Mirage III S fighter-aircraft launch with JATO rocket engine in Switzerland 🚀 (1968)

For take-off on short or improvised runways, rockets are mounted on fighter aircraft, which provide additional thrust and thus shorten the take-off. These missiles are called JATO, an abbreviation for “Jet Assisted Take Off”.
The film shows the attachment of the JATO missiles to the belly of a Mirage, how the missile containers, rockets, fuses and electronics are assembled and tested.
Different recordings of launches show how the performance of the JATO rockets affects flight behavior.

Those bottles are still just amazing and the mirage must have been mind blowing in 1961. The streets would still have been full of cars and trucks from the 30s onwards yet those insanely fast devices were flying overhead.

I had the good fortune to be in Switzerland during the mid-90s and have the living daylights scared out of me by a Mirage belting overhead down the valley. The locals were so blasé about it 😂
@feynthefallen
@feynthefallen 10 месяцев назад
Yes, the locals tend to be like that. A colleague of mine once brought his assault rifle to the office because he had to turn it in in the afternoon. Not strictly legal - technically he can only transport it from home to range or military base uninterrupted - but tolerated, and everybody was very, as you call it, blasé about it. I also lived close to an army firing range, and our office overlooked it. The 35mm vehicle guns were impressive, but not as impressive as the AT rockets. I can't count any more how often I heard the old joke "war's hell, but the sound is amazing". As a matter of fact, the only time I ever witnessed someone NOT be cool about something like that, was my radical left-wing boss. He pretty near called the police on some guy carrying an assault rifle along the road. Which would have been a bone-headed move, because that guy was almost certainly within his legal rights.

I grew up in the 80s in Zurich Schwamendingen. Starting Mirages from Dübendorf military Airfield were just normal. We kids knew without looking to the Sky if it was a Hunter orva Mirage just by the Sound (Mirages had this skreeching, screaming sound you also hear in the video). At school we couldn't understand our teachers anymore because of the noise when they were starting, one after another... Nice thing was, military Jets basically only flew during the day. But because of the Dübendorf airfield, Civil Jets almost never flew over Schwamendingen. This changed, when Dübendorf closed 😢

They are most often jettisoned, the extra weight and drag is not optimal for flying.
@DoctorShocktor
@DoctorShocktor 10 месяцев назад
@@MattesSPunktWrong. Nothing to do with war time or peace time. JATO bottles were most often JETTISONED, as they cause extra weight and drag. Around airfields, one would find used JATO bottles being used for ashtrays, chair legs, and all kinds of crafty repurposing, or just littering the ground for awhile until cleaned up.

@DoctorShocktor 10 месяцев назад
No. JATO as in jet assisted takeoff is referring to the historical usage of rockets being “jet propelled” or propelled by a “jet” of force. This term was used often in the early days of rocketry and is why the famous institution is called the JPL (JET PROPULSION LABORATORY). As well, the manufacturers of these rocket units LITERALLY LABEL them JATO units on the rockets and in their manuals. It does NOT refer to turbine “JET” engines. Some users such as the UK may have used the term RATO for their rocket bottles, but JATO was the more common term in the US and always refers to rocket bottles, there are no “JATO” engines that use jet turbines.

The Mirage III and MiG-21 were both designed and built almost along the same time lines. Given the engine technology of the time and the intended uses of these planes as interceptors, it's no real surprise both have very similar size and performance. The largest single difference of the two planes - the Mirage had 2x30mm cannon with 250 rounds. The MiG -21 had 1x30mm cannon with 30 rounds. Please have a look into the book: "MIRAGE III VS.
