DOWNEY - A coroner's investigator today released the name of an 18-year-old man who was killed when the minivan he was in rear-ended a large truck in Downey.
He was Isaac Antonio Marroquin of Downey, said coroner's investigator Joyce Kato.
Four other people were injured in the crash on Lakewood Boulevard and Florence Avenue, which occurred about 10:45 p.m. Friday, according to the Downey Police Department.
A 19-year-old man driving a 1997 Chevrolet Astro Van southbound on Lakewood Boulevard, in the number one lane, veered into the center two-way left turn lane and rear ended a 2001 Great Dane trailer attached to a 2012 Freightliner trailer, police reports indicated. The truck was stopped in the two-way left turn lane.
The driver of the minivan and three of his passengers -- an 18-year-old man, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman - were rushed to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Marroquin, who was also a passenger in the van, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi-tractor, a 52-year-old man, suffered no injuries.
Downey police detectives asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (562) 904-2339.

The insane stress of trying to extract someone is why these guys need to be paid more money. Whether they are alive or dead. I know a Firefighter and he has PTSD from witnessing 8 years of accidents . He became an alcoholic for a while but sought treatment and is back on the job. These guys may look hard as steel, but what they see is enough to traumatize someone for a very long time, even for life.

You know I use to think the same thing. But the reality is that celebrities and athletes make more money because they have a much greater source of income... That source is the fans. Billions of ppl invest in these thousands of ppl. U think these athletes make a lot of money think about the owners of the leagues and the team owners. They literally do nothing at all. Sabrina Dugan In the USA 72% of the firefighters today are volunteers and no they don't all get great or decent pay for the amount of hours, work holidays, weekends from their family's while most folks work a Monday through Friday job 8 to 12 hours a day versus 24 hour shifts. I have been in the field for 20 years, a Paramedic for 13 of those years and 9 years as a Chief. Most city's and states cut public safety budgets first before other departments to push the population into being forced or scare them to increase taxes. It takes a calling to do this type of work for long.

I know the feeling all too well. My oldest son started as a volunteer when he was 16 or 17---he is now 36 and still a volunteer firefighter & first responder. This was his dream since he was 4 or 5 and he never let it go. He rarely talks about the gruesome things he sees, I guess he doesn't want momma to worry. 😕 Momma worries no matter their age or circumstance. So he has done this without pay & much of the time without so much as a thank you for 20+ years and loves it just as much today as the day he started. I truly believe it is a calling for these men and women. My 10 yr old grandson (his son) talks about being a firefighter too....just like his daddy. One more generation to worry about but be extremely proud of!!! We live in a fairly rural area of SC, not a big populated place like California.

greeneyes92061 ...you tell your son ..THANK YOU from us. We lived in a rural part in Nebraska when we had an awful wreck that broke both my thigh bones and Waverly injured my 3 yr old and my 1 yr old. Volunteers showed up...mafdecme stop tearing off half my face and walking around throwing ppl off my daughter.....on and on. We all recovered with lasting injuries...2/3 of my daughters brain is now scar tissue but thanks to those unpaid, unsung heroes that showed up...she graduated from high school 1 yr later than expected before the wreck....those unsung heroes...did EXACTLY the right thing in her extreme head injury case. Its been since Sept 12, 1983...but those heroes faces are what I see when I hear the words...first responder....those unpaid, unknown, unrecognized HEROES, interupt their lives to save strangers...it is indeed a God blessed calling.

This is right down the street from my house . I saw the scene for a good 20 mins . Some one lost there legs. The guy driving was Intoxicated and DID NOT HAVE A DRIVERS LICENCE. I found out after talking to a relative of the driver after the incident. The guy slammed into the back of a Semi that was in the middle of The turn lane. It was a classic case of DUI. I hope the kid driving pays his time in jail for killing his buddy. Oh and the street was very well lit at the time due to construction on the road.

I was in Fire Rescue for 15 years before breaking my back. Seeing these videos take me back and from a technical standpoint are awesome! What I don't understand is why videos cannot continue to the removal of the deceased person without having to show their face, blur it out. I was always the medic on the way to the hospital with the live victim taken out of the wreckage but never got the chance to see the end, even just. Utting or pulling the vehicles apart would be fascinating to see. I loved this video in that they showed the taking of the two vehicles apart. Thank you, finally a great video, I subscribed because of it. To those out there who haven't been in this situation from a rescuers' standpoint please don't comment about how gruesome my request is. Yes, we all feel badly for those really injured and those who lost their lives, so chill out.

@DisabledAutistic

@@LuLuLuvU As a professional RESCUER, I become a part of these families, even if for a short moment. I don't mean to make videos like my request public, I am explaining what we need to see in classes and at the station in videos to help us understand. The family's privacy is always well guarded within the professional world of fire and rescue. It would teach compassion to those that think it is just about taking a body out of wreckage, when it is about dealing with a human being in the most gentle way possible but still getting the job done. Without actual videos, those that learn techniques without added human connection tend to be uncaring, rough and may even photograph or video things to post online for shock value. Believe me, there are two very distinct and very different ways to approach handling someone's loved one and the non-emotional, non-ethical way has more weight, tipping the scales. I have helped with countless autopsies in my career and each body is treated like a person in the state office I worked in. Empathy and the desire to learn as much as possible about providing a dignified way of handling the deceased is not taught enough. Don't turn a learning opportunity into a taboo subject. By hiding things from everyone's view we aren't helping to keep emotional scars at bay, quite the opposite, we are teaching people to not understand, approach from a cold and impersonal manner, like the "body" is just a "thing" a professional has to "deal" with. I was a hospice volunteer and in that side of my career held the hands of many lonely people passing away very scared. My mission was to bring joy, happiness, contentment, and a sense of togetherness before passing. Without all of these experiences, professionals have no clue the heartache involved in someone leaving this world for the unknown and then in some cases, what the families will then go through suddenly and shockingly. I hope you understand, I explained the best way I could.

So true. 18-year-olds out at nearly 11:00 at night, probably speeding, distracted from others in the vehicle, they are just newly considered adults but they are mentally just teenagers, having "fun" that is killing them young. The human brain is not even fully developed until age 25, and they've maybe had a only a couple of years of driving experience under their belt, DISTRACTIONS are what cause accidents all the time. You must pay total attention to your driving, AND watch other vehicles around you on the road, to stay safe. When a driver just looks at the passenger to his right, in that one second, a vehicle going 70 mph advances OVER 100 FEET on the road! and it will crash into an object with 50,000 pounds of pressure on a two ton vehicle. That leaves little left but a wadded-up bunch of metal with dead people inside in an accident on the highway.

Thanks to the Fire Fighters, they are always the 1st to respond to ANY and EVERY emergency. They save so many lives and deserve a lot of respect. They worked on my daughter for 20 minutes until the got a faint heart beat. That allowed the paramedics to get her to the hospital for brain surgery. Unfortunately we lost my beautiful baby girl, 26 and a life ahead of her. Her children won't have her to see just how wonderful their mother was. The fire fighters never gave up, thanks to them we got more time to spend with my beautiful girl to say goodbye❣️💔💕

Young and not paying attention. So many lives lost because of careless driving. I had a friend who's granddaughter was killed in a car by a drunk driver at 18 and that lady was never the same. I felt so bad for her because she couldn't even get to the funeral in another state. KEEP YOUR MIND ON YOUR DRIVING AND DON'T DRINK! You may think you're sober but you are not!

We don’t do it for the money, but it sure would be nice if I could afford to put a few more presents under that Christmas tree for my kids. Proud member of the thin red line.

Yeah, it was there, and correctly placed - that is, until that full-size Chevy van slammed into it at FULL speed !! If you look closely, you can see it - the firefighter partially under the trailer (to facilitate lifting it up) puts his hand right on it.

Such respect for our first responders. No words can describe what they do, and what they go threw we don't see. On another note, I've never seen a fire department in the US have a heavy recker? That can definitely see that save lives. I'm sure it's a huge cost though :/

Im often angered at daredevils on the road. But I dont see how anyone can get a "Chuckle' out from death. A lesson may be learned to the living, but to the dead, there is no lesson. Ive been cut off from a car on the right lane after putting my signal to move right for an approaching exit, and many other senarios, and yea, i admit,I wouldnt mind seein em hit a lamp post.(sorry). But I WOULD WANT THEM TO SURVIVE IT and know that it may change their ways on the roads forever.

I understand that intoxication was the ultimate cause of this accident and fatality, but I have always felt the rear of these semi trailers should meet better impact standards. I have seen this over and over with the rear ending of a semi trailer. The vehicle always bends the bar easily and the occupants of the vehicle are impacted by the upper part of the trailer. Had the lower trailer support been more supportive to impact, its highly likely that passenger would have lived. Otherwise, these firefighters deserve all the respect. What hero's they truly are.

I once worked once in a while for my neighbor in his bar if his gal was sick. A new customer was upset and angry when off duty firemen came in and got to feeling whoppee. I asked him how "he" would feel after scrapping up the remains of accident victims, he stormed out, then came back in and apologized and bought them all a drink.
