In this video I show you how to make a machinist mallet , for those who do not know what it is: it is a small mallet for leveling the parts on lathes and milling machines. This is a good project for beginner machinist.
I've become addicted to machining and blacksmithing videos lately and this type of video is one of the reasons why. "If I don't have a certain tool then I'll just make it!" As someone who has no ability in these areas i am filled with envy at the people that have these skills. One day I'll work up the courage to buy a small lathe and try to learn but untill then, I'm just going to continue to just watch the vids.
it might be good to get a few projects together that primarily feature these tools to make the intended product of work if you want to, then go for it and enjoy measure twice to cut once
Great work. I just have a couple tips for you. 1. Put your flats on the round stock before drilling if you can (saves the drill corners and helps to keep the beginning of the hole from ovaling). 2. Chamfer/counter sink your holes before tapping (so you won't have to run the tap thru again to clean up burrs). Just spreading what the old timers taught me. The old ways are still better than some new ones.
@@studio1005 I forgot to add, you have an immaculate shop(from what the camera shows). I'll get mine that clean one day.....maybe.......probably not. LOL I'm still trying to put a shop together.
come one guys all this wd40 is for bla bla bla yes yes its water and fish oil we all know if you ever got into cnc you would lear most time lub is not needed for cutting its just a coolant alot of high speed cnc is 90% water and a 10% lube. this guy is doing short runs and getting decent finish cuts so lub not needed wd40 is fine
I agree when it comes to lube for carbide, but for HSS cutters......not so much. My old lathe is a 2 for 1, so I'm used to the old ways. And, didn't wd40 used to be just kerosene in a can?
I made me a version of this. The handle was a bit shorter but I use it all the time. It has so much mass and requires so little force that it is a real handy tool. Trying to indicate in a piece on a four jaw chuck needs just little nudging to get the indicator on zero. Every toolmaker should have a version of this.
started out a beginner project turning down some hex stock, then he took it to a whole 'nother level no beginner could duplicate lol. the handle has so many features you really would need to know your stuff to come out nice. many machinist hammer vids out there tho
Very nice and I like the use of Brass and Aluminum to offset each other. The only possible thing I may have done is knurl the handle because as an old mechanic with clubby hands it would be difficult for me to hold accurately. Awesome use of an arc cutter as well.
I did something very close to this in high school shop class. The best little hammer and it doesn't go a day with out use. Not trying to take anything away from you and your video. What took you maybe a day took me almost a full school year. Ever think of selling them?
FraznoFire - So I don't know whats more pathetic? The music used in the video, or you going around replying to everyones comment about the music sucking??? I think I will go with the latter. On another note, What recommendation would appeal to everyone??? Your IT!!!
IS THERE ANY WAY U HAVE BLUEPRINTS FOR THIS!?! I JUST FINISHED MACHINIST SCHOOL AND WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THIS. PLEASE MESSAGE ME BACK AND TELL ME HOW U DID THIS PLEASE!?!?!
I like it, but you could make it 7 minutes without losing any content ! maybe edit a little bit more of the tool changes also, don,t be afraid of changing camera angle:) great video :)
Wow, first video I've seen where someone actually sprays lubricant onto the cutting tools to keep them from wearing out and burning up. Perhaps WD-40 isn't the right type of cutting lube to use but it's better than nothing.
oldog damn guy, calm down. Let the man have an opinion, even if It doesn't fit you way of thinking it's still his opinion and everyone is entitled to have one, only liberal don't like things that don't fit their way of thinking
Are you trying to have sex while watching this video? You really need "appropriate music" to get anything out of what this fine gent shared? "Get off my lawn you dang kids!!"
i am an proffessional turner from germany. i know that the aerosol from WD40 is very bad for any health, and its highly flammable and its more expensive. so you have 3 reasons not to use it. But we people are free and its ouer free choice if we want to hurt us. best wishes from germany ;)
dude seriously i mean jesus. they sell wd40 in liquid form in gallon and im sure 5gallon and even larger with custom wd40 spray bottles. how many cans of the shit do you go through? buy the sprayer and the gallons in bulk and save you some dosh.
G.I customs Take the feedback, man. The music is terrible. It's the definition of bad rock. Just a bunch of uncoordinated noise for the sake of noise. There's a reason you didn't have to pay to use it. It greatly detracts from the video. Most of us who like machining enjoy the machine/shop sounds. I enjoy much harder rock than this, so don't make the mistake of thinking it's just that I have an aversion to electric guitars or something.
There are a couple who like it and many who hate it. I read every comment before adding my own. You don't have to take the feedback, but you'd be foolish not to.
I make videos, for those who are interested in the process of metal working, and not for music lovers.... I have written this before, to those who are interested will be watching and learning. Music Irritates you? Mute the sound....... Impossible to please everyone.
Nice build and cool music. It fit the tempo of the video beautifully. I'd make one of these for myself but I'm still using the one my father made way back in the early 50s. When he passed it was one of the first things I grabbed. It's one of my prized possessions and hangs in my shop right below his WWII dog tags. This is one of those things you can pass along to your kid(s), too. Put a few dings in it first and don't yell at them when they use it to crack open walnuts :) More videos, please!
Cool video, thank you for taking the time to shoot and edit it! For what it's worth, I'd like to hear commentary on the build, it'd be interesting to hear the reasoning behind some of the design choices you made.
I miss having a manual lathe around like that. All we have now at work are two $750,000 CNC lathes that they don't let many people touch. I try to make everything on my mill, which is time consuming. Great video. That WD-40 always makes for a great finish surface.
etienne nel Oh Etienne... you are such a nice guy. Guess you're one of those typical idiots who has issues with just about the entire world and makes comments hiding behind a keyboard! Sure would love to give you a chance to comment in persone lover boy! But then again, who cares what poor Etienne, abused and bullied all his miserable, unimportant existence has to say. Another day, another looser who's done nothing in his life and has nothing to contribute. What an idiot! Just can't figure out what you get out of this! Enjoy your existence!
