The last day of the British Empire & Commonwealth Games was one of the most exciting sporting days is Canadian history - captured live on CBUT (CBC Vancouver) television at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Racing in the men's mile final were Dr. Roger Bannister and John Landy. Both runners had recorded sub-4 minute mile earlier in the year. This was the first time both runners would meet for a sub-4 minute mile showdown. The race is shown in its entirety.

Although the race was just slightly before my time...Roger Bannister was still one of my boyhood idols. RIP Dr. Bannister. Remarkable achievement both on and off the track.

To put this race in perspective, Bannister {England}, Landy {Australia}, Ferguson {Canada} and Milligan {Northern Ireland} all hit the 1,500m mark ahead of the time posted in the '52 Olympics by Champion Barthel of Luxembourg

As a Canadian, I was wondering what Rich Ferguson's time was. Just looked it up, 4:04.6 and Milligan was 4:05. Considering where he was I was hoping Ferguson would have been closer to 4 minutes than he was.

Actually, I think this was his last mile, because his last race was the European Championship 1500m later that month.

great race...landy was spent...great race..John Landy was one of the greatest sportsman runners of all time...if it were not for him...roger would not have run the times he did...and both of them knew it...long live the pure sportsmen...long live athletes doing the best they possibly can while not forgetting who and what kind of persons they are!

Didn't Landy cut his foot some time before the race ?.He put a plaster on it,on the sole of his foot, but refused to mention it to anyone in case they thought he was making excuses. He was truly a great sportsman and a thorough gentleman.

@@djangorheinhardt That is true, he was running barefoot and ran over some broken glass. He claimed it was on a part of the foot that didn't affect him but I think it had to just by wearing a shoe alone. He looked ok in the race but you never know if it affected him or not but that doesn't take away from his great sportsmanship.

To see this "race of the century" live at a time before video tape recorders existed, was quite an amazing thing for people in North America. On the same broadcast, Jim Peters came into the stadium just half a lap from the finish of the marathon, at world-record pace. But he'd depleted his hydration and electrolytes to the point that he collapsed and couldn't finish. This event brought the beginning of providing water stations along marathon courses and the development of sports drinks to replenish electrolytes.

Back in 1954 CBUT wasn't connected to the CBC network- so for the race to be seen live outside of Vancouver NBC quickly built 3 microwave towers in NW Washington State so the CBUT signal could be relayed to Seattle. From Seattle, the signal was sent by coaxial cable across the US, and up to Toronto. That is how the race was shown throughout the US and Eastern Canada.

An incredible finish. At the 5:46 mark, while Landy looked inside to see Bannister, Bannister passed him on the outside.

To busted cookout this was an unusual broadcast NBC devoted an hour to the broadcast. Ben Grauer most noted for New Year's Eve announcing on NBC anchored with Wes Santee in New York then when the Duke of Edinburgh came in to the Empire Stadium they switched over to CBC where Steve Douglas announced.

Wonder why Landy, already in the first lane, looked to his inside several times (3) near the finish? Mistake!

It would have been more entertaining if the Dr. B. collapse pantomime (only engaged in after a win) also embraced some violent shaking and foaming of the mouth. But it was impressive.
