On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

No way! My granddad also worked on SAAF Mirages. IIIs or F1s? On a side note, Aerges said they would be willing to produce more F1 variants after they finish the F1M. Considering that the Iraqi F1EQ has very little information available, as Dassault destroyed all documents regarding the F1EQ, the next best option would be an F1AZ in my opinion. The AZ would be different enough from the other F1 variants in DCS, which would make it worth modeling. Plus, there’s easily accessible information online and several examples on display in museums. The missiles you've used in a first fight were R-60M from 1982, they were capable and far more modern then MiG-21bis itself. Magic-1 missile you used on Mirage is from early 1970 - it's a decade earlier missile than Soviet R-60M. Both MiG-21bis and Mirage F.1C were from very early 1970s, even though MiG-21 had different, earlier variants as well. Thx, great video!

Seems like a really poor design choice on the mirage to have that alpha warning at a point where it’s expected to go off in routine maneuvering. Alarm fatigue means the pilot will learn to ignore the warning which could have disastrous consequences. A two-stage alarm where there’s a warning first, which is just advisory, as opposed to an actual alarm when something bad is happening; seems wiser. Harassing the pilot with alarms gets in the way of their situational awareness as well.

My analysis of the fight (for what its worth...) This turned into a 100% pilot skill contest. The F1 is the superior platform here, but lack of familiarity with its flight characteristics hamstrung it in both encounters. It was pretty apparent that both pilots were far more comfortable in the MiG 21, which makes sense - because its been on the platform for ages.

Another challenge for the Mig-21's was that the V-3 Kukri worked with a helmet mounted sight. The A model Kukri had poor performance but the B model Kukri was about equal to the J model Aim-9. Off-bore, they had a potential mind-numbing 90 degrees, though 45-70 was more typical in all exes - all with the Armscor lightweight LDR array on the helmets, a full decade before all other systems in Russian and Western fighters. The CZ and AZ were the most deadly fighters in Southern Africa for 20 years for that reason alone.

The HMS was an option, but rarely used due to its weight. It wasn't comfortable at all during hard manuvering. The V3B also had its manuvering limits although Armscor brochures don't specify the rear aspect only limits of the missile. It was a good missile, but was no world beater. Matter of fact only the Strike F1AZ's carried the V3B. The interceptor F1CZ's carried the M550 when deployed on operations.

The Cold War era fighters have such limited views from the cockpit. Never really thought about it till watching these videos. The canopies are divided into multiple sections and the metal joining the sections really does impair the pilot's view. The old Migs, the Mirage, the F14; all have some limitations. Current pilots are certainly lucky with near 360 views.

I am not sure they lost that many.... IIRC they lost 3 mig 21's while getting one air to air shootdown by a mig 21. The SAAF lost 2 F1's to ground fire but were able to shoot down 4 aircraft. IIRC, mig 23's didn't get any air to air kills either.

@vxru5 2 года назад
The problem is not with the SAAF itself but rather the government and the constant budget cuts. They're still extremely capable, and the fact that they are able to operate at the level they do while being hampered by all the funding issues is a testament to that. It's really sad to see how the Defence Force gets treated by the government as a whole to be honest.

The SAAF painscheme of the era was beautiful, they just need some mild corrections on the details: the national insignia should have the sprinbok inset, not the eagle (the eagle is the current insignia). Also, some placement issues (ejection seat warning should be under the canopy, and insignia further forward on the sides, just behind the air intakes). But I'm nitpicking, it's just great to see a genuine South African colour scheme in DCS!

while R-60s might have the flare resistance of a magnifying glass, and a range worse than the earliest model AIM-9s, they can still pull a really respectable amount of G's. not 100% sure but I believe among the order of 20-30G, even
@paristo
@paristo 2 года назад
The important factor is that where R-3S is limited to 1.6-2 g at launching platform, the R-60 (non-M) allows 7g, and maximum overload for the missile is 47 g, meaning it can track a target pulling 12 g (3.9:1 ratio, generally it is taken as 3-5:1 ratio. Example AIM-120C-5 can only pull 30g (some speak about 20 g) limiting target interception capability to 7.5-8 g). The R-60 lacks in the range (at sea level 0.25-1.5 km, at altitude 0.3-8 km), but unlike AIM-9 or R-3 and other missiles at the time, you had seeker uncaged and have excellent capability to turn, until R-73 came out, it was most agile missile. But most importantly is its fuzing, as the warhead was capable to destroy target at 300 meters from the launch, where example AIM-9 required 2.5 km (about 5 seconds acceleration) to fuze the warhead after launch. That is why you couldn't go use AIM-9 at close ranges as only choice was to use gun. Again, DCS doesn't simulate this old AIM-9 missiles limitation, giving huge advantage to its operators.

fascinating channel, really have enjoyed the vids and the commentary (that often drives me out to find definitions of all the terms) -- just wanted to add this funny thought that occurred to me during this video: The tech and science behind these aircraft is so refined, yet the crafts' purpose is solely designed for destruction. what a world. Just another "what if" moment. have a nice day everyone.

Loving to see the Mirage F-1, such a beautiful aircraft. It's also nice to see you take the good old Fishbed for a spin, would love to see her against the phantom again some day.

Possibly better place to pose the question. Good day, do not play myself, maybe one day, but videos are very entertaining thanks! Question, does the Cheetah C (Upgraded Mirage III) feature in DCS?

GS, "Yeah, I'll swap planes. I don't care what you put me in, I'll kill you with it." Great flying, but the MiG 21 made the Mirage F1 work for it.

In real life the F1 was much better that the Mig21, which was already inferior to the mirage III. The F1 has a much better electronic, better range, excellent power to weight ratio, better guns...

Man, maybe the F1 performs better, but at least the mig shuts the hell up about it, lol

As a new subscriber, what does fox 1 and fox 2 represent?
@GM-fh5jp
@GM-fh5jp 2 года назад
So Fox 1 is a radar guided missile that relies on guidance from the launch aircraft all the way to the target...which basically means you have to keep the radar of your aircraft pointed at the enemy until the missile impacts. They are old technology and not used these days in modern aircraft which use missiles that have their own radar built into the missile and can track the target even if the launch aircraft turns away and breaks it's own radar lock on the target. That is a called a *Fox 3* missile.( eg an AMRAAM or a Meteor) A Fox 2 missile is a heat seeking missile that tracks and guides to the target by detecting the heat coming from the target's engines or airframe (which heats up during flight). So it uses the infra red spectrum to guide itself and sometimes an actual image camera which can "see" the shape of an aircraft, sometimes called IIR (imaging/infrared) You have to be careful using a Fox 2 around other friendly aircraft in a dogfight because it might go for a friend's aircraft if it crosses the path of the missile.(eg A Sidewinder or an Archer) You can check GS's play list for a video which discusses this terminology.

The South African DCS guys are all working at breakneck speed to improve the CZ skins, as well as make an AZ skins which are correct - because the released CZ skins are grossly inaccurate rubbish ! Historically, the F-1 could best 21's and 23's with great ease, and did so. Its not a bit of an edge - it was a massive one ! And thats before we get to the pair of 30mm cannon...
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 2 года назад
but to be clear we are discussing dogfighting capabilities, in BVR the Mirage is of course head and shoulders above the mig21, few people would debate that fact.

@@GrowlingSidewinder 100% true ! - and that's before we get to the (we hope it gets implemented) Armscor LDR-array off-bore helmet guidance system made in the early 1970's for IIICZ and EZ, which allows a 50-70 degree reticle guidance for the F-1. It made it equally deadly in the VIS missile intercept domain too 🙂

Maybe the detached Fox-2 was the MiG's secret off-boresight capability.
