This striking picture demonstrates the talent of the German miniaturist Edouard Stroely. He worked for the British court at the time the image was created. Although he repeated a well known idealized representation of the later George IV his portrait is atmospheric and lively.
He modelled the face lightly and delicately, accentuating the eyes, their long lashes, the fine structure of the hair, and the sideburns. The sensual facial expression, combined with the slightly tousled hair, gives the picture a dashing and romantic touch. This was likely to have been to the prince’s taste - as he was known for his extravagant lifestyle even before he acceded to the throne.
