You’d think the indicator light would indicate that something is on, so it’s a weird and confusing.

Depends what it’s indicating. The function of an Indicator light is to notify of something not operating as expected or “outside normal parameters”. The check engine warning light is the same - something is not working or not working right. Would you want that “on” when everything is on and ok?

How do get the car a warm running temperature without being able to start the engine using start/stop?

I read that strart/stop wears out the motor mounts with all the thumping.

Yes using the bimmer coding you can set is as normally off in the default position. If you want to use the function then press the switch to turn it on.
