In this video I share a tour of my low waste, minimal kitchen. Minimalism is different for everyone, and for me it means only having items in your life that bring you happiness and add value. I strive to have a low waste lifestyle so in this video I share many of my low waste kitchen swaps as well. Thanks for watching!

••• A LITTLE ABOUT ME •••
At the end of 2018, my husband and I quit our jobs, sold our yoga studio and 90% of our possessions and moved into our 1969 VW bus. We spent 18 months traveling the globe exploring, rock climbing, adventuring and eating delicious vegan food along the way. We recently settled in Joshua Tree, CA with our pup Gypsy, and have been adjusting to a minimalist life in a house.

Your kitchen is lovely and spotless. I love that your dad made you a cutting board and your sister gave you that mug. Those items are priceless.

Regarding dog food: I have been making my own dog food to supplement dry. It is better for the dog and cuts down how often I buy dry food. I save all of my dog-friendly veggie scraps in the freezer (carrot and celery and potato butts, cabbage stalks or outside leaves, green bean ends, etc), and I put about 2 cups in a pressure cooker (crock pot works too) with chicken legs (if I can find it farmers market great, if not, I buy organic humane at costco in bulk). I cook it down until the meat falls off the bone, pull out the bones, and store in the fridge. Then, I cut dry food in half with wet. This lasts me about 2 weeks. Hope that helps/ gives you some ideas.

I love this. I just downsized from a house to a cottage that is over one hundred years old. Which means I have no closets. And no upper cabinets in the kitchen. I’m going nuts trying to figure out what I actually need and don’t need. I just finished my dresser. It’s amazing what you don’t need, but you think.....well.....just in case. NO!!! No more just in case! Lol camping gear is my biggest weakness. I am going hiking in Havasua this summer and I am already checking over the gear. Lol. Thankyou so much for putting things into perspective for me. Your kitchen is a dream. ☮️💕
@AWanderingEye
@AWanderingEye 4 года назад
Likely camping gear duplicates what you have for everyday. Try using it instead of what you think as "household use only". That might help sort things out. Unless you go camping and have to leave house fully outfitted...

For your soap you could either make by crochet or buy ethically on etsy a soap saver you put it in the soap saver when the chunks get smaller so you can continue to use until its all used up and its easier then trying to pick up the tiny sticky pieces.

🤗Like I know you don't like the layout of your kitchen, but I legit love that kitchen the cabinets are amazing and with just a few upcycling you can organize that really simple, so yes I love everything about it thank you. Oh yeah some human organic foods can be eaten by dog's so yeah I'm looking into that too.

I don't have any thoughts on low-waste dog food (we just buy it in bulk), but I do make treats myself - peanut butter, oats, and whole wheat flour. Mix, add water to make a paste, then form into treat-sized bites and bake at 350 until dry. I keep them in the freezer and take out what we need for a week at a time.

Silverware: maybe make wooden dividers that fit snuggly in the space?
@AWanderingEye

Spices: I reuse jam jars that I refill at coop bulk. Plus uniform negative not immediate. I bought cheap kitty litter trays that work like drawers. Each holds 20 jars, I currently have about 50 different spices. Might declutter the full ones we haven't touched in a while. Store 2 bins high, alphabetically with labels on lids.

Terrific and inspiring kitchen tour! For spices we use little turntables. For tall bottles with use a single layer turntable and for regular spice bottles we have double-decker turntables. They work like a charm and they make things easy to see and find.

As for ur doggie’s food, make it you’re self! My mom and I make our doggies food at the beginning of every week and they love what they get. It’s usually a rice, turkey burger, and veggie mixture that they can’t get enough of. Their coats are beautiful and sleek, they’re noses are nice and moist, and their stools are healthy :)

I usually make homemade dog food per Dr Becker’s guidelines, using a vitamin mix (meal mix) to add to the food, I keep Honest Kitchen on hand for times I can’t or don’t want to make food... camping, traveling etc..

For treats, there are a lot of options which are basically just "take human food and cut it up really small". Like, I use chicken, cheese, beef, etc. Just make sure the food is safe for your dog and that they like it! I also like to make my own and you've got a vitamix so it'll be super easy! I make these all the time as I'm a dog trainer and they're way cheaper and usually more valuable than store-bought treats. Here's my go-to for dog treats: Take some leftover meat (or like a can of tuna) and blend it with a bit of water. You'll want about the amount that a can of tuna would provide. You can also use peanut butter or similar. Add in one egg and blend Add in flour of whatever type you want (I find that tapioca flour actually works really nicely and the treats don't crumble that way) until the mixture resembles thick pancake batter Spread the batter into either a greased mold or onto a greased cookie sheet and bake in a 350F oven for around 7-10 minutes - it's done when it's no longer wet on the surface. Then cut into tiny pieces! They do need to be refrigerated. For an extra special treat, take the container of treats and then drop in some fish oil and shake around. It reeks, but the dogs LOVE it. I really like using a mold - I have one that makes little semi-circular treats and that means that it's super easy to get those zuke's sized treats so you can get a lot of reps in your training without the dog becoming super full and I don't have to cut them up. But that's adding something to your kitchen - worth it for me because I go through tons of treats, but maybe not for you! These treats can also be frozen, so you can make a big batch and just take them out of the freezer when you're done. Sadly I don't have many suggestions for you on the plastic-free dog food. I've not come across any and the only way I think it can be done is for you to make your dog's own diet - but proceed with caution! You really need to make sure your dog is getting all the proper nutrition or they can become sick. Some options are to feed raw which has its own risks (primarily that because your dog is eating raw, there's bacteria - this is why most vets are opposed to raw as they also must factor in human health) or a cooked home meal, but in both cases you really need to educate yourself and talk to actual vets - there are so many people in the pet industry who claim to be a nutritionist when they're really not.
@RebeccaSisson

Thank you so much for all the helpful information! I'm definitely looking into making my own dog food, I just want to make sure I know enough about the nutrition she needs first.

In the UK we have Harrington's pet food, comes in recyclable paper bags, also Wagg too. If you have either of these brands over there. Your home is coming together nicely now, wish I could have less, your kitchen reminds me of when I was just starting out in my first home, good basics, it's good to just have what you use, and add in anything you find you need later if need be. I truly use a lot of my things, but you have inspired me to take a look at having another clear it, I particularly like to collect a lot of mugs 😊

You can make your own doggie food and goodies but I would speak to a vet when changing food. Normally you would not change a dogs food if they are eating properly, also you should "ween" them off of the food they're on, slowly adding the new food to avoid tummy trouble. Your kitchen and home is beautiful...a sense of peace!

Well I buy the biggest bags of dog food I have two 50lb dogs. Personally we do a 47lb bag of dog food. As far as dog treats you can make them. :) make dehydrated sweet potatoes for my dogs they love them and so do I. If you ever plan to feed raw or make your own food do not do so unless you contact a Veterinary Nutritionalist to ensure that it is a balanced diet. Also a little tip make sure you introduce teeth brushing so that the pup doesn't suffer from any periodontal disease in the future. The best medicine is prevention.

Hi Rebecca! I live in Germany and can wholeheartedly recommend Veggie Dog by Green Petfood - their dog food comes in a huge paper bag instead of plastic, and they also have vegetarian options, if you are interested in it. My dachshund loves the 99,9% vegan food (they have two options), which we discovered by accident, as I was also feeling guilty about the plastic waste. I am not sure if they ship to the US, but they can be ordered through Amazon for example as well, so maybe. You can find more information here: www.green-petfood.com/
