That scene in the elevator when Colin Farrell confronts Tom Cruise about drugs and the alarm goes off right after he says I don't hear a red ball or whatever....Farrell's subtle acting in that moment is SOOOOOO GOOD!

Just watched it. This is easily one of my favorite action movies I've ever seen. The action scenes are relentlessly paced, as well as being both well-choreographed and filmed. The characters were all really interesting and fleshed out. The story was really complex and clever. The film was dripping with creativity and the writers convey this world flawlessly. There isn't copious amounts of exposition like the Last Airbender, nor do we get barebones information and in turn have no idea what the hell is going on like Warcraft. I'll definitely be watching this one again.

I just watched this last night for the first time. There are little things that I would tweak with the pacing and how the story plays out at the end. But overall this is such a well written movie, I really enjoyed the concepts in it and how almost all of it was executed. Also surprised me how funny the movie is. Tom Cruise running after his eyeballs was hilarious.

Was it a happy ending? When Tom Cruise is put into the prison capsule/tube the last thing the weird prison guard says is “ they say you have visions, that you life flashes before your eyes. That all your dreams come true”. So, did everything suddenly just go perfectly well or was he in the capsule the whole time with his dreams coming true?

I recently saw the anime Psycho Pass. It put me in mind of Minority Report. Obviously there are important differences. In all ways, it is not at all truly comparable. But there is enough there that I feel that if you loved one, you could most likely really enjoy the other.

A fantastic anime makishima is one of the best villains In Anime ever. He's intelligent, cunning,and skilled all the traits that make a villain great.to add on he has a look that's menacing but can draw you into following him.its just a beautifully written anime
@Rainefaelyn
@Rainefaelyn 9 лет назад
+Jacob Bechtel Agreed and what I also found fascinating was that underneath all of that, there was something quite pitiful about Makishima. Which was beautifully showcased within the characters motives. His drive; While quite brilliant. Was also pathetic. But not in the traditional sense. I thought he made quite a good mirror for Akane Tsunemori and a great foil to Shinya Kogami. I couldn't help but appreciate the universe of Psycho Pass. Akin to Orwell's 1984. In that it's focus goes deeper than skin deep and shows something that could be taken as a cautionary tale. The ugly cost of wanting a cosmetically beautiful, peaceful society. Which; no matter how successfully it functions. It is in essence, artificial and flawed. Even grotesque. I loved the way this is highlighted with the artistic themes and imagery. At least that's from my perspective. It is (as you said it best) "just a beautifully written anime"

I was kind of hoping he'd do Munich. I feel like Munich is one of the best Spielberg films (post Jurassic Park) but it doesn't get much attention. Minority Report is a solid choice though. I liked the bleached negative effect, but the scene where they end up in the car manufacturing plant, the film gets a blurred effect, similar to the one used towards the end of the D-Day battle in SPR that I always wondered about. In SPR it made sense because these people were at the end of their ropes, stressed beyond human limits having just faced death head on. In Minority Report, it was just an action sequence...

The most confusing part when you try to analyze it is how were the pre-cogs able predict that Anderson was going to kill Crow. It very plausible who Anderson's boss was able to get rid of Agatha's mother, it makes total sense to erase her Minatory Report as if it was déjà-vu. At the same time the killer of her mother had to kill her in a very similar way the original person who was paid to kill her that was prevented by the Precrime team. If Lamar failed to kill her in the similar fashion he could have been implicated in the murder himself. But it least that part is still plausible but the main question again is how can precogs predict Anderson will kill Crow if Anderton didn't even know Crow. The only reason Anderton went to that apartment was because he saw the information how to find Crow from precogs' prediction. So it's a question of chicken and egg. What came first? How can they predict he was going to do it if it was not premeditated? You're really doing down the Rabbit hole with this question and maybe the only logical explanation people can answer it it's just the movie logic.
@MovieTimeWithMT
@MovieTimeWithMT 3 года назад
@@sergeikhripun I think the precogs predicted Anderton killing Crow based on Crow eventually contacting John about having kidnapped his kid. But when John contacted the old man from that car the old man probably called Crow and said he already knows where you are dont call him.
@sergeikhripun
@sergeikhripun 3 года назад
@@MovieTimeWithMT Anderton didn't know that that the set up for him to kill Crow on the basis he was a child molester/abductor who was responsible for his son's death. He only learned about that when he walked into Crow's apartment to see the pictures of kids lying all over the bed which Dany Witworth called an orgy of evidence. What if Anderton didn't want to go through that at all. If he wanted to prove his innocence, he could just lay low for a few days when the precogs predicted he was supposed to kill Crow. If he didn't kill Crow then that would obviously show that Precrime doesn't work and he was innocent. The only thing that makes sense is that Lamar could have falsified the precogs' visions which would have been extremely difficult as well because the pictures from previsions happened pretty much exactly what happened in the Crow's apartment. Also, the movie implies that those visions from precogs were genuine. So we are back to squire one.

There is a huge plot hole in this movie. Stop and put yourself into the mind of the antagonist, the guy in charge of pre crime. How exactly did he frame Tom Cruise? Well, he hired a desperate man to hide in some random hotel room with a bunch of pictures with kids, that's it! How did he know Tom was going to find him??? Now I know what you're thinking "Uh, this movie is about predicting the future, and he found out all this information from the precogs". I guess that technically works, but if you really think about it, you've created a paradox in logic. He found out this information about his future self stumbling upon this man, but again, he found out about the man from the precogs, who predicted Tom finding the man, whom Tom found out from the precogs, who predicted Tom finding the man ...and on ...and on ...and on ...my head hurts. See? The whole story line is a paradox in logic. There is information that appeared from nothingness.

Minority Report is one of my all-time favorite movies and ignited my love of sci-fi (and dystopian societies). I remember getting the VHS when I was 11 and replaying it over and over, anxiously waiting for it to rewind in the VCR rewinder. As the years went by, I saw parallels to the real world, even some were pointed out by my grandma, who knew I loved this movie so much: driverless cars, gestures to control phones/computers, flexible screens, personalized ads, voice-controlled devices, and smart homes. It's a future that fills you with wonder and fear at the same time.

Definitely a good movie. But it still bugs me EVERY TIME, that Pre-Crime never revokes Anderton's clearance. The movie focuses on a society driven by identification and technology. So wouldn't they shut down his access the second he became a fugitive? Yet he's able to gain access to get Agatha, and so does his wife even after John is jailed. Such a HUGE plot hole. But overall, I still love the movie though.

I disagree with the "Spielberg happy ending". I reckon it maybe one of his darkest ending. Spoilers: We always see John Anderton running afraid of the unknown events leading up to a certain event. He is always being chased by someone never resting, never stoping. In the scene where John Anderton goes to the jail chro sleep chamber where the manager/ guy who runs it is playing the accordion tells him about the chro sleep. You believe you are in reality but you are only dreaming. He sees people's dreams by accessing there brains like he did with the murder of Ann Lively but the events where mysteriously deleted. The last shot before the "happy ending" where his ex wife is talking to Lamar and putting his bow tie on and she's curious he is being put in his chro sleep and we see it him enter and it cuts to black. What if the entire third act was him playing the events out in his own mind thinking of the best case scenario where his free and re connects with his ex wife and starts another family. What if the reality is that he is castrated like the suppose murder of Ann Lively was. All evidence points to John Anderton killing Leo Crowe. No one suspects Lamar of anything as he's a top government official, no evidence points to him until Anderton gets him to confess. Lamar kills Danny while pre cog was shut down and frames Anderton by using his gun and everyone suspects him of the past relationship and the murder of crow. It's just my theory of how Minority Report ended, it's so open to discussion that's Spielberg at his best

YES!!!! YEESSSSSS!!!! I've been praying that you'd cover the Bond movies in a series retrospective! I completely agree with your assertion that Spielberg has had trouble with the endings of his movies and I think Minority Report is a prime suspect. I wasn't ever a fan of the hand-holding "laying it all out" explanation that Anderton gives Von Sydow (and us, the audience) in the penultimate scene. I thought that the whole "echo" subplot was a strange way to end the movie, and would have preferred a final act that continued to play into the questions of predestination and the morality of what is essentially deterrence theory, applied to criminal prosecution and law enforcement. Though the echo does follow the second act revelation by showing that the rules of precognition can be bent, and also broken. I guess I'm of two minds on this film. It's smart and thrilling for the first three quarters, but leaves me dissatisfied with its final stretch.

Good review, it's one of my favourite movies, but I agree it does run out of steam in the third act and I've always wished that there was one last little action set piece just to give it that extra punch to finish on, it just sort of fizzles out! A Nikita style kitchen shootout between Anderton and some of Lamar's security guys for example.

They did a bleach bypass on the negative in processing. Bleach bypass, also known as skip bleach or silver retention, is an optical effect which entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a color film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the emulsion along with the color dyes. The result is a black-and-white image over a color image.

Answer me this, if Anderton had a chance not to go to the hotel when he was in the garden, why not end the movie there and not go to the hotel? He could just stay in the garden and prove himself innocent, but the movie keeps going any because he's just an idiot like that. Just one of the million plot holes that left me so dissatisfied, even if Spielberg did direct it.

After watching those, wait till you get a load of movieplotholes.com/minority-report.html and alexpeak.com/art/films/mr/plothole/ Honestly though, once you've seen a movie a bunch of times over, everyone eventually finds these plotholes at some point, not that I hate this movie 100%. Personally it's more like a 6/10 after finding these plotholes, but maybe a 8/10 before the plotholes scrummaged up after repeat viewings. Glad some people liked it though. :)

OK, enough about the three triplets... anyway, I do agree with Chris about this movie. when I first saw it, I was mesmerized by the paradox of how the events of the movie unfold. if the precog didn't have that vision, there would be no reason for Tom Cruise's character to prove his innocence, therefore causing a man's death. the vision is what causes the events to unfold the way they did. so why did the precog have a vision that would cause someone's murder? the Visions are supposed to prevent murders from happening. so that's the paradox. I watched this movie so many times trying to catch little details that I missed and tell Tom Cruise's character could have been set up by his boss. but that means they would have to find a way to fake a vision? it still doesn't make sense, but I still love watching it.

One thing I've only just realised about this amazing film (that I've seen loads of times) - when John Anderton kills Leo Crow, that's actually the first 'successful' murder since precrime was formed. I'd only really viewed it in terms of John's experience until now but it would be a massive news story too.

Just watching this for the first time in 2021 and wanted to point out that (around the 2:40 mark) the cinematographer didn't "literally bleach the negative of the film". This is a technique bleach bypass. This process typically means you take out a step in the film dev process, not adding one (aka "bleaching the negatives"). The more you know! :)

Someone has already mentioned Phillip K. Dick but it is important. Ha made books and shorts stories that became some of the most influential scifi-movies ever. Like Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers (not a masterpiece but Peter Weller is in it so it is worth mentioning), Minority Report, Paycheck (for the cheese factor) and A Scanner Darkly. Of course the story is well written.

This may be a weird comparison, but the scene where he shoots Leo Crowe reminds me of That's So Raven. Raven's visions would always come exactly true, but sometimes they were misleading and would imply that different things would happen, just like Tom Cruise didn't intentionally kill him.

Great review Chris, minority report is a great movie, however I always wondered what it originally could've been, because if you didn't know, Minority report began its life as a sequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Total Recall" but when Arnold decided to drop out the script was changed and became minority report.

I love Minority Report. I agree with you about the ending, but for me it was mostly because Bald-Cruise's monologue is spoiled by Danny Whitwer's monologue prior where the twist was first revealed. Even though I love the former scene it makes the latter + final 15 minuts drag a bit.

Ending makes a lot more sense if you view it as the "Dream Ending". As Tom Cruise goes into the "Dream Prison" where all the other future criminals are kept, you hear it said that those in the prison see their lives flash before their eyes, "That all your dreams become true." I think the ending of the movie works much better seeing it as Tom Cruise's dream while he's in the Prison. That sort of weird, disjointed feeling about it kind of matches how dreams work.

For people how doesn't know, even if you watched the movie, you can also enjoy the original book version. Spielberg made indeed an adaptation of the novel, and both have different endings. It is even nice to compare both afterwards. And I have to say both versions of the story are really good.

A lot of people feel the ending never really took place. That it was just what was going on inside Anderton's head while he was in prison. As the Warden of the prison mentioned when Anderton was being "processed" "It's not that bad John. They say it is like a dream where all your wishes come true" And that makes sense. John finds the real villain (Lamar) the pre-cogs are freed and allowed to live in peace and he reunites with his estranged wife and they are expecting a child.

While I am pretty sure others have brought this up, it is theorized the reason why the last part of the movie is awkward is because after John Anderson is taken, he actually lost and is locked up, and the rest of the movie is a fantastical, done-in-jail dream of what he really wanted. This has been debated time and time again, but at least is worth mentioning. Spielberg doesn't tend to do movies like this, but since the original short story was so absurd, and the finale of the movie was so convenient, it can make sense.
