a one-piece bung without leaving parts inside that are difficult to remove. The CO2 conversion is so simple and cost effective compared to existing pressure systems. It also allows the keg to be used normally if you still want to.

Nice idea but would be better if you could utilise the existing bung hole in some way rather than drilling another hole (which will start to rust). Something like with the Brew ferm party star deluxe tap system.

Could you tell me where you got the co2 injector from? I haven’t found them with the setable psi.

Purchased it on Amazon, but I now use the cycle tyre inflator as I just add enough pressure to dispense the beer and don’t need the gauge. Links below. Hi! If I just poor the wort in there and add dextrose to carbonate and then dispense from the bottom tap does it come out with gas like a commercial canned lager or close to it?

Oops...pour ; ) I'm poor.

If you bottle straight into the keg with sugar it will carbonate, but there will not be enough carbonation to dispense a full 8 pints without opening the vent, this will cause the beer to oxidise. Fine if you want to drink it in one sitting. Otherwise use CO2 to stop it spoiling.

This stunt doesn't work. The lacquered steel can will rust where you've drilled and exposed the bare metal. Plus the tire stem rubber is full of nasty plasticizers and sulfur. No overpressure fault protection with that cheap import CO2 regulator; will make your keg go kaboom.

Thanks for the input. It seems to work quite well after being used round 10 times. I used food safe clear nail varnish to seal the hole and the valves is airtight so no corrosion should happen anyway. The valve is TPU rather than rubber so no sulfur is used and it is food safe. The keg bung gives way we’ll before the over-pressure situation is reached as these are commercial kegs designed with fail safe systems in mind. Feel free not to use the hack but I disagree with some of these statements. Happy brewing.

@@MrClapgun The bung plug is designed to push out from gradually increasing ambient overpressure, but you've modified it so it won't work, especially since you're adding more pressure and impulse shock than the limited factory fill. Five liters of pressurized gas is a whopper of an explosive energy if it ruptures on the seam or the weakened and corroding wall around the valve stem.

@@RichardKinch I haven’t modified the bung and it still functions as designed. What pressure did you calculate the bung would give way at, I got 3 bar. Well below the vessel pressure design envelope. Perhaps you would be willing to have a look over my calcs to see if I’ve dropped the ball.

I know little about this, but why would it be 5 L of pressurized gas? Wouldn't it be less due to the keg being filled with approximately 5 L of liquid?
@RichardKinch
@RichardKinch 2 года назад
@@rickw7903 5L of gas is the worst case. Presumably the liquid is drafted over time (not drunk all at once) and the gas is topped up to maintain pressure and carbonation. The hazard from the modification arises because there is an uncontrolled gas source, which the original factory-filled design didn't anticipate. Not unlike overfilling a tyre with an overpressured air source, which risks a deadly failure. A proper keg has a rated working pressure, plus a safety relief valve that opens well below that rating.
