Surprised this wasn’t mentioned, but that levee was at the back of the NASA facility in New Orleans where I worked for many years. It’s in New Orleans East - the Michoud Assembly Facility, where the Saturn V boosters were built as well as the Space Shuttle External Tanks. The main NASA building there (Bldg 350) had photos of it and the plane/crew next to the main offices. It was an amazing feat, and just miraculous that nobody was hurt. NASA presented the crew with awards as well. :) I think this was 1988...?

Why is everybody talking about that he only had one eye. The problem wasn't the eye. The problem was that the two engines turn off. The pilot was a better pilot than most pilots that have their two eyes because he landed that big plane without the engines power and only with one eye.

Atalanta571: after initiating a side slip, And prior to landing, the pilot must orient the aircraft normally for glide and touchdown. You do not land with a side slip and you do not land slower because you were sideslipping just prior to touchdown. Sideslip allows you to safely lose altitude rapidly so that you can land at the desired spot without over shooting it. Side slip is not a dangerous or risky maneuver, it is easier to do than a steep turn. The problem is most pilots do not practice it. Excellent pilots, such as bush pilots, they use it every day. An aircraft of any size can do a side slip. It is not restricted to small aircraft. A lot of disinformation is propagated in this video so as to further dramatize the action.

I'm so conflicted. They were flying through hail big enough to damage the airframe. That should have been the first sign to GTFO. Then the engines ate shit and they hot-started them both and burned them out. Engine 2 could have waited for full relight procedure, following the fast relight of engine 1 which would have avoided inner turbine meltdown. Then they decided to continue to New Orleans rather than land at the naval base. Great landing nonetheless but this was a bit of a cowboy moment that could have been prevented.

What superb flying!! I've seen this several times, still amazed, full of admiration for the crew. One thing to point out: binocular vision from having the use of two eyes only distinguishes depth to less than 20 feet. Therefore, happily, the captain's having only one eye did not affect his ability to judge distances beyond the front of the cockpit.

To say he "cashed in" is disrespecting the 35 years of training and experience it took to get to the level of skill to land a damaged A380 safely. Its like 35 years of training for the one day when it made a huge difference to the passengers and crew on the aircraft. Just like Capt. Amazing landing, the pilot saved many lives. It turns out they flew through a thunderstorm which flooded the engines, the water stalled the engines. They tried a restart but to no avail. Since then they've made changes to engines to drain water.

***** Would you have preferred a much less experienced pilot be put in that situation? One that possibly would not have noticed the levee and would have tried to ditch in the water? The only successful water ditching of a plane that size that I can think of immediately is the Hudson River landing.

The mentioned 'risky procedure call side slip"; nothing risky about it. This is a normal procedure used during normal landings to correct for crosswinds.
@kodiak1966
@kodiak1966 11 лет назад
So what you are saying then is that it is easy to "side slip" a 47 ton airliner when it is not windy at all?
@peterrafeiner9461
@peterrafeiner9461 11 лет назад
The question was not if it is 'easy' but if it is 'risky'. Risky it is not, easy... depends on the aircraft but yes, it is not as difficult as one would think. I've done it plenty of times in 737s for example.
@peterrafeiner9461
@peterrafeiner9461 11 лет назад
BTW, to sideslip ANY aircraft... yoke deflection to one side (usually into the sidewind) and stomp on the opposite rudder pedal... That's really all there is to it.
@correocasa3
@correocasa3 10 лет назад
not risky but racist because it's the only comment in the whole aviation videos in the channel wich dares to not only question the actions of the pilot, but to impose jugdement upon a critical manouver required to land a brick falling to earth. And nobody got hurt. and the plane was saved, but oh! where they latinos! so they go ahead and reveal how little the person behind the racist comment was. The only negative tarnishing comment upon a pilot in this nazi channel is about a latino capitain who saved lives and plane with one eye. Fuck you racist nobody, you're damaging the magnificent reputation at smithsonian channel, unless it's not related at all with the Smithsonian. Was it worthy?
@tedthughes
@tedthughes 10 лет назад
A crosswind approach does not require cross controlling the AC. A side slip is for a quick loss of altitude while maintaining heading and does require cross controlling. Also all AC have different reaction during the side slip. i.e. Take a 172, gusty wind, 15 degrees of flap and see how quickly you will roll inverted.

An airplane is an airplane is an airplane: you can glide or sideslip anything, even a 747. Just watch your speed, be situationally aware. Ask the pilots of the Gimli Glider 767 in Canada...they glided and did a bigger sideslip and greased it in, so it's quite possible. Consummate respect for the pilots in this incident, they even kept the landing gear intact. *That's* amazing in itself.

A side slip is NOT a risky maneuver for any airplane. It's designed to allow the plane to lose altitude while NOT gaining airspeed by turning the plane slightly sideways to the slip stream increasing drag. All planes do it (even A380's) when landing in a crosswind.
@mcgalcri
@mcgalcri 11 лет назад
Totaly agree!!, Also is common in cross winds landings...
@BlaineCyr
@BlaineCyr 10 лет назад
You're thinking of a foreward slip, a sideslip is used during crosswind landings to stay aligned with the runway. But I do agree it's not dangerous at all. It's a tv show, they've got to make it sound dramatic
@mcgalcri
@mcgalcri 10 лет назад
Blaine Cyr Yes, your right was my mistake, wrong translation hehe, im spanish. Anyway... the one of the most common maneuvres learned in the flight school.
@corsario305
@corsario305 10 лет назад
I would agree a side slip is no a risky maneuver on a 737 IN PERFECT CONDITION, but would you volunteer to perform a side slip on a 737 with both engines shut down while landing? oh! and by the way you are not landing at an airport with a 9000 ft runway. Believe me, the side slip on that flight was risky
@JulianShagworthy
@JulianShagworthy 10 лет назад
Just being pedantic, but during a crosswind landing, at my airline (and this counts for every pilot I know with other airlines), you are in balance and rudder will be neutral. During approach, you are not paralleled with the runway of course, but you are still flying straight and true through the air mass, so are fully coordinated. You are referring to the 'crab' method used more often when flying light aircraft, requiring rudder input. Obviously at the point of landing itself you do 'crab' for a few seconds prior to touchdown, but that is it. A sideslip IS a riskIER maneuver, however. Your stalling speed increases, air data is less reliable and in certain aircraft it is actually prohibited at certain flap settings.
