These videos are FINALLY managing to get some music stuff inside that was always being a pain. You explain simply but it's all very correct and precise. Never a confusing sentence. Great, man, thank you very very much!
+Lorenzo Tosi Also, it's a very pleasure to follow, no stupid faces and shit, examples all the time..all great! I really hope you will do more "how to write music" going into all the modes, giving examples of a full song, everything! :D \m/
For some elaboration on why its called "natural", a natural minor scale is constructed out of the same notes as its relative major scale, but starting on the major scale's 6th degree. E.G. in the key of C and A minor respectively, C D E F G A B A B C D E F G Likewise, with, say, an A major and F# minor scale A B C# D E F# G# F# G# A B C# D E I hope this gives some clarification, as michael sort of skimmed over that a bit
A lot of videos just seem to regurgitate music theory and try to make you memorise them, but I find your videos a lot more helpful because you use great examples to illustrate your points. I hope to understand music theory better so that I can play the guitar rather than memorise songs.
I feel its much easier to understand it when its being shown in a straight line like he laid it out. Also using a keyboard as opposed to guitar, the scale somehow seems to make more sense visually.
I have been a music producer for four years, and watching your videos made it easier for me to try new genres. I started with only making electronic music, but thanks to you I can now make classical and jazz songs!
TheKKCody0824 definitely dude, it gives context to what you’re already doing and allows you to push boundaries in genre, emotion, everything. You learn to rules to break them🤘🏾
can u help me with something . in maksim godfather theme (original video) , on 1:41 - 1:43 . what schale he is using . im searching it for years since i dont go to class . pleaseeeee
I now realize I've been naturally drawn with my music towards the melodic minor sound and also know now why in my head it felt so preferable over the natural minor. This knowledge makes it a lot easier for me to play and move around with these minor scales. Thanks a lot, very well explained!
Amazing video! Can't believe this is 7 years old haha. I tend to be more visually oriented and those visual representations for the scales are incredibly useful. Thanks so much!
Your videos are amazing man. I can't believe I am only now discovering them. I have been asking myself some of these questions for a while and the way in which you explain things is so damn simple. Thank you very much for your work, it does not go unappreciated.
I have to leave a comment although I feel I am repeating many others here. To be able to give such clarity and insight into these age old subject matters, you are an exceptional teacher and most of all, someone who truly live and breath the subject. There are many good teachers out there but for me, you stand as the best. Thank you so much for enlightening me, almost 60 now, who plays a bit of guitar and piano.... music has a completely different dimension and meaning now for me after watching your music theory videos. These are 7 to 10 years old but as many have said before, they will be timeless treasures to anyone who wants to learn music. Thank you .
I’ve been a guitarist for 36 years and no one ever explained the “whys” behind the minors. Thank you for this tutorial. Very informative and well explained.
Natural minor sounds fine. There is a LOT of traditional Irish/Scottish music in the natural minor, plus various other modes. It sounds centered to me.
***** I'm not saying better or worse. But if you use the word "colourful" to describe using more of the musical palette then it's fair to say that jazz is more colourful. The word chroma means colour. More use of the chromatic scale adds colour
I love music and I've tried learning on my own and looking at youtube videos for help and nothing has ever made more sense than this video, I subbed immediately. You're a very gifted teacher!
This is awesome! Before this video I didn't get it so I was going to memorise them off by heart and hope for the best, but now that I actually UNDERSTAND the how's and why's I feel more stable with my knowledge. Thank you!
I love you videos. I have been playing music for decades, and I have never truly understood the theory. You are finally explaining this material in ways that make sense to me.
I got my introduction to piano during my first year of college in 1957. I memorized the 3 versions of the a-minor scale from the Diller-Quayle lesson book. This all makes sense, and confirms what I learned way back then. Oh, but there's just one thing -- what the hell does "cheezy" mean? Do you dislike having cheese on your takeout sandwiches? I guess it means common and trite. I play the 12 major scales with left, then right hand almost every day, followed by "Fröhlicher Landmann" (Schumann).
First time I watch this video a long time ago. it was a bit confusing on how to use it. But the second time I watch this I mean now it's easier to understand. Thank you !!!
Hey Michael. I'm kind of a novice when it comes to music theory, but what drew me to this video is that I was listening to one of my all time favorite official video game soundtracks, Kingdom Hearts 2. So at this time, I already had the knowledge of major and minor keys/chords, but this was BEFORE i had the knowledge that there were actually 3 TYPES minor scales. Before this video I was only really familiar with natural minor. So there's an instrumental song in the game named "The Corrupted", and I was trying to identify it's key. It sounded like it was in both D major AND MINOR, at the same time as it made heavy usage of the D major chord with some pitch changes in the song. This grinded my gears for the longest and it was very confusing! After experimenting on my keyboard for a bit, I managed to discover the harmonic scale by accident, and realized that it's usually the scale used by a lot of Egyptian songs. I wanted to know more about why the song sounded the way it did, so i did research on minor chords, then encountered this video. You were conveniently using D minor scales rather than C and D is the same key of the song that brought me here in the first place. However, the thing is that the song does NOT fit the mold of either the harmonic or melodic scale. I discovered that the scale of the song is: D Eb F# G A Bb C D So I was wondering if there's a certain name for this type of minor scale, or is it unidentified? Another thing I noticed is that just like how the harmonic minor scale was commonly used in Egyptian songs This unidentified scale seems to be used in very upbeat, fast tempo, Spanish, matador-esque songs. Very strange but interesting. If you do see this, thx for reading and your video was very well put together, educational, and intriguing! :D
Finally got it, thank you! Quick question: I'm playing guitar and there is this thing (I hope) called "phryigian dominat" which is basically a harmonic minor that is played in a different key then the root node. Do you have a video where you explain why this is (and why it sounds so damn tasty)?
*Phrygian Dominant. Also, it DOES exist! It's the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor. I have a joke about it, too! However, Melodic Minor and its modes are WAY better than Harmonic Minor and its modes. Here's the video that started the Phrygian Dominant joke. It's on my "memez and jokez" playlist, and the intro is HILARIOUS!!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aCZezZf9bi0.html And by the way, it most likely sounds good to YOU, because of the augmented second that's in all of Harmonic Minor's modes. But to me, that, the fact that it's a mode of Harmonic Minor, and the fact that it sounds "exotic", like it's from some dumb other country (I'm racist), is why I don't like Harmonic Minor or its modes.
think this is the best class regarding minor scales and english is not even my first language. Not sure if because in other classes I was not 100% concentrated or even 100% ready. Anyway, you got the cheers mate, very nice explanation!
How about the egyptian/new Zealand #5 bb7 harmonic/ melodic secondary dominant sus4 fusion scale?! (Can you imagine dropping THAT in at band practice ?!!! -if only I'd not made it up and it was real lol)
I am "drunk" with musical knowledge! You put a smile on my face. You are the best drinking buddy....er.... music teacher on the net. I fall down.....er.... I bow down to you! Thank You:)
I love going amongst different kinds of videos and seeing various communities of people by reading the comments. Over here we have the music lovers (for example).
I hit like button bro Bcoz your explanation worth it. Such a great video on scales. First time I properly understand what is scale and how it works. Thanks for pro class
you are an amazing teacher,I learned a ton and it was extremely simple. thanks so much, also D major/minor are my favorite to play so I'm going to be able to add more variation knowing the purpose behind the melodic and harmonic scale
Excellent lesson, like the comparison and the differences between one another how it resolves, comes at a time when I was trying to figure it out, thanks a ton 🙏🏽👏🏼😊
The Dorian mode always sounded more natural to me, because it doesn't have the b6. But I can see how thinking in classical terms you would want the relative minor of the I chord.
