August is an important month for the pro-democracy movement in the Philippines. It gives us the time we need, especially in these very difficult times, to reflect on the importance of cherishing our democracy, and remember those who fought for its very survival. We remember President Benigno Aquino III forty days since his passing, as well as President Corazon C. Aquino, on the twelfth anniversary of her passing.
"Minsan ang Minahal ay Ako" was one of PNoy's favourite songs. Composed by Ryan Cayabyab, it was originally performed by OPM legends Celeste Legazpi and Mitch Valdez in the Filipino musical "Katy". The version by Ice Seguerra was the one he listened to the most. It was sung by Jaya during the necrological service for the late president on 25 June 2021 and by Bituin Escalante during the "Salamat PNoy" musical tribute concert on 02 August 2021.
According to President Aquino's family and closest friends, the song was a constant during the final years of his presidency and, of course, after he stepped down from office. The lyrics tell us why.
