Random tip: my friend puts “winter clothes” on one end and “summer clothes” on the other end so she can just swap them out and turn it around using the same bin without having to relabel all the time.

I struggle with this as well. I always want to toss them. But then i remember how many times saving them has saved me loads of time and $$$. (30miles to the closest small hardware store, 80 to a big box). My solution was to get an extra of the bins my husband uses in the garage. Hardware is in ziplocks by type. Alls nails, screws, nuts, bolts, washers, hinges, etc goes into this bin in their ziplock bags or small containers they came in. If I meed something for a project or repair, I go to the the bin before the hardware store. Many times I already have what i need and bc i used the same tote my husband already has, it fits right on the shelf in the garage.

I've been decluttering since 2020 and I've seen a big difference now that I get rid of containers. I just got rid of laundry baskets in every bedroom. We now have a divided laundry basket for everyone and a laundry basket for my husband's work clothes. Now I'm not overwhelmed by laundry all the time. I've just started a new rule that clean laundry cannot go back in a laundry basket once it's folded. It has so be put away, right away.

We also get overwhelmed with winter inventory, so a few years ago I bought some of the vacuum sealed storage bags at the Dollar Tree. That helps compress the winter wear and keep it more categorized. There are 7 in our household, but I can now get all that winter gear in just 2 totes.

Great transformation! I love matching containers, just can’t justify the cost at the moment. I love how containers set the boundary of what you keep from season to season or year to year. Would a few of those plastic tubs that are left over replace the cardboard boxes in your food storage area? Not sure if it is true, but I’ve read that critters like cardboard. I’d also stick the stack of paper goods in a tote, at least for the bottom, in case of water. I grew up in a house where the basement often had water so protecting what was on the floor was always a concern.

I’ve been decluttering, sorting, container-ing, and labeling in our 2,000 sq ft basement. It’s a semi-finished basement without finishing touches, so it gets used as office, workout zone, rec room, lounge zone, and storage. It’s all one big open space, no dividing walls, so EVERYTHING is visible. Ugh. My personal things, and things used by all the family are pretty small. But the university-age daughters’ and the husband’s things are overwhelming! I’m 56 and husband is 62, and I am in more of the Swedish-death-cleaning mindset, but mostly, I don’t want to be corralling, inventorying, and organizing so much stuff. My motto is, “Will it fit in the Airstream?” to determine its value to me. I don’t even have an Airstream, 😂, (yet) but it keeps me moving toward a goal of less stuff, more energy and mental bandwidth for other things in life!

Oh my gosh, Dawn! What a difference!! This video was SO inspiring, thank you!! I have the world's crappiest basement, so I reallllllly need to get down there and rework everything! I have been DREADING it, but you have just given me the hope I can do it!! Thank you!! Sending a big hug from WI!! (And you're right...stillllll winter-ish here, too!)

i'm still in the process of helping my parents declutter their hoarder garage. we made massive progress last weekend and i am just hoping the garage will look close to this! can't wait to get to the part where I can get shelves and bins to organize it all but first we have lots of decluttering to do still! 😌

Reading this, I thought you were describing my basement. Unfortunately we are not allowed to declutter things that are not ours… otherwise I could have made a bigger difference in it - because I can’t access my clutter right now.

I feel you! Our basement was like that until I started digging into it. You can do it, I promise! Remember to take mental breaks when your brain fuzzes over from constant decision making. One thing that helped me (this might sound crazy) at the beginning was each delivery I made to donate I envisioned that as the space I freed up and smiled all the way home. :-)

Id love to see a hardware and house tools organization. I hate how messy mine is its all thrown in a shelf in the hall closet in random size boxes and containers. I've thought about doing a peg board or lattice with hooks maybe in the closet or basement but im not sure if I'd get sick of it or not. It would make getting tools handy though. Ive got painting stuff, tape, random hardware or electrical and tools light bulbs etc. Looking for ideas!

I am racking my brains about tool storage (I am a "solution nerd")... My husband doesn't use the shed for the actual DIY jobs. He only stores them there but alot of the tool storage ideas need to be both tidily organised and portable... or else the shed end up being really disorganised... (work in progress). G Ire

Great tips Dawn! For canned and other food storage, I mark the 'best by date' on the item with a Sharpie and rotate so the oldest is up front. I put flour, rice, pasta, beans, oats, etc. in recycled half-gallon and quart jars, label with name, date, and rotate those as well.

Dawn, that was an awesome transformation! It’s so pretty to look at now! 😍 I absolutely love what you did for the kids winter bins inventory - BRILLIANT! 🌟I was just thinking that if it works well & you will be reusing them, you could reprint them and either laminate or put them in sheet protectors. Your chalkboard tags are gorgeous! The painted floor completes the look. Now it’s a much happier place! Job well done! TFS 🥰 TIP: Sharpie marker ink wipes off easily when covered first with a dry erase marker, or with hand sanitizer (going back to the checklist idea 🤣)

This was one of the FIRST videos I watched from The Minimal Mom, about a year ago. I sent it to my husband and it made a positive impression on him. I've been decluttering for decades but have become a minimalist in the past year. Our house is so delightful and our basement is progressing! I recently told my husband that the chalkboard tags were too expensive (in Walmart they were $0.50 each!) and I've learned that I can put clear tape on the bin and write on it with a wide black Sharpie. If I change what's in a bin, there's no erasing, just pulling off the clear tape!!! I change my linens and decorations twice a year (our bedroom color scheme in spring and summer is blue and white; in fall and winter it's burgundy and dark green), so my bin labels change twice a year. But Amazon has the chalkboard labels for $0.18 each, which is much more reasonable! Maybe I'll get a gift card for Christmas or my birthday (January) and get matching bins and/or chalkboard labels.

Another great video! My tip for you is to purchase a small box of 8.5" x 11" clear sheet protectors and tape a sheet protector to the inside of your storage container. Then you can easily slide a page in and out, as well as replacing them if you change how the container will be used. It will save time and tape since you won't have to re-tape the page every time.

You are so lucky to have a basement. I don't have an attic or a basement or a garage and my closet space is my body with right arm straight out. My cupboard space is very tiny. But then again, I live in 440 square foot apartment. But now I know where folks are storing stuff, BASEMENTS. I was like...do minimalists just rebuy things or go to the grocery store every day or do they just own 5 shirts, but the secret is a basement. Aha! I actually way lots of different RU-vidrs who live up north and they have basements and attics in their homes. But for 6 people, that is looking really good and amazing.

It’s not a look, it is a true system that if maintained, brings more peace and order in running a household. It also prevents duplication and breakage, less consumerism. I have well used the same system for decades in my basement. It has paid for itself many times over. Plastic can be recycled in a zillion ways. She can sell or donate them to people who will be very grateful to use them. All things being equal, individual people are a resource that are not renewable. I love watching women supporting women in finding and sharing home solutions. Families age very quickly.
