Incredible, authentic, recently discovered, original play-by-play call of The Miracle On Ice hockey game, perhaps the greatest upset in the history of team sports. When the USA shocked Russia, 4-3, at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, Curt Chaplin was covering the game as a sports reporter for ABC Radio Network Sports. Crouched on a camera platform in the crowd, he did a solo play-by-play of the entire game into his tape recorder, capturing the event on tape forever. Now, his call has been rediscovered and layered over the video, resulting in a dramatic, stirring and brand new experience for sports fans all over the world. Curt's call has been accepted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in Toronto. Relive the #1 sports event of the 20th Century (Sports Illustrated) as never before, through new eyes and a new voice. Still fresh and exciting as the day it happened. Tell every hockey fan and sports fan you know about this video. Send them the link. A must experience for EVERYONE. #miracleonice #miracle #1980 #lakeplacid #winterolympics #olympichockey #mikeeruzione #jimcraig #herbbrooks #upsets #sportsupsets #1980winterolympics

God Here I live in Pittsburgh, so I’ve seen some pretty good hockey players, and teams. Many were Canadians, yes. But the miracle on ice was bigger than any cup ever. Period. And absolutely no Canadians were involved. I think it’s kind of ironic, that’s all. All you Canadian pond hockey players just have to live with that. Btw god. Mario was better than Wayne; more gifted by you (god), more talented, bigger, stronger, faster, a more gifted scorer, passer and penalty killer.

The best part is Eruzione's goal, you can hear the announcer and the crowd almost feeling that the goal is coming before he even shoots. The crowd's volume raises and the announcer's voice cracks. You could tell by Eruzione's position that he had the perfect angle and screen for that shot.

This is a great video especially since the original game was only heard live on the RADIO. The game was played around rush hour and ABC decided to delay the video broadcast. I was in Boston screaming at a radio. People pulled over and wouldn't go thru the tunnels, they pulled over on the Mass Pike. My husband and I had just graduated from BU Law and 4 of our Terriers were on that team so we were invested big time. It was fun finally SEE the game, but the original broadcast was on the RADIO.

Think about it. The Soviet Union National Hockey Team had not lost an Olympic Medal Game before this Game after 1960 and the only Olympic Game they lost between 1960 and this Game was in 1968 against Czechoslovakia they lost 5-4. They won almost every Annual World Hockey Championship every year during the second half of the 1950's, the entire 1960's, the entire 1970's and the entire 1980's before the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992.

Beating Russia was a Truly a Miracle AS RUSSIANS WERE NOT AMATEURS NOR EVEN PRO TEAMS ALL STARS ..... they played as "ARMY" athletes .... for years and years, therefore so very familiar line mates and just Phenomenally hard to defeat. USA barely did it .... then beat Finland for the Medal ! jj

There was a clip on youtube of Eruzione shooting his wrister past Myshkin, and you can see what a pro Eruzione really was, because from a kind of behind him point of view at ice level, you can really see how fast and hard the wrist shot is when the puck leaves his stick. The goalie didn't have a chance.

I got curious about what I'd remembered, so I did a bit of research and found that yes, the game had a start time of 5p.m. ABC asked the Olympic officials to make the time later and they refused so the game was seen on a tape delay in prime time and the real game was played in the height of rush hour on Friday night, Feb. 22. I remember standing transfixed in front of a freaking radio and screaming my lungs out. Silk, Eruzione, O'Callahan, and Craig were our BU guys. What a thrill.

While Al Michaels' call of the game is well-known and has been recreated in the movie "Miracle", Curt's call was packed away in his house until 2006 when he decided to put it on CD and then match the call with the video from ABC Sports. When the game started, no one thought the USA had any chance to win. When Johnson tied it up 2-2 with his goal at the buzzer of the 1st period it was shocking, but there were still 2 long periods to go and we all figured it was just a matter of time before the Russians exploded. When the 2nd pd. ended and it was only 3-2, I began to anticipate the very real possibility of the upset because I realized they were just ONE SHOT away from tying it up. When it happened it was sheer bedlam.

In 38 years, I've gotten chills every single time I've seen a clip of this game or the Finland game two days later. That's how much of an impact this game had on me. Unbelievable.

People forget that to win the Gold Medal they had to play and at least tie Finland Sunday morning (game started around 11:00 AM.

These days I cry harder watching this. In high school we all had USA jerseys we were so American and proud back then. We all got along. What the hell happened?

Good question. However it opens a can of worms all the cloud-space of RU-vid can't constrain. But it's still a good question.... :-/

What happened was, the rich came along and bought the politicians who stole your pensions, sent your jobs overseas, got huge tax breaks while you paid more, cut public services so that people had no dignity left, and then convinced you it was the leftists who had done this to you, all the while they sat back and counted their money. That's what happened.

Pavelich was a terrific hockey player. Held the record alone until this year for goals scored by a US player with 5 until it was tied this year. Peak Pavelich would have probably made this USSR team along with Neal Broten and possibly Dave Christian up front. Mike Ramsey and Ken Morrow may have made the USSR D at their peak. Goes to show you there was some really good talent on the US Team.

Herb Brooks let the players have their time with the lights on them - 30 seconds after the win everyone from the USA was on the ice - except Herb Brooks walking up the tunnel into darkness where nobody could see him .
