The best part, HANDS DOWN, was “the mimic looked at the black swordsman, and the black swordsman looked at the mimic, and the mimic looked at the black swordsman, and the black swordsman looked at the black swordsman, and the mimic was a mimic of the black swordsman, was a mimic of the mimic of the black swordsman was a mimic, and he swung his sword, and his bones cracked underneath his armor, and his blood ran down his arm and dripped from the hilt of his blade, and he looked just like the black swordsman, as the black swordsman died the black swordsman”.

You said you wanted this to be the best Elden Ring content someone had ever seen. Honestly, I can't tell you one way or another, as there's nothing really to compare it to. This is a fusion of lore, playthrough and fan-fiction, somehow expertly paced over 3 hours.

At first my goal was to make lore videos because I thought my understanding of Elden Ring was the most correct one. Now, I just want to convey what the story of Elden Ring means to me, and the only way to do that is to explain the lore. If you don't know the lore, how will you understand the story? I started drafting my next script, hopefully we see the Black Swordsman again before he journeys to the Land of Shadow, and uncovers the mysterious that it holds.

Jack. Oh Jack. This was absolutely incredible. What a time to be alive! It's content like this that makes me grateful for having gotten into Souls games. The fact that members of the community can come together and share their thoughts and perspectives on any given topic warms my heart, especially when presented so masterfully. 3+ hours of peak storytelling. Bravo! I think what I love most is how no matter how far apart and different any 2 peoples lifestyles or experiences are, when they converge on one topic their thoughts can align in several ways, even when seen from differing perspectives and reasonings. I remember on your The Entire History of Caria video I left a comment stating I'd like to share my thoughts on some key topics, themes and the story as a whole. After the onslaught of community content since then to now peaking with the double whammy of you and Tarnished Archaeologist's video releases yesterday and today, that fire's been lit under me again to get this 1 ton gorilla off my shoulders and publish those thoughts and conclusions as many that I had discerned were verbatim or as close to what you guys have shared, though there are some points I feel have yet to be posited by anyone I've interacted with. Guess that means I'd better act on that before I get beat to the punch lol. Nonetheless, I do still intend to share that with you and the community at large. Continue to be encouraged and create works of art as I am sure you will continue to flourish in the weeks leading to and years after the release of this DLC. Absolutely floored waiting with excitement!

Jack, this is truly awesome in the literal sense of the word. I consume pretty much all ER lore content out there, as I’m sure many here do as well, and yours is always memorable because of the heart at its center. There is incredible ER scholarship out there (including yours), worthy of deep respect and which I adore, that I have found can become, in its pursuit of clarity (even purity), a bit frigid/distant/heady, something that often plagues academic work in our real life as well (somewhat understandably - “Through understanding of the proper way, our faith, our grace, is increased. Those blissful early days of blind belief are long past.”). While Elden Ring is inarguably a product of masterful precision in worldbuilding and storytelling, it is also clearly born out of such deep passion from its creators that I believe any attempt to get anywhere close to the “truth” of its story must meld the recognition of the craft with the emotional core of any tale worth telling, the melding that your content here and on Reddit never ever fails to achieve. Elden Ring is all about the push and pull, mind and body, heart and soul, sun and moon, masculine and feminine, a mending of two ends into a ring. You get it. I’m sorry for purely gushing at this point, but I just truly believe that people like Martin, Miyazaki, and Miura put their work out into the world, instead of keeping it to themselves, because they know the world has people like you to truly experience it. This is my long-winded way of saying thank you for making the world of Elden Ring, and ours, richer.

The only reason to explain the lore is to better understand the story, because the story is trying to tell us something about ourselves. All it is a story, but story telling is fundamentally human. Thank you for listening to the story I told, it fills me with immense pride and joy to know that it impacted at least one person.

Wow. Where to begin? I guess I first have to applaud not only your masterful approach to everything that went into the video, but also how you understand something too few storytellers seem to be able to grasp these days. To make a story relevant, one must first make it relatable. And to make a story relatable, one must be willing to display a certain level of vulnerability. You made this clear throughout the video, but more than anywhere else, in the beginning with your dedication, and again in the end, when you were getting visibly choked up as you circled back around to this very point. That as long as we struggle, we do not have to struggle alone. That as long as we struggle, we may yet serve a purpose in helping other strugglers get by. To struggle is not just about enduring, but embracing. And in doing so, we learn that struggling in itself is not merely some cursed aspect of existence, but rather something which holds true utility. For ourselves, and for those around us. By bringing this message around full circle, you revealed the unifying theme which lies at the very heart of this video: *"However ruined this world has become, however mired in torment and despair, life endures. Births continue. There is beauty in that, is there not?"* So I guess that's the best place to start. I can marvel at the cinematic quality of the fights you captured, or at the jawdropping quality of the editing work you put into this, or even at the fact that you didn't just select the most ideal song for some of the most pivotal scenes, but also the best possible version of those very songs. I can sit here and praise every aspect of the work you put into this, but at the end of the day, what matters most to me is what matters most in any work of art. What matters most is the heart and soul we pour into our art. Create what you love. Love what you create. And the rest is guaranteed to follow... -------------- (P.S. I will soon follow up on the actual lore elements contained in this video. I just wanted to make sure this comment wasn't so long that it discouraged people from reading what I had to say about the work you put into the video itself)

Lore exists to help tell a story, and good stories tell us something about our selves. In trying to explain how I understand the lore of Elden Ring, I couldn't help but explain how the story makes me feel. I've been chipping away at this for the last few days, and I gotta say, this may be my favorite Elden Ring video I've watched. I love the way you construct a story to frame your retelling and interpretations of the lore. And the way you used the Black Swordsman, especially the end of Chapter 4... this is the first time I don't want to spoil what happens in a youtube video. For anyone watching, if you can't stand the 3 hour runtime, at least check out the latter half of Chapter 4, starting about 2:07:00. The way it plays out is just great. Also, I love the OG DeS music in this. I can never not hear the leitmotif in the Elden Ring main theme.

I'm writing this as I'm watching, and Jack, once again I must commend your story telling ability and your ability to weave the thesis of your video into the story itself. The Ancient Dynasty and The Ancestral Followers being contemporaries of the Golden Order, being destroyed by Rot and Millania, Blade of Miquella, is something I hadn't considered, but I certainly see it now. Honestly, I just looked at the Greco-Roman design as short-hand for saying 'This is a world of many eras', such as how the Lands Between seem to be the dark-fantasy equivalent to the middle ages. My own theory had been that they were an off-shoot of the Farum Azula Beastmen culture, separated by long gulfs of time. The Tablet Man (as my group of friends call him) being the human form of The Placid Mountain himself. Cheeky TA reference as well, I like that. Millicent is an odd character, and I think her quest is one of the best character quests in the game if only for all the places it brings you (from Sellia to Elphael). She is also something of a mystery. Is she the Scarlet Valkyrie's daughter by blood or by rot or is she a lost aspect of our dear Blade of Miquella? I hope we find out more in the Land of Shadows, but I think we won't. Instead, I think we'll only get more questions. If Miquella set the stage to cure his sister by the sword, is it an act of mercy and love since there is no true cure but death, or is he removing another piece from the path of godhood? I've stated before in previous comments I'm not fond of the idea of Miquella being this villainous mastermind, but I'll confess, these have been winning me over to that line of thought. Perhaps the answer to my question lies somewhere in the median of those two extremes. I must thank you, because this mountain of a script, footage, and research could not have been easy. Godspeed in your works, Jack.

I can only tell a good enough story because I have been able to read and experience some of the greatest stories man has ever conceived. From the myths that which people thought made up the world, to poetry and plays that commented on the current day of hundreds of years ago, to the books, comics, and video games of the past 30 years that have shaped who I am. I can only do that with the "relics of those who came before, left to help those who would come after." It wasn't easy, but nothing ever is easy. It was a struggle to make this, but the struggle was worth it. There is value in struggling for others, for yourself. Your comment, as of those of others, are proof enough that my theories, at least some, are correct. Maybe not my theories on the lore, but at least what I think this piece of art is supposed to make us feel. I told you a story using Elden Ring as the base, using a character from Berserk, using music from Demon's Souls, using the writing style and some lines from A Song of Ice and Fire or Fevre Dream. All of those stories took inspiration, or even copied, from stories older than they are. Myths, and history, and great works. All I did was make a mimic of a mimic. 2:58:20 I always thought that there was something weird about Mohg's voice. He has that weird almost crack in his voice as he says "of our Dynasty!". It's not his voice cracking because he's secretly afraid of us, it's not that kind of voice crack. It's more like the voice of a child or a teenager trying to sound imposing. Maybe it's to symbolize how Mohg is stuck in his past trauma, how he has clung to his pain so tightly, he never really left the sewers like Morgot has.

Morgott and Mohg both deserve their own character studies about how abuse and trauma can affect how people learn to love and how they expect to receive love. Mohg finds solace in the Formless Mother(a literal absent parent) and Morgott finds love in his abuser.

One interesting thing I discovered is that in one of the episodes, it starts out with this quote: "Providence may guide a man to meet one specific person, even if such guidance eventually leads him to darkness. Man simply cannot forsake the beauty of his own chosen path. When will man learn a way to control his soul?" I believe this is significant, because Varre says at the very beginning: "Grace's guidance holds the answers. It will lead you Tarnished to the path you are meant to follow. Even if it leads you to your grave (darkness)." I think there is an overlap between Providence in Berserk and the Guidance of Grace in Elden Ring most definitely, I hope for all there is in the world you read this and find some connections from this!

Art exists because the artists wants to tell us something, whatever it may be. Sometimes, art tells us something about ourselves that we didn't know, and the fact that someone can feel the same way that we do is special. That is something that is uniquely human, that even if our struggle is unique, struggling in and of itself is not. When you struggle, you are never alone. We might not know it, we might not realize it, but we are all struggling together, we are never truly alone. I am happy to be able to share how much this art has impacted me with others, and I am happy that you found something of value from it.

Youve got an amazing storytelling ability and unique interpretation of the lore that makes an eerie amount of sense. This series and your interpretation have made me look at the storyline in a completely different light. It has also inspired me to finally start reading A Song Of Ice and Fire to paint the full picture. Other than it being long overdue, it's also helping me better understand the elements of George RR Martin's writing and character parallels in the game.

Incredible work as usual Jack, I think you’ve been spot on with Miquella this entire time. I’ll go as far as to say he’ll end up being much worse than Griffith. The beginning of the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer begins with Miquella, displaying the horror in the narrators voice, and the trailer ends with Miquella, in this spiritual, tranquil state while the music starts soft but then ends abruptly with a hint of horror. Let’s also talk about Malenia…she is completely entranced with Miquella to the state that she has no identity of her own. She is a blade, not a person. It is in her title, she is not her own being, but a literal weapon for Miquella. If Miquella cared so much for her he would not have left her to rot in the tree. Miquella shed himself of his flesh, he can appear to Malenia at any point he wants to let her know he’s ok, but he doesn’t…he appears to us, the Tarnished, in the form of nascent butterflies, in Torrent…his shadow bound beast, and Ranni, his possible ally gifting us summons. Miquella is focused on us now, and nothing else matters. Whatever Miquella has been up to, he has already succeeded, and we are the final chess piece in play, all we need to do is find him in the lands of Shadow to find out our true purpose. Malenia failed in her mission to kill Radahn, so Miquella discarded his weapon and has gained a new one in us. My personal theory, Miquella is going to fuse his wandering soul into the body of Godwyn to be reborn as a god, with us as his weapon/consort. Miquella was behind Night of the Black Knives to destroy Godwin’s souls and replace it with his own to gain an adult form. “Your comrade remains soulless, I will never lay your eyes upon it now, your Devine Haligtree”. Miquella needs the eclipse to enter the body of the God of Death to start a new age for all things shunned by the golden order.
@JackisaMimic
@JackisaMimic 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Miquella is already a pretty bad dude, if you follow with me that he is the main actor pulling the strings. If he is the main instigator for the NOBK, and the Shattering War, then that’s already pretty bad. Orchestrating conspiracies that leads to untold amount of suffering and destruction is a bad thing to do. Now the question is does he have an end goal that would be lead to a better life for people moving forward, and if so, do the ends justify the means? Do the people who find safety, security, and prosperity in Falconia not deserve it because it was built on the bodies of the Band of the Hawk?

@@JackisaMimic spot on and also, from Berserk…Griffith connected the realms to the “real world” with the world tree. At the end of the Shadow of the Erdtree gameplay trailer, you see Miquella raising his hand over the “shadow” tree, with no curtains in the sky. I believe at some point in the expansion, Miquella connects the Land of Shadow to the Lands Between, altering the base game.

First of all, amazing video and great writing skills indeed! I was mesmerized by the way you are able to choose the exact adjectives and descriptive words to convey the ambience, character or event exactly as it feels. 👏👏 But then, I still can’t get my head around the fact that Miquella would want Mogh to kidnap him, disrupting the process of Miquella's turning into a full-grown man, which was one of his utmost desires. So that Mogh would infect him with the cursed blood and damage his cocoon, that would prevent Miquella from finishing his transformation forever… It just doesn’t make sense. Maybe you could help me out with the reasoning?

Thank you, I am happy you enjoyed the video! I put a lof of heart into this thing and Im glad it resonated with you. I actually have a video on that exact topic that I recently recorded regarding the mechanics of blood! I should have that video(hopefully) next week or so. From what we know of Miquella and the DLC, it appears his end goal is within the Land of Shadow, and he divested himself of his flesh and all things golden to get there. How we see him in game currently is just his body, his spirit is off somewhere else, hopefully when that video is finished it will answer your questions!
@elena2059
@elena2059 4 месяца назад
Interestingly enough, does it mean that the character (us) also has to die (divest themselves of flesh) to travel to that land? Or we would somehow travel in our mind… 🤔 Still somehow a weird thing to do from his side, to put so much efforts into trying to transform and then abandon this aim to proceed his higher goal (travelling to Lands of Shadow). Why bothering to do it in the first place. He could just compel Mogh to “infect” him without turning into a cocoon, or I may be mistaken and it’s mandatory. 🙂 Thank you for the answer! Awaiting for the mechanics of blood video.

Very impressive work once again, Preceptor! I can tell you put a lot of yourself into this one, perhaps some of the lines *mimic* how you feel about certain things in your own life too? I have finally been able to play Demon's Souls for the first time recently and was struck by this quote describing Maiden Astraea, which really reminded me of Miquella too: "It is natural that those who take in all that is impure are themselves the most impure of all." FromSoft love to reuse ideas and put clever new spins on them, and her position as being a "pure" saintly figure residing in a land of rot and defilement while being guarded by one brave knight alone is definitely paralleled by Sister Friede and Sir Vilheim from Dark Souls III, and Miquella and Malenia could also be a twist on this pairing.
@JackisaMimic

Art mimics life as much as we mimic art ;) Maiden Astraea is my favorite boss fight in all souls games, maybe in any game ever. The music, the atmosphere of the whole level leading up to it, her dialogue, everything about it. @JackisaMimic I have a wild theory based on lore text in the game that I don’t hear too many people mention. In Godricks great rune description it mentions that: “The first demigods were The Elden Lord Godfrey and his offspring, the golden lineage.” However, we know from the finger readers dialogue that ‘the demigods are each and all direct offspring of Queen Marika.’ I’ve heard it argued that he became a demigod when he became elden lord, just like how Radagons children with Rennala became demigod stepchildren. However, not only is that not mentioned in game, but we know that Radagon is Marika. Therefore Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard are legitimate demigods. Also, some say that the great runes make someone a demigod, but that is also not true because our character can become elden lord and receives multiple great runes, and yet we never gain that status. I believe Hoarah Loux was secretly Marikas own child. Which is another reason as to why he’s so powerful even before becoming Elden lord. If I am right, then there’s no Justice for Marika.
@JackisaMimic
@JackisaMimic 4 месяца назад
Demigod can be confusing term because it actually has two meanings that are used interchangeably: one is just a title for royal family of Marika, this is why Godfrey is considered a Demigod and the Carian kids became demigod “step-children” after Radagon and Marika wed. Then we have the literal sense of the word where demigods are the children of Marika, this isn’t a title and just literally they are children of a god. For instance, Radahn and Rykard were ALWAYS demigods, because Radagon is Marika but the rest of the world wasn’t privy to that information
@alfredcruz8238
@alfredcruz8238 4 месяца назад
@@JackisaMimic I appreciate the response. I agree that the term can be confusing based on how it’s used. In the game though, I don’t remember anyone being called a demigod that wasn’t a child of Marika. That is except Godfrey. Also the finger readers words hold weight when she says ‘the demigods are each and all direct offspring of Queen Marika.’ So if all of the demigods are indeed children of marika, then he may in fact be her secret son. Or he was born of another god. Martin has written crazier things in his books. Kinda falls in line with your Maliketh and Blaidd theory. Either way it’s just an idea. But I see nowhere in game that points to anyone being a demigod that was not a child of Marika/Radagon.
@JackisaMimic
@JackisaMimic 4 месяца назад
You are correct, however we can confirm that Godfrey is not her child based on his boss fight. If I remember correctly we get “Legend Felled” and not “Demigod Felled” And based on the line about “Demigod Step-Children” we know that it is used as a title without it necessarily being blood relations(remember the world doesn’t know Radagon is Marika) AND Godfrey calls himself the first Elden Lord and we know that isn’t true based on Placidusax, so Godfrey has a track record of bending the truth. Godfrey ain’t even his real name, that chump

I don't remember which video the reference was in, this one or Part 1, but: Some Elden Ring Lore Theorists: Ah-ha! Saying Godwyn is a son of Godfrey & Marika is an assumption! Literally the Game, about Godwyn: "Scion of the Golden Bough" Bro scion is literally synonymous with child and literally means heir as much as descendant. And considering the botany meaning being a cutting from an original that had been grafted or planting, i.e. literally 'part of the original'. What else can Golden Bough be a euphemism for but the Golden Lineage branch of the family tree? Bough literally means 'a tree branch, particularly a large or main branch.' That said I'm over here headcanoning thay Godrick is either Godwyn's twin or his son. So it's not like I'm standing on very stable theory ground myself, but at least I don't look at explicit text in the game and go 'idk that's kinda vague' as if 'blood of Godfrey' isn't literally the most vague way to say someone is related to someone else.
