"I Love love love how this turned out" too! Well conceived and executed. My only quibble is that I too would have sanded the cereal box card before cutting it in strips....but in essence it makes not a whit of difference. Wonderful results..............................as usual!
Thank you so much George!! I will definitely be sanding first next time. I think thats why my live stream projects always turn out so well... you guys are great at thinking of the things I don't ;) ❤
You saved a lot of money by making your own siding from cardboard ESPECIALLY since you're considering adding on another room. Watching your aging and special effects was a Bast and the final results LOOK GREAT!!!
Love your style! Everything doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s the imperfections that make our work unique. I am working on a house that was in he box for ten years. I started working on it over two years ago, and again it sat partially finished for another two years. So I understand that now that dollhouses are a work in progress!
Maybe in future, sand the boxes first or mod podge them before cutting them. Rewatching all of your Addams family videos. I am making a huge house myself and these remind me of how to do the things I want on my house LOVE LOVE LOVE Your videos
@@BentleyHouseMinis Because if you had tried to work on it any sooner, it would have turned out differently. You did it when you did it and you did it wonderfully! 😊👍❤
Great video! Just an FYI; most wax style coatings on commercial cardboard such as what you used for the siding are polyurethane coatings. Acetone strips the coating off without sanding; you need only to brush it on like paint and it will eat the glosscoat off, and the surface underneath is now inert and ready for paint. On the other hand, polyurethane is fire retardant, so it could be argued that leaving as much of it on and just scuffing the surface will leave the final project slightly more flame resistant than it was without the cardboard.
This is amazing! One question, why did you paint the whole thing black and then cover it all up? I understand why you added the siding, I just don't know why you painted first. Thank you. I'm just starting my first book nook. Very nervous lol
Bentley House Minis I mean it! You are incredible! I wish I had your talent, energy, and dedication! I binged watched a ton of your videos last night and will do so again tonight at bedtime! Can’t wait! Take care!
Well done, Aya! I could't figure out why you were covering the wood clapboards with cardboard, but the end result is fabulous. And it shows that one does not need to buy very expensive wood ones to get a great result.
Thank you Rob! I am sure that does seem strange to start out with but I liked the freedom of being able to move it around and mess it up as I pleased. The kit clapboard was just too perfect for me :D
@@BentleyHouseMinis can I ask how many layers of recycled material you used for siding? I just found an old dollhouse I'm turning into a haunted house lol.
Yes I was tired because my dog's been sick all week. Then I went to see the grandkids. Then I came home and watch your lovely video and then crafted with another group and I'm still going. I do more at 60 than I did when I was a kid. LOL happy November 1st
Please could you help me I'm looking for the very start of your amazing start of Bentley house the Addams Family house, like the size and what you made the house from like the walls the structure as this would help me alot thank you from Tara Howarth
Bentley House Minis I am so sorry, I usually read comment, I didn't and many people already suggested that. I had to lol, as I watched the following video, where you said as much. Sorry. But again... Your work is awesome!
Thank you so much! You can find several of the tours I have done so far in my Addams Family playlist. I don't have a complete one yet... just the rooms that are finished.
I did not understand the reason of painting the house black first if you added the siding on it afterwards and then brown paint. I have a house similar to this one that has no siding so just going to do your siding method on it. Thanks for showing this.
I do that sometimes in case I accidentally leave a gap in the siding somewhere... the black underneath is better than the color of the house showing through. It's probably a step you can skip if you like ;) Glad you enjoyed the video!
I painted it all black in case there were any gaps in between the cardboard slats... this way it would be black underneath and not the color of the MDF wood.
I was SO Psyched to see you finally tackle the outside of the Addams Family Dollhouse!! I think you captured the Vintage look of Chas Addams cartoons perfectly! Can not wait for the new mystery room build!!!! You're absolutely my favorite youtuber!! ♡
It turned out so cool! Even the bright colored version was awesome. Now I really want to watch Addams Family again. I only watched the movies and the 1998 tv show, maybe I should try the older one.
Wow so much more work than I would ever pursue but it looks great. Question: why paint it all black if you were just going to cover it up. Just curious.
Ummmm wow today years old seeing you use your paper cutter to cut the cardboard. Why that never clicked with me… 🤦♀️ awesome job! Such detail! Love it.
Fyi...you don't have to buy/ use crackle to get the effect. A layer of slightly tacky Elmer's white glue in between your paint shades works the same. Thw thicker the glue, the bigger the cracks. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to speed up the crackling pricess.
this comment is many years past but i will ask the question anyway! would it not be easier to sand down the wax finish while the cardboard was still in one piece off the box? i was thinking it would save time... love the video. you are very creative (and patient!) lol
I'm a new subscriber, and wow I found your channel through a FB dollhouse group, and it's amazing! I have this dollhouse as well and am currently kitbashing it with another house as well as an addition. I love seeing the way you did the siding, I would have never thought of that! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos, this is amazing!!
Welcome to the channel and thanks for the kind words!! I am currently working on the "new room" I mentioned in the video which will be a video coming up soon (I hope ;) I love to hear suggestions and new ideas so always feel free to share esp since you are also working with this kit!!
The outside of the house turned out great. I was was thinking the same thing about sanding the boxes before you cut but I understand when you get an idea you go with it at the time. BUT...you know for the next time...lol.....your daughters comment made me chuckle as I can understand her confusion, but on the other hand the color of the strips did make for an very interesting and maybe 1960's color house, it was kind of groovy....lol...love the entire project and waiting to see what you do with another room.
I plan to use the same material for the shingles so I will def be sanding pre-cutting next time. But it really didn't take too much time to sand on the house either. I liked the colorful effect too! It may show up again!! ;)
Are you going to put some scalloped shingles on the roof parts? I think that would give that part of the exterior some nice vintage-look detail. You could just cut some from the same material you used to redo the siding, or maybe you have some wooden ones from the kit.
The kit did come with wood shingles but I will be trying to make my own with cardboard. I see so many sad dollhouses with cracked wood shingles that I think the cardboard will be more durable and I can make my own shape. I will make a video on it when I get to that part. Thanks for the question!
I painted it so that if there were any gaps showing in the final process that you wouldn't see the bare wood color ;) It's also advisable to paint bare wood to seal it a bit ;)
I just can't tell how much I admire your talent and creativity. It has been a joy to watch this project come to life and I can't wait to see what's next. I wonder if this beautiful art piece will live forever in your home or if you have other plans for it.
Thank you Jenny! I do plan to take it to a few shows here and there to show it off (as time and money permits). I wouldn't mind loaning to it a mini museum (if they even wanted it) for a while either as long as I got it back eventually ;)
@@BentleyHouseMinis I usually use packaging boxes that things come through post in or any cardboard boxes that are same both sides. I tell family and friends to save them for me too. It does look colourful though before you sand it. Love your spooky dolls house....fantastic !
Thank you! I see your point ;) I still have a lot to do in the front yard and will be adding vines and explosion marks so I wanted to start a bit lighter for those reasons ;)
I haven’t got the chance to watch the video and...Oh dear!!!! This is amazing!!!!!!!! I can imagine uncle fester blowing up something at the porch. I will try this overlapping for my cottage. It turned out great. Loved the color! Loved the aged look, loved it all!!!!!! You really rock!
It looks great! Looking forward to your extra room and of course, the new projects! Your daughter's question was so adorable and funny. Something my youngest would say. Thanks for the video and Happy Halloween!
She cracked me up but also stumped me... I said "well its grey but probably used to be white but with brown wood showing through... it's complicated lol!!"
I think the sand paper was a 220 grit... I think ;) I recommend starting with some of the cheap acrylic craft paints. But then if you don't like the consistency (usually its a little watery) you can start upgrading your most used colors to a better brand. I hope that helps!
I tried this technique today, and it turned out really neat! I let a bit more brown show underneath (which I may go back and cover a bit), but the siding texture is so creepy! Thanks!
Love this idea, bought a wood kit on ebay just to do this..Never made a dollhouse , but your style of vintage shabby is my taste..so a Halloween house is in the making with your help of fab videos. Thanks again!
Thanks for all your videos! They are great. This one single-handedly inspired me to make a little front porch for my collection of Schleich cats. Not sure how to share a photo, though.
That sounds like an awesome project! You can share photos with me through Instagram or Facebook... both of those links can be found in the description of the video! I'd love to see what you make!
You are so beautiful! I love seeing your speeded up video and I love the idea of a family house siding party... might need that for the mammoth project we are about to start for our own Adams mansion!
It's wonderful to see the outside done after all these years! I followed along with your blog and now with your videos and I'm loving every moment of this journey. Adams family October has been great, you should be really proud of how much you've achieved this month. As always, I can't wait to see what comes next :)
Oh wow its definitely come a long way since the blog days lol! Thanks for continuing to watch and support. I wish I could send you some kind of badge for staying so loyal to my long drawn out project! :D
Your videos are always so entertaining and educational. I enjoy each and every one. 10 years is a long time to stay true to one project, but you're almost there.
Holy cats.....you said the FINAL video for AF October! It’s 2019 and only 1/2 way through October...I was confused! I’m finally watching the siding video I guess! This Addams Family project is so much fun!
This was great! I've got The Painted Lady from Real Good Toys, I built it a couple of years ago. I'm now in the process of completely remodeling it. Stripping paint, removing doors, windows, stairs, shingles and also sanding off the siding. I want to give it a brick exterior so the pre-fabricated stuff has to go buh-bye.
@@BentleyHouseMinis I hope so! I'm hoping to do it without spending a small fortune on pre made brick siding. I'm currently experimenting with sandpaper that I've painted a with a wine red. The brown of the paper makes it a lovely brick color and the rough texture adds a bit more realisim. It's the mortar lines that are giving me fits.
