As someone who likes to keep his workshop clean and tidy I found that cleaning up the lathe after a turning session was particularly tedious. The ways and lead screw are always well lubricated and adding metal chips and shavings to the mix made this task longer than ideal, not to mention the aforementioned sludge gumming up the works and generally increasing the level of wear on the machine. Watching lots and lots of videos showed me the many ways others have tackled this problem, from simple rubber sheets to concertinas and spring steel lead screw covers, I just didn't like any of the solutions on offer. What I did like were the telescopic way covers from the big CNC machines so I decided to have a go and make my cover like this. The design is fairly straight forward and the only real area I had to think about more deeply was how to mount the bearers and what kind of wipers I could get hold of. I could have gone for a more compact design but this meant attaching the bearers with adhesive or double sided tape and I just didn't trust this to be oil and solvent resistant. So I went with the minimum thickness bearers that I could fix with screws, about five millimetres, and I'm still looking for wipers lol. It worked out OK and I have only lost about 27mm from the maximum size that can be turned with the cover in place. This should be good for 95 percent of the work that gets done on the lathe, the cover can be removed for any larger diameter turnings. The covers are made from 1.6mm sheet and the bearers are made from a nylon chopping board, this stuff is very durable.
So, does it work? Mostly, yes. The only two problems are one, small chips fell into the screw holes and then got trapped between the bearers and the cover, this was easily fixed by filling the screw holes with epoxy. The second problem is that the fixing method for the cover is via magnets, so when turning steel I expect these to get buried. But forget all that, it looks cool lol, and the action is very smooth.

Your videos look very professional. With so many cinematic angles, I can only imagine the amount of work that went into capturing all these shots and editing them. Congrats for all the work!

Excellent work. Also great videoing. I have the TU2506V also. It is in bits while I'm completing the CNC upgrade design. Almost finished. I have all the parts such as motors, ball screws and electronics for the upgrade and as soon as the mechanical design is completed, then I will start making the plates, brackets and other parts for the assembly. Currently designing the X axis (cross slide) way covers. Hence why I came across your vid by googling way covers.

Thanks and glad you liked the video production. Converting your lathe to CNC sounds like a great project, hope you make videos for us to see;)

This is amazing. I just bought myself an Optimum TU3008G. You're giving me way too many ideas. I must also add that you have a very relaxed filming style. Very calming, thoughtful and intentional with every step of the video production as well as the project itself. Keep up the amazing work mate!

Just started today adding black fabric way covers (bought @Ali) to my Opti D 650. Was looking good "so far", bolted them down to some angled Aluminium brackets, mounted with some cheap Magnets to the bed carriage... Until your video popped up lol, now it's just another way cover I guess. Really nice one you got there! Now powdercoat it in RAL 7035 :).

Nice project. One thing though, you should never let a loose piece of material go free between the blade and fence. You are seriously lucky it chose to fly straight back rather than getting raised and flung at you or somebody else.

They are the most beautifully made way covers I have seen, great work! Do you mind telling me where you got those magnets, they look really strong?...

what do you think of them now that some time has passed? do you still have them on the lathe?
@awintheshed

They haven't been off except for oiling the ways under the collapsed cover.

What is that black paste you covering the bolts?

That's similar to JB weld in that it's an epoxy resin based repair product.
