We know this Mirage III thanks to the another French pilot comic, Tanguy & Laverdure. Michel Tanguy and Ernest Laverdure are best Mirage III special pilots in French Air Force located in Dijon headquarters.
As a French i'm very proud of my country producing this beautiful aircraft, also your pronounciation was great! (yes i'm someone like that when someone misspronouce a french word i get a little tilted) Nice video btw! Bonne chance pour la suite ;)
The United States and the European countries that follow it have a complex from Russia We always see them trying to exaggerate describing the capabilities of their weapons in exchange for underestimating the power and efficiency of Russian weapons 🔴In the Vietnam War, the American forces lost about 103 Phantoms against 66 of the MiG-21s in the air confrontations of North Vietnam that were using those planes. During the Iran-Iraq war, Iran lost many of them in a few days of the war, and the absolute air sovereignty of Iraq continued using the MiG-23 and 25, and the Phantoms could not intercept the fighters throughout the years of the war and failed to protect the capital, Tehran On October 14, 1973, 62 Egyptian MiG-21 aircraft participated in the face of a Zionist air attack with 120 warplanes, according to what the US website (Roach) reported. In 1940, French President Albert Le Pen resisted the Nazi German invasion of his country for just one day. Then he ran away like a dog to an unknown place, and the pens of French historians and the media fell silent about mentioning this disgrace. Remain silent in remembrance of those who did not have the honor of resistance one day in the face of the occupation 🔴 In fact, the best thing Trump did was slap the garbage to Macron when he talked about the weakness of NATO and its independence from protecting America. Trump told him, If it wasn't for the USA, you'd be speaking German now 😏😎 Although he softened it and did not remind him of what the Germans had done to them and the cowardly French remained in front of them for a few hours.
Just imagine back when the Mirage III came in service back in the 60's. Most aircrafts types at the time were early fighters jets not even capable of supersonic speed. And now comes this elegant, nimble, super agile and also super fast +Mach 2 hot rod. What a jump in capabilities it presented. This kind of capabilities jump between fighter design generation is since long gone. Now it's not in the hardware anymore, but probably the software.
Which begs the question why build an entirely new jet based on stealth when new avionics , software and longer range weapons can do the job more cheaply.
Whilst visiting the Paris airshow in the mid-80's, I spotted what looked to be a plane off in the distance. I couldn't work out whether I was seeing an Ilyushin or just a Mirage!!!
Regarding the U2 interception in France, US were spying France for weeks despite the fact that the U-2 was clearly identified by french radars. US government refused to admit their were spying nuclear facilities. In response, french air force put a support rocket engine to the Mirage III and this one was capable to intercept and overtake the U-2 by surprise. The US pilot was clrealy frightnned because he was thinking to be in total safety at its altitude. The french pilot has taken a shot of the U-2 above french territory like a proof. After that never a U-2 came back

Credit for the Success of the Mirage III has to go to Israel. If not for Israel, the Mirage III might never have had cannons installed, which more than doubled the combat effectiveness of the plane. Most of Israel's air-to-air kills during the 6-Day war were credited using guns instead of more expensive and less reliable missiles, a lesson the USAF and USN would learn the hard way over Vietnam almost a decade later. Israel also studied the Mirage III minutely and isolated its strengths as well as its weaknesses. The Mirage III wasn't a great horizontal turning dogfighter against Arab MIG 17s and 19s, but it was excellent in the vertical which helped to nullify the advantages of the slower but more nimble MIGs. When the dust settled after the 1967 war, the spectacular kill-ratio of the Mirage III in Israeli service brought many customers to Dassault and a lot of prestige to France. That success was further magnified when Israel, making use of all the data they gained through real war experience, ordered a cheaper and less complicated Mirage III that would be called the Mirage 5. It is sad that France, which gained so much from their association with Israel, would end up stabbing their best customer in the back by refusing to deliver the ordered and paid for Mirage Vs for purely political reasons. It was that broken deal that caused the rift with Israel and France and the reason why Israel felt justified in building their own Mirage V, better known as the Nesher.
The alleged embargo made by France against Israel was only a facade. Underhand the French government has continued to support Israel like the coup of the "mysteriously missing" corvettes from the port of Brest... Everyone knew it was completely bogus but appearances were kept.
I say there's only ONE cold war...what we call the current one is yet to be decided. Because cold isn't the right adjective....weird war ? I just don't know all i know is with our leadership we are in trouble since half of them arent even fighting for us
We aren’t in another Cold War and likely never will be at least not in the same way it was with the soviets. And certainly Russia isn’t in a position to threaten the west.
I did three tours on Mirage 111O. Unbreakable, sweet handling and fast. Managed 810 KIAS at 10,000 feet in a two seater. At max TOW loaded big jugs and bombs = nose wheel off at 140kts and rotate at 194 kts. Approach speed 195 kts. Was a high energy fighter = boom and zoom. Loved that baby!
Max, the TSR-2 was a wonder, symbol of British superiority in plane design. It would have become a European standard or inspiration. Not the Mirage. And I’m French but the truth is the truth.

Two squadron of Mirage 111 Sqn 75/ 76 based at Williamtown near Newcastle while we were there in 67/68. They extremely new and I suspect some of them were less than 12 months out of the factory..

They were sold to Pakistan. Total 49 aircraft's and engines and a lot of spare parts, for just 27 million dollars, in 1991 and Pakistan upgraded them with the help of France and Italy putting them for ROSE I.e retrofit of strike element for deep strike penetration role
My great uncle was a test pilot for the mustere etendar and mirage 3 and was also on the team of the testing floggt crnter for the vautour, jaguar and alpha jet program. Its really cool to see this psrt of history remembered from his perspective even if didnt get to meet him. His name is Roland Glavany, you can find his wikipedia page.
Mirage III (BR version)have a great history of reliability and eficiency in Brazil. Loved by pilots, aircrews and enthusiasts here. A true supersonic legend! Our most sincere respect for Dassault and french aviation industry!
A long underrated, and full combat ready aircraft, completely capable of delivering destruction in the able hands of a talented fighter pilot. Thank you.
One day of May 2015 I had the chance to climb in the cockpit of a Mirage IIIC belonging to the "Ailes anciennes de Toulouse" (Old wings of Toulouse). I felt like Captain Tanguy! (french comics)
Yup, I remember that series! I bought them here in the Netherlands. Great series. Does 'their' squadron, Escadre de Chasse "Cicognes" still exist? I understand that 'their' base at Dijon was disbanded some time ago.
THANK YOU! For so long I have been looking for aircraft documentaries on the wonderful French aircraft in English. I am a Swede who speaks English so there are a million English reviews of American and British aircraft that I can watch. The Russians seem to love bragging about their aircraft in English and I obviously speak Swedish. Unfortunately I don't speak French but I love French aircraft (I have tried to learn French but at University I was told that I will never speak French and my professor allowed me to leave the class). Thank you for your documentaries on French aircraft in English, I apologize for my inability to speak French 😉
@@absjones2916 Do not underestimate the work of French pilots during the Battle of France. Take a good look at what happened in aerial combat, you might be surprised! The Lufwafe and presented itself blunt for the Battle of Britain and the outcome of this one could have been very different without this work of attrition upstream. And never forget that it was a white flag that kicked the English ass in Yorktown and gave freedom to the Americans.
certainly iconic A long time ago back about 1976-77 or so my big brother had a huge plastic model of a Mirage III. I can't recall the scale or the maker, but it was maybe 1/24 ? Anyway it was massive and gorgeous after he painted it all silver and used Swiss roundels
Hellenic air force has the Mirage 2000-5 and has just ordered the new Rafale to operate over the Aegean sea. Very effective aircraft as a bomber and does well for dogfights against F-16s of the naughty neighbours of Turkish airforce violating Greek airspace. They're a good aircraft 👍
It was about time the two Countries learned to fight the ruzzians alongside instead of trying to kill each other, but I guess this will never happen... 🙁
The Morane-Saulnier MS 464 which was the main fighter in the french air force was not a match to german Messerchmitt BF 109E on the paper and its poor capacities (speed, engine), french strategy made them mostly azll destroyed on the ground without any fight (air surprised attacks to thrash allied aviations on their bases)... The surprise was done that the few which were safe and able to fight did claim many victories other german planes, surprisingly, especially when you considere that they fought bravely at 1 against 6 mostly and french pilots did more hours of flying and fighting by day than their allied british fighters during the blitz and sealion ! The alone good fighters french had arrived too late and in too little number : Marc Bloch MB 152 and even better the Dewoitine D520. In May 1940, Dewoitine produced an excellent improvement of the D520, the D531 which had the capacities better than Spittfire and Focke Wulf 190 ! But the 3 prototypes which were put on a ship to go hiding in north africa, disapeared in the sea after a submarine (british or german, it's not truly known) sank the ship and most of the plans of this fighter.
MS406 not 464, and the successor from the Dewoitine 520 was the D551 not 531 and the 3 finished D551 was never "send to north Africa", but in 1941, Dewoitine was forced from the germans to destroy it, despite they was first hidden as "sport aircraft" (without armament) , and the Bloch 152's successor was the Bloch 157, one prototype was built and tested from the germans in 1942 and the prototype engine send to germany by BMW. The performance from the MB157 was similar to a Mustang P51D, but in 1940!
It is tough indeed from a distance, depending on the angle, the III has underwing flap caches that helped me distinguish them from front or rear, the side is easy: much more angular tail. (I live in France, we had a lot of very different yet very similar looking Mirages to train on)

Good video, as usual. 👍 But if I may correct a tiny mistake. Min 9:54, "... Colombia, Ecuador, Pakistán and Sri Lanka are the current users of Mirage III and its derivatives..." This video was made two years ago, that means 2021, and Colombia's Mirage 5 were written off in 2010 and replaced by Kfir C10/C12; therefore by 2021 there weren't possibility that Colombian Air Force was a current operator of Mirage 5. I know this by first hand, due that i served 25 years in the Colombian Air Force as an Officer and retired in 2016. Thanks.
Very interesting. Belgium too used the Mirage V, simpel lines, yet beautiful plane. This was in the same period the Belgian Air Force also used the F 104 G. Notice, "Dassault" is pronounced "Dassoooo" rather than "Das-who" as it is done in this upload. I wonder if the Russians also used terms as the "Mirage killer" or "Phantom-butcher" to promote their MiGs and Sukhois in the Third World during the Cold War. Or is that something typically from "the West" Any Russians here who can comment on this ?
The mirage 3 and 5 are legendary aircrafts. Proud to say the Pakistan airforce is using their ROSE variants. The Mirage 3 is now being replaced with modern JF17 and J10C fighters but the Mirage 5 ROSE is gonna keep rolling. Fun fact: PAF used mirage 5 to bomb targets in india during thd 2019 conflict. Where did you get the footage of South African Mirage III and Cheetahs? I would like to see more of them. Also there is a Mirage III CZ know as Black widow and Mirage III BZ known as SkyDancer that was still flying recently but due to lack of funding they are no longer flying as far as I know, but not officially retired yet, also as far as I know. Hopefully they will fly again one day.
These were magnificent aircraft. I remember once in 1985 when I was in my home yard, by the Seaside, in Portugal. Suddenly I heard a tremendous roar and an A-7P from Portuguese Air Force passed overhead, followed three seconds later by a Mirage 5 from Belgium Air Force, then a second and a third!. They were not flying higher than 300 ft AMSL and certainly not less than 450 knots! And seagulls be damned. Those were the days. Nowadays everyone would be promptly grounded. 🙁
A damn good "weapon" reporter!!! One can sense many a years spent on the fields of battle of the 20. and 21. century where he recorded this magnificent footage.

How could you include the F14 in that list? It only served two Nations and didn't have many air-to-air victories. Now the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon on the other hand?
@@downunderrob While often overlooked, F-14s were very important defending Iran during the 80s, despite all the issues they faced. Considering the circumstances, they could be seen as equivalent to F-15s in a very different situation, but i wouldn't consider either to be as important as Mirage, Phantoms and MiG-21s were taking into account how much they were used.
@@downunderrob The F14 was and is the finest BVR interceptor ever devised with the range, speed and agility to be the envy of almost any other fighter during the same time period.
Okay, I have naysayers. The original statement was, "The mirage III, F4 phantom, F 14 and MIG 21 are the most successful fighters of the cold war." As good a BVR Interceptor the F14 was, I maintain the accuracy and truth of my rebuttal. And if you need a second opinion? Ask the Israeli's.
@@downunderrob I actually forgot. I should added those 2 aircraft. The f 15 and f 16 were also highly successful in air to air combat. I should have also mentioned the f 86 and mig 15.
Dude! it was the Indian air force who used mirage 2000 against the terrorists camps in balakot (Pakistan). Mirage 2000 is not in service with Pakistan.
Pakistan has Mirage-IIIs and Mirage-Vs which they bought directly and some 2nd hand from Australia, Spain etc. They have been upgraded quiet a bit too.
@Cholas The Lords of indian ocean do you have any link that shows that Pakistan has mirage 2000's in there inventory because I never heard of mirage 2000 's of Pakistan.
It's curious, here's a video on a piece of aeronautical history designed in the 1950s and there is a lot of French bashing, silly comparisons (A-4 which is a ground attack aircraft, F18 which is put in service 40 years later) etc... Interesting.
Just to comment on the South African deployment and usage of the Mirage III and varients. Firstly, I think it is unfair to only mention the 2 Mirage losses during the conflict, while avoiding all mention of airial victories and performance. Secondly, I major piece of information is never mention when discussing the South African Mirage III. South Africa developed and used the world's first HMS (Helmet Mounted Sights, for off-bore firing) system in the late 1960s against Soviet Pilots. This was nearly a full 20 years, before the Soviet Union developed and deployed their first HMS system. With the Soviet product, being heavily influenced by the South African technology, due to the fact that, the technology was intercepted/aquired in Israeli by Soviet Spies.
The IAF in 67 made Mirage a known name worldwide. And then France put an embargo on Israel and the IAF success continued without Frances's help. It was more the pilot than the plane. The plane was only marginally better than the Mig 21.
I'd always tought that the biggest mistake was buying the F104, an aircraft that had been refused after few yrs by the USAF (!), pratically useless in the role of fighter bomber, as demostrated in Vietnam, originally build as a pure interceptor, then adapted for a type of mission it wasn't built for. Try to remake Mirages' exploits in 6 days war with a F104! P.s.the Lebanon air force had Mirages not the egyptians, at least I read so
the Mirage III (the actual name of the 1) is the first production variant of the Mirage line of Dassault fighters and the Mirage F1 is a non delta winged version of the Mirage with a much stronger engine and better avionics
The list goes that way: -Mirage I (proto), II (proto as well), III (main type, with different versions, from A to ng, plus the foreign ones), IV (nuclear bomber, twin jet, the biggest of the family), V (ground attack variant of the Mirage III), F-1, 2000. There have also been various other prototypes, such as the Mirage, Milan, the G1, G2, and the Mirage 4000.
Yes, the Mirage 5 was designed for the Israëlian airforce, but because a Nato embargo, was not delivered to Israël and was integrated in the french airforce, but because Israël had pay a large part from the Mirage 5, France did transmit trough the secret services, the design documents to avoid Israël to built they own Mirage...this operation was hidden as "documents stolen by the Israëlian secret service", same thing with the patrol boats "stolen" in the military port of Cherbourg...

It's still in Pakistan Air Force inventory ..PAF still using this beautiful aircraft as a aggressor. Used in 27th Feb skirmishes against Indian targets successfully. Still a night mare to enemy.
Do you have any idea how much it cost to maintain a Mirage, for example, every 10 days you had to do a spectrometric analysis of the engine oil, it demanded enormous precision due to the great amount of wear and tear it had to do. You have to be realistic when talking about airplanes
@@venkateshsoundarajan actually it was 54.. it was reported that some Indian fighters shot down their own fighters in friendly fire. . fratricide. Anyway at the end of the day the Pak defense forces lost the war and surrendered in 1971. So all these shootings etc has become a joke. 😆
It’s success against MiGs, mostly achieved by Israel, had more to do with the quality of the opposition and less to do with the aircraft. Tha5 said, the Mirage was better than the F-104.
In our perspective, the world is experiencing a new cold war. For this reason, we think that the usage of terms First Cold War and Second Cold War are more accurate.
@@WeaponDetective I am fascinated. I’m assuming you did not live through the Cold War. Our problem is they are so incompetent that we might face a civil war in China and have to go and secure their WMDs. There is one Chinese soldier for ever 2000 citizens with even Australia having 1:600. The Russians airforce is less than 900 combat aircraft and with acquisitions only 60-80 a year declining. Their navy is a pale shell of its Cold War prowess. To move the modest force to Syria they needed to lease commercial shipping on World market. And said past NATOs well armed southern flank. The Russians recently had their Arminians allies beaten by the poor equipped and trained Azerbaijan armed forces. So this Second Cold War is very strange with no opponents, no arms race, next to no wars. I feel you could use a better term: Post Cold War turmoil might be better
