Good stuff Pye. You can see what distinguishes photographers from youtubers. 35mm, composition, light, great posing versus 85mm 1.2, blur the background and you're done.

When I was taking photography classes back in the early 90's all of the students including myself used a 35mm film camera and one lens. That one lens was a 50mm lens. I used a Nikon FM2n and a 50 f/1.8 and learned photography that way. It's 2021 and I'm using a Canon 5Ds and a 35 f/2.0 IS USM, I've discovered after owning many lenses that the 35 is all I need, it does everything I need to do plus it has IS which is awesome!

I have to say, even though I'm not the greatest fan of your finished picture look (colour / exposure preset wise), so yes I am watching it with a critical eye and applying my own preferences, but ... your photographic handcraft is so amazing! I can only hope to be up enough to integrate all this knowledge and improvisational skill into my own photography! Kudos!

Very nice and great presentation Pye! The great thing about Photography aside from Lighting is playing with angles, you did very good at showing how can one make what is available to work its best. Thanks ADORAMA for having videos like this on your channel to helps us with all the great Gear you have available at your wonderful store!

I usually end up shooting from light into dusk, so I bring my flash with me. But my general rule is to use natural light until you can’t, then break out the flash.

Could anyone experienced tell me why some of the photos seems so dark before the retouching? Shouldn't they be slightly brighter in-camera when you take them?

Wow! Your compositions are phenomenal! When you saw RAW SOOC, you literally mean unedited straight out of the camera, correct? Not even slightly touched one bit?

Just found this video... I have to say I always enjoy your videos... and so many of the concepts I use you suggested... the only difference for me is I use a single 85mm rather than a 35mm, but that is simply personal choice... thanks again!

this is a greaT task! I have being walking with my camera and 2 lenses, a 20 mm and 50 mm for my APS nikon and it has being great challange and as mention, you do more pictures and work faster. I come from the 35 mm film era so a my first lense was a 28 mm so I am at home when working with the 20 mm (30 mm in APS-C) .... Thanks for the video! love them!

In the late 1960's to the mid 1970's, I used 35mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.8 Nikkors on Ye Olde Nikkormat FTN. I added lenses as needed, though the 90-230mm f/4.5 Soligor was slow, unsharp, flare-ridden, etc. The 55mm f/3.5 Micro-Nikkor was a much better choice.;)

Excellent tutorial, yet again, Pye! Question: would using a small zoom (i.e 24-105mm?) defeat the purpose of this exercise or would you ever suggest it for a 'One Lens Challenge'? I have an 85mm f1.8 prime but that sounds like it would have its own challenges. Thanks in advance and continued success!
@pasty_film_journey
@pasty_film_journey 3 года назад
I don't think so. You might get 24-105mm zoom range, but you'll lose the aperture and the ability to get out of focus areas as well. So you'll still have a compromise there

Well, also I think we sometimes can reach an understanding, that owning lots of lenses, etc, does nothing meaningful for the craft. Having owned and used so many (formats, lenses, etc) over 40years, I now simply use one camera, a very fast wide (EFL 30mm) and one very fast long-ish std. (EFL 64mm) lens. The 32/0.9 gets used the most, prob. 60-70% of shots. Selling my excellent, but superflous equipment has collcoincided with a big jump in the quantity and quality of my photography. Worth a try, yes.

Was the better exposure on her also down to there being more dark objects in frame (trees) and in the dark exposure the background was a lot brighter hence the camera under exposing ??.

Really well done; I've honestly struggled with 35mm portraiture and this was really eye-opening as to the possibilities it holds. Question: are the slightly angled sidewalk and street lines in the background scene #4 an issue? I've heard some portrait shooters say they do matter while others say the model's orientation carries more weight so that can be ignored.

Proactive photographer yes. The bush scene is a no go my 2 cents the lights on at the top edge of the bush create a split off her head disctrating I feel. Pronounce Split horizons at shoulders and heads have always been avoidance in tradition old school photography no can do! Tight crowded look sorry I call it as I see
