Title should read. Tornado in Hornsby N.S.W 18/11/2013 There is no such thing as a "mini" tornado. Tornadoes are rated from EF0 to EF5. BOM says preliminary rating for this even is and EF1.
I so hate the fictitious name “Mini Tornado” - the name doesn’t make sense. It’s either a tornado or not, although it could be a microburst, but I believe this is a tornado.
Highly doubt it was a microburst since the winds were turning and lifting. But I agree - "mini-tornado" is unhelpful. Adjectives like "weak", "small", or "brief" tornado are more helpful because they still acknowledge that it's the real deal.
Well, as far as tornadoes go and how dramatic they are, this was certainly a "mini" one. EF0 is equivalent to a mini tornado. Weak or small is synonymous to mini. In fact, mini is short for miniature. Let's not get too technical.
Wow, amazing footage, you must have been freaking out, Its probably a good thing , there was no sound. There might me children watching.. Thanks for sharing..
He was most likely thinking to himself "FUUUCKKKKK SOFT TOOPPPP FUUUUUUUCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!" lol, I bet it sounded like he was rolling down a hill in a metal drum.
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed this was a tornado. Unfortunately in Australia there is a misconception that tornadoes do not occur. They do. There is no such thing as a 'mini-tornado'. Tornadoes are either weaker or stronger, their strength being rated on the EF scale (which rates the damage caused by a tornado).
Do you know what "mini" even means? It's equivalent or synonymous to short and minor. "Mini tornadoes" are essentially in the EFO-EF1 range, really. You're arguing semantics here.
I was at school just around the corner when this happened. Thankfully my school wasn't hit by the tornado, but the lights went out and we had extremely heavy rain, when we got out though we were just shell shocked that something that extravagant had happened just around the corner from us. It was both amazing and terrifying!
We only hear about the weather more because of greater communication both locally and Internationally.........The latest Typhoon that hit the Philippines is an example....If you asked the average person 60-80 years ago about storms overseas they really wouldn't have had a clue.....The average person now would say "Oh they are getting more frequent and more intense .......WRONG!......Three of the strongest and most intense storms to hit the Western Pacific in RECORDED history, hit in ONE year and that was 1957.....one of course would ask a very logical question...What was it like BEFORE accurate records have been kept???
Ah another erudite, sagacious & insightful comment...Oh sorry I used words of greater than 2 syllables...so that probably went in one ear and out the other...Mind you that would have happened anyway as you actually need brain matter to stop the sound!
You know what amazes me is that this person driving just stops and doesn't move for a while and then has a green fucking light and doesn't go. LEARN TO DRIVE.
Never seen a Light spin 180 b4 in my life on the streets of Sydney .thought they were 4 Dino Bolts holding it in place ,Unless it is tho midway up they connect like a vacum cleaner. Strange
guessing one of the pieces of tin roof made a landing on the powerlines. Which was behind the camera car but almost over the group of school kids the car passed, one kid below might be able to answer that question.
The winds in this tornado were estimated at 117-180km/h. People were injured. Some would presume that just because this was not a cyclone, it's not worth talking about. The fact is, tornadoes occur in all states of Australia - with some areas recording a higher incidence of tornadoes than others - and the more people talk about them and understand them, the better. Ignorance helps no-one.
That was nothing really..Small compared to the Willy-Willy that went through our town several months ago.It nailed about 50 houses over a 1 km path and then proceeded 32km inland. These things happen in Australia 100's of times per year except that most times they do not hit towns or cities....they have happened in Sydney before Sydney even existed...Thy have happened since whiteman arrived and they will continue to happen!!
I remember this.. it was tiny.. didn't Even slow old mate bringing me my pot. He got a video. It basically wasn't worth mentioning. Sorry it scared u ladies
HandsOverMyEyes "Strong Gust" Seriously?! Where were you when this was all over the news, reported as a tornado AND confirmed by the BOM? Dude, take your hands off your eyes and check the facts. Fudgi Games, Have a look at 1:01 onward, up in the sky, left of the camera... Granted, it doesn't look like the horrors they get in the States, but it's still there.
1:01 I'm guessing the guy driving was seeing the debris field at the edge of the tornado. Drove past that street quick smart and got out of its direct path before stopping further down the road... Just a guess.
Also at the end they sit there on a yellow line and you can't stay there or park there this person really needs to learn how to drive. I'm guessing an Asian.
