I think the storage unit is much more important than you think. without them everything was running off of the resource nodes making them instead of just backfilling your warehouses needs.
For now from my experience they're very much confusing the pathfinder, leading _nodes_ to infinitely stack the resource of the nearest storage. So while conceptually you might be right, currently it ruins the game unless you just use storage as a buffer from one side to another if you happen to have only one source and long path.
I can't wait to see you play modded minecraft, maybe create? or how about skyblock? or maybe some kind of skyblock with various mods that lead you to make a vast empire of machines, computers, and y'know, farms.
I think why maps will crash when you upgrade to level 2 houses is upgrading to and supplying level 2 houses requires tools. Tools require iron bars which require coal. Level 2 houses also require bread which requires bakeries which require coal as well. Unfortunately, to build a coal mine also requires coal so if your original coal gatherers, which get coal from the scattered nodes (heh, heh, nodes), run out of coal nodes, they shut down and your coal mine can't be built and your bakeries shut down and your tool maker shuts down, so your population crashes.
