Miracle Farms, a 5-acre commercial permaculture orchard in Southern Quebec, Canada

Twenty years ago, Stefan Sobkowiak bought a commercial apple orchard with the intention of converting it to an organic orchard. He did just that, but eventually understood the limitations of the organic model originating from monoculture. He then decided to tear out most of the trees and replant in a way that would maximize biodiversity and yield while minimizing the amount of maintenance required. Inspired by permaculture principles, the orchard now counts over 100 cultivars of apples, plus several types of plums, pears, cherries, and countless other fruits and vegetables.

This guy is so awesome. We need more people like this with his mentality in this world. I love it when he says people get mad because some insect will eat one some of the fruits. But isn't he right? What's wrong with some insect or bird, etc eating some of the fruit, they are working day and night to help and take care of it for you. Everything has it's place in our ecosystem and we seem to always put ourselves first and center of everything. Some animals and insects tirelessly toil day in and day out to survive and we are so stingy that we have a fit if a squirrel or any type of animal or insect gets any tiny bit of our crops. We seriously need a total shift in our mindset and the way in which we relate to the environment and our ecosystems along with our place in it. We share this planet with them and they help us and we should be helping them in return. We have so much to learn still.

I've watched this three times now. I love the attitude of "Why Not" and "let's live for a greater purpose" than purely making money as a business. Yes, it needs to make cash flow for sure, without it, the orchard biz dies for sure ... But I think this wise gentleman knows to let profit and abundance become a by product of that clear decision to live with and for a higher purpose, which includes a clear plan/system to benefit others including some "pesties"... Awesome. Big picture, stewardship thinkers are legends. Thanks so so much for sharing this Possible . Org. Big Smiles from me, David.

As part of our training associated with receiving a grant from Tree Canada to plant an orchard of northern adapted fruit and nut trees and bushes at our site in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland we were required to participate in an online workshop with Stefan. It was absolutely wonderful. He shared with us many details of how he has applied permaculture insights to how we plant and maintain our trees. Among the insights he shared were planting nitrogen fixing plants alongside fruit, to provide continuous and ongoing fertilization to the fruit trees, mixing trees and vines and shrubs, inviting birds and pollinators in, and finally, when asked why aphids were such a problem, he said they are a message, and the message is "too much nitrogen in the soil." This is a great video, and an introduction to someone who has continued learning as he works with plants.

Stefan, What a wonderful garden you have! I am speechless! I totally agree with you, "why not share with the nature." I live in Calgary, Alberta, zone 3. Not much luck for fruit trees. Not even good vegetables. So I grow mostly root vegetables and lettuce or leafy greens like spinach and mustard which grow in a short time. last year I grew cabbages in green house, because they take really long time. Beans are good here too. But I have handful of sweet crab apple trees which give me the feeling as my home orchard. :). I want to come someday to try some heavenly testy fruits from your garden, before that I don't want to die. :)

I've known Stefan for about 25 years & keep on learning. Birds, bats, bees & other species as workers who deserve to share a portion of the crop, is an important refrain because together our harvest is much greater. As you can see Stefan is someone who builds upon the detail of each moment in every relationship as well as strategically across decades for the whole world. For those who are interested in creating permaculture or 'indigenous' (Latin 'self-generating') polyculture as well in the city & particularly around & over multihome buildings, please visit: 1 how to grow your own raw vegan food garden | indigenecommunity

Seriously one of the best videos on this subject I've seen...and I am obsessed w/ this topic. I am doing the same thing w/ my yard and constantly learning, planning and planting. I'm in WI, and have been planting EVERY fruit, nut, berry and plant for wildlife I can over the last 8 years on 2 acres. Even had Almonds fruit last year. Every year I expand and learn so much more. Finally getting honey bees this spring and have another batch of Mason bees to release soon:) If only everyone could be so "in the know"! What a wonderful, thriving and diverse planet this could return to. Thank you for caring!!!!

Awesome video!! My husband and I are starting a food forest on "wasteland" in our back yard. It was wet, soggy, weedy and covered in debris because it was once a mini horse pasture. We cleaned up the land, installed drain tile next to the area and placed a ton of organic plant materials on the area. The drain tile worked so well that we now have a mini pond that we plan to expand in the coming years. So far we have layered hay, straw, leaves and wood chips over the entire area. I am still amazed at how well the wood chips and other materials are absorbing the extra water in the area. We started planting bushes and flowers. So far things are growing well. I expect that each year it will get better and better, especially if we can wisely incorporate a large diversity of plants and more organic materials to break down over time. We also put in a garden in the area of the food forest closest to the house. Things grew well. I am hoping this year things grow even better!! Our goal is to develop a permaculture food forest and garden combination. I love your channel Stefan!!
