In this episode of DIY or Buy we will have a closer look at a commercial wind turbine. I will show you how it works and how much power it can output. Afterwards I will then 3D print a mini wind turbine I found on thingiverse and test it as well in order to figure out whether it makes sense to DIY such a wind turbine or whether we should stick to the commercial solution instead. Let's get started!

Comparing both wind turbines output was fine, but while you gave a cost for the commercial, we didn't get to see an estimated cost for the diy project. A cost per watt for both for both would have been very usefull, and likely a major decesion factor for many. 😊 And lastly, a better test for 2 turbines with different blade lengths is to have the same wind blow across the entire surface area of the blade. Maybe take a box fan (or four), and make wind tunnel.

@alexanderschroter565
@alexanderschroter565 4 года назад
I think there is a disc generator (Scheibenläufer) used in the commercial unit. The problem with the stepper motor is the cogging torque of the individual steps. This force is also higher with the used gearing. I recently printed a vertical wind turbine and made such experience. On the other hand you need some kind of MPPT for a wind generator. Or just make multiple load cases. A single point of measurement is not significant for comparism between both units.

Some grease on the moving parts might help regaining some lost power as electricity, i think. And the design is mechanically brilliant but, maybe keeping it simpler and finding a way to make a lighter propeller would help a lot.

I came to the same conclusion. Wind power doesn't scale down: To be practical, it must be huge. The power produced is proportional to the cross-sectional area, so if you make your turbine twice as wide you get four times the power. It's also proportional to wind speed *cubed*, so you need to mount it at some height to get a good wind flow. Photovoltaics are linear in scale: Spend twice as much on panels, get twice as much power output.

@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 4 года назад
@@jklmnpqrst It costs less than four times as much. So the bigger you build your turbine, the better your cost-per-watt gets. The cost of building twice as big is usually less than twice as much too - the blades are cheap, it's the bearings and support that make most of the cost. The economics of wind power are just not in favor of small-scale generation. The rapid fall in the cost of wind power generation in recent years is largely just due to the introduction of bigger and bigger turbines. GE has a model with a 220-meter blade diameter! Those things are around the height of a seventy-story building.

Filament I buy is about $10 USD per killogram (so about $5 per pound). Since these don’t really need to be solid you could save some weight but even assuming it’s solid then that’s like maybe a pound of plastic. **Technically I rarely pay over $8 per kilo shipped to my door, but I also don’t care about color so if ugly puke green or fluorescent yellow is on sale that’s what I get! I have used more expensive like $50-$60 per roll as well and it’s often a pain and super picky for some reason, so I use the cheap stuff. I typically print ABS and PLA (I even got a nice kilo roll of glow in the dark PLA for $9.99, haha, I literally switched my machines parts to work with 3mm filament just because it was such a great sale, haha! Locally it’s also like $12 for a roll of any size and nearly any color (it’s the clearance rack, but they usually have like 10 rolls of a good variety), otherwise retail store mark up your looking at $17 per kilo but they have a whole rainbow gambit of colors and materials (some specialty like carbon fiber reinforced, wood or metal additive, or TPU will cost more). NEMA 17 motor is like $8-$10, so not a lot and the NEMA stepper does not make a good generator so I’d pick something else personally, but that’s roughly what it cost is like maybe $20 in total with the voltage controller and stuff (could be as high as $30).

In the buy option an output voltage of around 1.5v can be seen. In this case the loss is a bit less than 50%. At the div option a voltage of about 0.75v can be seen, witch results in about 60% loss.

Build one of your own ,you need 2 stator discs 1 for magnets 1 for coil assembly and 1 for rotor magnets.You will need axle and 2 ball bearings and make a housing. Take one of the permanent magnets used in the rotor, and measuring the distance at which that magnet just begins to lift one end of a 32 mm (1.25 inch) paper clip off the table. The optimum length of each coil from end to end is exactly the same as the distance at which the paper clip starts to lift. As of width of the coil its 1.5 times the measured distance.Smaller the magnet more thinner wire you need-thinner wire = less amperage you can use. More coils and stronger magnets you use = less speed you need . People build wind turbines like this by using drum brakes and wheels of a car.You can use round magnets or square,it doesnt matter ,they need to be N/S/N/S polarity.You can experiment and put a core inside a coil to boost effectivnes,but you will create drag-making it harder to spin propeller-which can be adressed by using transmission like pulley for example. Its cheap if you use a old wire from dead appliances like angle grinder for example ,just make sure wire is good to use,you can laminate it again by using spray paint and a rag.if there is a few spots damaged. Cordless drill and a bolt with washer welded makes a good coil winding jig.On other end use a nut with welded washer on it. Hope these guidelines help you ! Happy recycling and windmill building everyone!!!

The system in the propeller is sensible to the speed of the propeller, because when the speed increses, the swashplate will get away and will give more angle to the blades, and the wind turbine will be more efficient. It is quite normal that by activating one, the other blades don't move, because it is only there to standardize the mouvement, to give to every blade more or less the same angle, but the activator, to give angle is the wind, and not the swashplate. (Well, that's my opinion, I do not rule out the possibility that I am wrong) Other than that, good video, as usual, and good luck !

I love that people can just go "this part does not exist, let's print it". Everyone should be a cogboy, or know someone who is. The more stuff we can make on our own the better.

Seems both designs need a conductive slip ring so the turbine can freely point into the wind without getting bound up. As they are now, wind that shifts direction a lot would cause problems.

You can use Hoverboard motor for wind turbine... Which gives more pawer.

Very informative video. Back to the turbines, I think both are useless for any kind of project. DIY takes ages to build and has poor efficiency. Ready made one is also useless because its price is just prohibitive and power output is also not so great. I think that the best part of DIY one is that you really can learn a lot! Thanks for the video :)

DIY or BUY: Generator with internal combustion engine. With Maximum Power Point-Tracking. I've built one with a Nitro-Engine, a DC-Motor for the starter and a BLDC-Motor as the generator. Looking forward to the test next weekend - Certainly more fun than grabbing a cheap generator from ebay. :)

I was looking at printing the 50 watt turbine but ultimately abandoned it as no one seems to have actually got anything useful out of it, making another video for you :) Great video as usual.

If you have some experience with wind turbines, DIY is definitly the winner. But you need to build at least 3 to 4 turbines to get a good working one.

Peak voltages of motors make diode drop material. Smooth voltage from generators makes active regulation safe.

You need a HDD motor and low drop off schotkey diodes with voltage drop of 0.2-0.3 v and then an energy harvesting circuit

For me a combination would win: Waterturbine on strings, Handcrank and maybe Windpowered...

great scott, i know its a bit off putting but you should always grease the gears because if you want to last it for longer (It is literally plastic while introducing minimal if not barely any friction). The turbine spits out pretty high RPM that would wear down your device pretty fast. just keep it in mind, i live that your going back to power generators. I found them the most fun videoes

I simply took a radiator fan from a car, attached it to brushless motor from a laser printer and got average power of 10w (enough to charge phone overnight) and at Apsolute peak I got 50w For something I slapped together in one night it was pretty good wind turbine

The variable pitch is really important to it's start up and running, go back to it at some point and give it another go, maybe sort a better generator for the printed one? Great video keep them coming 👍

The DIY looks like the more fun option. It would also be customisable, in that you could use a better motor as your generator.

In a class at college that I am a teachers assistant in we have the students build a wind turbine, and then have a raspberry pi to output the stats of the turbine to a screen such as power, voltage, and rpm, we also have them make variable loads for the turbine. Next year we will have them build a drawbridge.

minimizing friction losses decreasing flywheel weight while increasing sail surface area and of course light lubrication should improve the design I'd be shooting for 3000mw or 3amp at 5v for design specs that'd allow for charging a battery pack and the parasitic drain of a device running on the battery pack as long as the wind blows also thank you for sharing the content ❤

Ive been dying for something like this. I bet it could be improved upon. I'd love to see this and the diy crank cell phone generator become the same project so you could passively charge with wind power and then plug your phone in when you would need that power
