An English miniaturist painted this fascinating portrait of an elegant woman. The representation thrives on the contrasts: the strong colours of the eyes and lips stand in attractive contrast to the pale, delicate colouring of the face. The delicacy of the body is contrasted by the wild and luscious bulk of curls, continued in the vibrancy of the feathers and the collar. The bright blue of the velvet fabric stands out next to the white of the collar and the gold embroidery.
Everything in this portrait expresses tense expectation, energy and yet a subtle restraint - in other words, simple elegance.
