Is the FJ Cruiser returning? Is there going to be a min Land Cruiser? Well, if the predictions from Japan's Best Car Magazine is accurate, it appears that the answer to both questions is a resounding "yes!" Best Car Magazine is claiming that a mini version of the new Land Cruiser 250 series is being introduced this year as the Land Cruiser FJ - a sort of FJ replacement vehicle that is smaller in scale and perhaps a bit more purpose built. Automotive Engineer David Chao talks about this latest speculation including the fact that mini Land Cruiser will be a full body on frame vehicle with actual gas or hybrid engine - no EVs yet. Let's watch and learn everything about this upcoming Land Cruiser FJ.

David, The smallest Land Cruiser is the BIGGEST Toyota 4X4 news of the year and I will bet you 2 dollars we will get it in North America. 😉 Some subscribers may be too young to remember that when introduced, the FJ Cruiser was the affordable alternative to a 4Runner. With this new Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota has the chance to once again offer a no frills, body-on-frame SUV at an attainable price. Who can say what they will do with powertrains but the 203 hp 2.5 engine in today's RAV4 would be perfectly adequate for a SUV sized like a Corolla Cross. Of course, the legendary 2TR-FE with a 6 speed manual would be even better. Unlike the recently revealed Land Cruiser 250 and GX, I hope Toyota remembers to include a ski pass through in the second row and a fold-forward front passenger seat to maximize interior utility. 🤞🤞 With Hino no longer building FJ Cruisers, the Hamura plant seems like the natural spot to assemble Land Cruiser FJs. 🤩🤩🤩

@@hawkeshotsThe bet was based on a number of earlier reports that claimed the new FJ would be built on the same TNGA-F platform upon which the Land Cruiser, GX, Tacoma etc. are built. Within a few days of this video being posted, Best Car magazine stated the FJ would be built on a cheaper platform only being used in secondary Asian markets. Having already lost 2 dollars, I have decided to quit gambling while I am behind. 😭 Although it is conceivable a compact SUV could be based on that cheaper platform and still meet our standards, I think it is far less likely. Either way, we will know in a few more months when the FJ is officially unveiled.

The motor is powerful enough but it'll be interesting to see what differential/drive axle setup the LC FJ will use since the current rav4 does not have an driveshaft to the rear. There's not a lot of info of the Hilux Champ IMV0 being used for any offroading at all.

Unless you are crazy, a small size truck or SUV is the best thing for offroading. I worked 32 years for the US Forest Service, and if I had to get somewhere where no one had been for a long time, I would get a Ford Ranger or Jeep Cherokee. (We did not have any CJs or Wrangles.) They could get though some really tight places, but they had enough ground clearance to go most places. If the road or trail was really washed out, with deep gullies, then I would use a Power Wagon because they could crawl though just about anything. We had some Tacoma rentals over the years, and I did not like to use them anywhere other than a well maintained road. Their sheet metal was so thin that rubbing against a twig would dent them.

Sorry, I go way back. As, I owned a 73 FJ40 back in 1973! A beast that can never be replaced. I know, I am old and dreaming of that return which will never happen but, one can dream. No matter how “basic” you claim a new vehicle will be, today’s vehicles are filled with electronics and “stuff” which makes it more complicated and thus prone to problems. Heck, my 73 FJ40 even had a manual choke if anyone knows or remembers what that means.🤔😂

Today's 70 Series is quite close to your FJ40 from 1973. BTW a RU-vid channel called Periscope Films posted a Toyota USA film from 50 years ago recently. You might find your FJ40 featured in it.

It was terribly unfair of Toyota to sell their 2 door Prado in every market but ours. While I would certainly welcome the 2 door 70 Series they make today, I am unsure if it would meet our regulatory requirements.

David This is wonderful news. We have a Sequoia for long travel and my wife a GX 460. As much as I would like a Land Cruiser , a mini of this would be perfect and keep us in that still roomy , economical gas /hybrid version for city. Really hope that FJ/LC mini comes to North America at a reasonable price (maybe around $30-38k)!!! I was looking into getting the 1958 LC in the far future, I like the offroading capabilities and the looks with the round headlights but for around $57k I didn't think it's worth it. Especially with the trim having cloth seats, at that point better off with a 4runner TRD offroad or Forester wilderness.

Awesome! Yes Tiny 4x4 is a must! Suzuki Samurai!, Jeep Renegade but Toyota quality level. Bring it!! BUT!!!, don't forget many of us who can not afford to buy whatever we want! You know what so many of us really want, right? Small? Subcompact sized pickup truck!!! I am still wishing and waiting. Again BIG BUT!!! is... I absolutely do not want a loaded high priced small truck. I really want what the original MSRP Ford Maverick did to the small pick up truck segment. Not a budget but a EXTREMELY budget price + Must be HYBRID! + AWD drive option on hybrid. I actually want a lowest trim! + plenty of plastics like Maverick is absolutely perfectly fine with me as long as it is designed, layed out in high utility setup. For me that is what I WANT, I don't fancy luxury, high end level vehicles. (not that i can afford it anyways)

I’m currently driving a 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara…(a relative bought it in 2007 and basically gave it to me a few years ago), so I like body on frame suvs. Would love a mini Land Cruiser if it actually is offered. I love the fifth gen 4Runner, but it is a little too big for where I live.

well, if the 250 is really just the European Prado with a different name, then this 'mini' land cruiser seems a lot more like my good old BJ42; small and built like a truck, than the 250 is like my current 1995 HDj81... the BJ went anywhere. of course, that was a 2 seater. ...I might buy a 2 seater over a 4 seater if it was built as tough. And the aftermarket lift kit, of course. If that's possible. But I would have to sell my 81...so, technically a dilema.

I'm one of those people that clings to my 3rd gen 4runner because I feel like 5th gen's are too big and like I'm driving a bank vault. The 3rd gen feels like a greenhouse with huge windows by comparison. If this thing is around 3rd gen 4runner size, I'm buying one. Although it better have a roll-down rear window.

I could see this slotting very well at the $32k-35k slot. If it was sold starting at that price, it would be Toyota’s entry-level true off-road suv., and if you could find it with no/minimal mark ups, it would likely be the most popular car in that segment. Let’s hope the US “safety and emissions” regulations don’t keep us from the fun

Agreed! The FJ Cruiser was a cheaper alternative to the 4Runner and this one needs to fill the same price slot. It should be priced on par with the base Wrangler and Bronco. At the moment, Toyota is the highest volume automaker in the US market, they have no excuse to fail to meet US standards. 😁
