just use marking tape with a permanent marker (or masking tape if the weather is going to be good) and write the measurement directly on you stake, flag, stick, etc. that way the as measured mark is at the location point, this is useful if you are trying to straighten out your swale or base your swale on something other than the natural grade of the land.

@@pauljensen4773 that sounds like a pretty neat place. There is a lot you can do with minimal input, but what you take on always needs to fit your goals. In my case, I have kept my personal homestead fairly simple so that my wife and daughters can maintain it if I'm not around. I only have chickens, rabbits, orchards and a garden.
@@thehomesteadconsultant Yes you are set up very different from me. I had children but now they are out, and I'm divorced and living alone. So, I don't have a backup team like you. It changes the strategy.
